Raiders add cornerback Sean Smith

Sean Smith AP

The best available player in our Free Agent Hot 100 has been snapped up.

Former Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith has agreed to a deal with the Raiders.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that it’s a four-year deal worth $40 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

Heading into free agency, Smith was our No. 14 player available. The 13 ahead of him have all either signed a contract or been franchised.

A 2009 second-round pick of the Dolphins, Smith played four seasons in Miami before signing a three-year, $18 million deal with the Chiefs in free agency. Now Smith is on his third team, and his third contract.

Can you smell what the Raiders are cooking,?? Good off season so far, and the donkies don’t have a QB

If I was him I’d rather face Alex Smith twice a year than Derek Carr too. Smart guy!

    Welcome to Oakland.

  4. mball13 says: Mar 10, 2016 7:58 AM

Wow! This just made my morning. Osemele, Irvin and Smith are three solid additions and fill immediate needs. Raider Nation!!!!

  5. kneedragr says: Mar 10, 2016 7:59 AM

Never heard of this guy. Not saying he isnt good, sounds like he is the way he is getting paid – just isnt in the news much.

  6. kcraiderfan says: Mar 10, 2016 8:09 AM

The free agency period has been fun this year. I like that we are adding so many guys on the right side of 30.

This last season in Oakland will be epic . Now lets get Eric Weddle ! Go Raiders !!

Woooooo yea baby! Thank you to the raiders organization and thank you Reggie for making these great signings! Kelechi osemele, Bruce Irvin and Sean Smith! I can’t believe we hit 3 home runs in free agency things have changed big time for the raiders! Im just so happy right now! Damn I’m pumped up! Now that we signed sean smith I can finally get some sleep been waiting for this news all night! Woooooooo! JUST WIN BABY!

QBs around the league aren’t going to be happy facing Oakland

  11. bassplucker says: Mar 10, 2016 8:19 AM

He’s a good to very good CB but that’s a position that has come to be very overpaid in FA especially considering not all CBs fit all schemes. My own team has needs there too but at that price I’d rather we take a guy 2nd round that Fangio and Donatell can coach up.

  12. firedup1 says: Mar 10, 2016 8:20 AM

Good signing for them. KC may be going corner with their first pick now.

  13. araidersfan says: Mar 10, 2016 8:22 AM

I’m sure that a certain Raider-detractor will claim that the team “overpaid” for Smith. But that claim was made about Rodney Hudson (also poached from the Chiefs) last year and when he was healthy, Hudson justified his salary through his performance. I hope the same applies with Sean Smith.

I think that the Smith signing was the most important of the 3 so far because the defense secondary is in glaring need of an overhaul (something which Del Rio acknowledges).

  14. thenewyorker718 says: Mar 10, 2016 8:23 AM

Oakland making power moves . That defense will be fierce .

  15. joetoronto says: Mar 10, 2016 8:28 AM

The Raiders are now a contender with lot’s of money available and the draft.

  16. financialmusingsblog says: Mar 10, 2016 8:29 AM

Reggie making so much contact with FA this year and not whiffing like previous years. Why? Because the team will be better. Signing guys to good contracts and quality players. Defense will be so much better this year. Aldon Smith will be back in second half of season and this will make defense even better. Need Mario Edwards Jr. to come back from neck injury- might be serious though. Now, we need Weddle and a running back and perhaps Penn back on oline.

  17. oakland2421 says: Mar 10, 2016 8:31 AM

Great grab! All this and still more than half the cap space left. A couple more mid-tier pieces plus get Penn done and it’s truly BPA in the draft.

  18. dallasdom says: Mar 10, 2016 8:33 AM

Love this time of the year. Big gain for the Raiders, love seeing bad teams make that turn around.

  22. u4iadman says: Mar 10, 2016 8:41 AM

  23. codythao35 says: Mar 10, 2016 8:43 AM

If course teams that spent more money in FA will win Super Bowl. Just look at Redskins and Dolphins for example. Raiders is where good players go to die.

  24. ctchiefsfan25 says: Mar 10, 2016 8:45 AM

SOLID CB. Will be missed. GO CHIEFS!!!

  25. jjackwagon says: Mar 10, 2016 8:50 AM

He’s above average but not great. Good pickup but overpriced. However the Raiders have the money to spend so overspending on Smith won’t hurt them. They are making good moves in Free Agency.
The comment about facing Alex Smith vs Carr twice a year is right on track. All he has to do against Alex is play over the top. Alex over throws everything past 15 yds.

  26. jbaxt says: Mar 10, 2016 8:58 AM

They do have the Lombardi trophy though, which is pretty good “consolation”. Another thing they don’t have: a non-winning streak almost a generation long. Commitment to excrement. Just lose baby.

“If course”? They’re filling out the roster with proven players compared to maybe great draft picks because they have the money to do so, there is a minimum teams must spend each year. You sound jealous and butt hurt, must be a fan of a losing team.

  31. steveoluvraiders says: Mar 10, 2016 9:07 AM

Know the Raiders can add another Safety like Weddle or Reggie Nelson. Then in the draft I want us to draft Ragland our defense needs to be top 15 and we make the playoffs.

  32. razzlejag says: Mar 10, 2016 9:11 AM

Darn…wanted this guy in Jacksonville but I’m happy for the Raider fans as it looks like both our teams are on the right track.

Good point about the pressure being on Del Rio to succeed. Hollywood Jack has some horses now.

  33. sdcarpetbagger says: Mar 10, 2016 9:12 AM

Winning the off-season is not like winning in the season. As well, they have no idea how acquisitions change team chemistry.

    Time will tell

  36. r502 says: Mar 10, 2016 9:20 AM

Solid pick ups by Oakland filling areas that needed to be specifically addressed. Compared to the other figures I am seeing put out there for other free agents, Oakland’s offers seem downright sane. They typically front load these deals, if they don’t pan out the player got his up front and the team can move on without pushing cap hits out for years. Good young core on this club, good financial situation now and going forward. This club looked like it was turning a corner last year, time to take the next step and start winning on the field.

  37. bigmark67 says: Mar 10, 2016 9:22 AM

Raiders domination of AFC West for the next 10 years is about to begin. Denver, No QB and other players leaving, SD is never very good and KC has Alex Smith and a coach that is good enough for playoffs but nothing else. Raiders are young and talented. They have the best QB and defensive player in the division and they are only going to get better.

  39. kcflake says: Mar 10, 2016 9:35 AM

Sean Smith is a “Good” Player. Not a lock down corner. He is a knucklehead too. I am glad my Chiefs did not pay him that much $$$ to stay. Not worth that much dough. Shows a Player will chase the dollar no matter what team calls. We will enjoy smoking Sean Smith twice a year. Go Chiefs.

  41. r8rsfan says: Mar 10, 2016 9:54 AM

You should stick to smoking your barbecue in the parking lot (which is amazing I’m sure). The only smoke you’re gonna see on the field is Alex Smith being torched by Mack and Ervin.

  42. gibbyfan says: Mar 10, 2016 10:01 AM

As a long time Raider fan I’m happy that finally they are improving but I wouldn’t get too excited. I think they will finally break the 500 mark for the first time in 13 years –but still have a way to go before any kind of domination.
They got a good corner, great guard, and a linebacker who is very possibly just good–not great. They might lose a LT I see 9-7 and possible playoff contention.

  43. hopethechiefsalwayslose says: Mar 10, 2016 10:07 AM

After Rolondo McClain, I have a bitter taste about Alabama MLB….after all Rolondo was the best player Nick Saban ever coached….I would draft Jaylon Smith, and let him rehab for a year before I took him….still think Elliot if still on the board might have his name called at 14…..Ohio State pro day is tomorrow , and that might have 7 first rd picks.

as far as Sean Smith, way to Go Reggie!

  57. slick50ks says: Mar 10, 2016 11:13 AM

As usual, the fade had to overpay for a decent player. He’s not a #1. We already have our #1 in Marcus Peters. SS plays when he wants to. He belongs in chokeland, where he can take plays off and still get paid.

  58. Silver and Black attack says: Mar 10, 2016 11:20 AM

Travis Benjamin should be in jail for stealing #1 WR money from the dumb Chargers when he’s a #3 WR at best and returns kicks…Stupid move by the Chargers.

  59. norcal031 says: Mar 10, 2016 11:44 AM

I like it as the secondary was not too bad as a group. The big chunk plays were fefinately down this year. Raider fans making us look bad with all of the talk of 10 year runs in here……..just adds another guy. Not too expensive in terms of only 20 million so they did not over pay. I like Amerson too.

NFL network is running redzone from every week starting this Sunday. I am very excited. Sunday sucks without football.

  60. jmoney74 says: Mar 10, 2016 11:56 AM

We are filling in positions of need. Front loading contracts so we can pay our young guys later.. and hopefully draft replacements for these FAs that we pick up now. It’s good work by our new regime.. Kudos to him for staying patient while most of RaiderNation was screaming for the last few years.

  61. ninerdynasty says: Mar 10, 2016 12:34 PM

As u can tell im a Niners fan and I do like the Raiders just fine.. I’m a Bay area fan all the way. But to me 10 mil/ year for a corner that already hit his prime and heading down the low end of his career sounds a bit too much IMO.. just my opinion and I’m no GM to know better.

10 int’s in 7 years.. thats roughly 1.3 int’s per year. that does not screm 10 / mil year to me

  62. redlava316 says: Mar 10, 2016 1:38 PM

  67. youaresimple says: Mar 10, 2016 2:47 PM

People are trying to focus on the INTs…check out passes defended and then say something. Smith himself has said he would rather bat down a ball then try to pick it with the chance of it getting through. This guy is a baller.

Also, how is he on the decline??? He’s on the right side of 30 and has played very well. Usually after a rookies 5 year contract is up they are around 26, right? This guy is 28…ok 29 when the season starts. Seems like a good deal to me. Front loaded contract so there is plenty of room after the first 2 years.

Seems like some people on here are straight salty, hahaha.

  68. mt10425 says: Mar 10, 2016 2:57 PM

  71. chebornek says: Mar 10, 2016 6:37 PM

This guy constantly lets QBs throw over his head. He never, to my memory watching him play every game he’s started for KC… looked back over his shoulder for a pass thrown to the man he’s guarding.

I frankly don’t see how anyone could rank him highly. His lackadaisical, or lethargic or just plain lousy play has over the course of many games for the Chiefs…helped to allow teams to sneak back into games or actually rally to beat KC.

He’ll bite on pump fakes, get smoked by good receiver fakes and he has zero recovery/closing quickness. Not to mention, he was the fifth fastest cornerback for the Chiefs last year.

I’m happy that Maclin and Smith will have many opportunities each year going forward to pick on and burn him.

No loss for Kansas City with his swapping AFC West teams.

Peters is overrated. When you give up as many yards and TDs as he did last season, getting 8 picks isn’t that impressive. Smith isn’t great, but he is a starting caliber back, and outside of Amerson, Oakland doesn’t have much in the secondary.
