Report: Colin Kaepernick is Broncos’ “chief target”

Kaepernick Getty Images

Even before Brock Osweiler was officially out of Denver, a deal for 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick seemed to be among the most sensible alternatives.

Now, it might be their primary one.

According to Michael Silver of the NFL Network, Kaepernick has emerged as the Broncos’ “chief target” and an attempt to trade for him seems likely.

On the surface, it makes plenty of sense for the Broncos, unless they’re going to make a run at Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Kaepernick is young and mobile and seemingly a stylistic fit for Gary Kubiak’s offense. And there’s enough help around him that should ease the pressure to carry things like in San Francisco after the post-Harbaugh diaspora.

He’s also relatively cheap, if you consider the $11.9 million which would be guaranteed on April 1.

With so many of their own players bolting for the door early in free agency, an inexpensive starting quarterback could be just what they’re looking for as they attempt to reload.

Then again, the 49ers have to go along with the idea of trading him, and have thus far seemed unwilling to, despite his agents spreading the word he wanted out. That gives them the chance to twist John Elway’s arm a bit, and see what Kaepernick’s worth to them.

  2. patsfan4lifesbchamps says: Mar 10, 2016 10:59 AM

He couldn’t win a SB with a loaded San Francisco team, good luck Broncos.

    Can’t read defenses.
    Forces the ball into coverage.
    Takes too many sacks.

    What’s not to like?

I really don’t understand this at all. Since when is Kaepernick a west coast offense QB?

The ability to make extremely quick decisions and hitting specific parts of the field with precise timing – that is what you NEED. You WANT athleticism as well . . .

This would be no different than shoehorning RGIII into Shanahan’s offense.

  7. ravenrich says: Mar 10, 2016 11:02 AM

John Elway, the most overrated ignoramous in the NFL. They put themselves in this situation because he isn’t so smart. IF they land Kap, which is both doubtful and a bad choice (because he is lousy), they are going to get fleeced in that trade. Go from the epic preparedness and accuracy of Manning to the absolute opposite with Kap? Really? They will finish in 3rd place or worse, for certain.

  12. ninerdynasty says: Mar 10, 2016 11:07 AM

I heard the niners are asking for a 2nd round… good luck with that.. but if they pull it off.. holy damn!

I honestly would be happy with a 3rd and 6th for kaep. pickup a QB with the first pick and use that 3rd and 6th and throw in one of the many 5ths rounder’s they have to move up from the 2nd round to the first and get some help on Defense like and edge rusher or OL

Awwww… Poor Colin had too much pressure to carry things in SF. Poor wittle baby. Good luck with this guy Denver.

  17. blacknole08 says: Mar 10, 2016 11:10 AM

You know what…. a change of scenario might be good for Kaep. A trade is essentially a one year contract. It has worked for guys like Favre and Steve Young (NOT SAYING HE IS THOSE GUYS), hell even Alex Smith. He does have SB experience, amd more experience than Osweiler. It has yet to be determined how good Osweiler could really be. AND he is cheaper. If it happens, lets see what he can do with the Broncos.

  18. broncospianoman says: Mar 10, 2016 11:13 AM

Why have people soured on Kaepernick so much? He stepped in halfway through a season and took the Niners to a Super Bowl. Sure they lost to the Ravens (who won in Denver and in New England that year in the playoffs), but they were one Richard Sherman deflection away from going back to the Super Bowl the next year. It wasn’t until Harbaugh left that the wheels came off on the entire team. I think RG3 would be an okay fit, but teammates dislike him. Kap is the guy to get in Denver and would thrive in a bootleg offense like Kubiak’s.

  19. jag1959 says: Mar 10, 2016 11:13 AM

They won a SB without getting much from the QB position and if they really are targeting Kaepernick then apparently they want to try doing that again

    ———————————————-

He has the same physical abilities (if not better) than Osweiler, and unlike Brock Kaepernick is a proven QB in the NFL (He reached one SB and was a completion away of winning and next year he reached a NFCCG and also was one completion away of getting to the SB). A change of team will be good for him, and with a solid D behind him, I am sure he could give a surprise.

  26. zinnsand21 says: Mar 10, 2016 11:18 AM

What else out there has won a league championship game and come a red zone pass short of winning the Super Bowl? He’s worth a #2 and a 2017 #4, IMO.. And he’s willing to restructure his contract? This is a no brainer for Denver..

  27. 6250claimer says: Mar 10, 2016 11:19 AM

Denver needs a game manager-type QB, not a mad slinger/runner. With that defense, just don’t lose the game, move the chains a bit, and you’ll be fine. Fitzpatrick would be a MUCH better fit. Elway needs to roll the tape on Kap’s game against Arizona early last season – it was singularly the worst exhibition of NFL QB play I’ve seen in 50+ years watching the league.

  28. klutch14u says: Mar 10, 2016 11:19 AM

  33. themattstapiece says: Mar 10, 2016 11:22 AM

They should go after Fitzpatrick. He excels at ‘not blowing it’ and that is all they need at that position. Kaep is an inferior player who will take more sacks and give up more turnovers, his ‘upside’ is not what Denver needs.

  34. mrclaytonbigsby says: Mar 10, 2016 11:24 AM

Elway will give the Niners max a 5th round pick to take the 11.9 million that would be sitting on their bench.

Elway has really screwed up free agency this year and now appears to be desperate. They can’t retain their own guys and now he wants to give up the future by trading for Colin Kaepernick.

Good thing they just won the Super Bowl because they are heading to the basement right now.

Lulz at the armchair GMs on all these Broncos articles.

‘Ehmagerd four players I hadn’t heard of two months ago left the Super Bowl champions. Elway’s an idiot and they’re doomed!’

Keep the core strong and let other teams overpay for system players. Quite possible Denver will underpay for another system player in Kaepernick.

  41. burningrangers says: Mar 10, 2016 11:29 AM

Denver would be better off drafting a QB. Kapernick should be a backup at best.

  42. publikwerks says: Mar 10, 2016 11:29 AM

Oh yeah, Kaepernick is proven….. proven mediocre. Don’t get me wrong – the Broncos might have a better grasp on what Brock’s worth as they have been working with him. But I think they hurt his pride benching him for Manning, so I don’t know if it’s just about money.

But if Kaepernick is your answer, LOLOLOLOLOL

  47. ninerdynasty says: Mar 10, 2016 11:36 AM

I dont know why ppl are bashing kap.. but I would honestly take Kaep over Osweiler! Osweiler has played in less than half a season.. his TD-Int wasnt all that great.. and if it wasnt for the D he doesnt win half the games.

Kaep has proven that he can take a team to the SB.. he himself came back to beat ATL in that championship game.. if Alex smith or hell, Osweiler was there QB of that team; no way the niners make the SB.. I believe that if Kaep had been the QB when the niners lost to the Giants, niners wouldve won that game.. Alex smith did absolutely nothing to get that offense moving in the 2nd half.

  48. rykield509 says: Mar 10, 2016 11:38 AM

As a Broncos fan, Elway has earned the benefit of the doubt. Osweiler filled in well for Manning for 7 games but didn’t set the world on fire or even perform well enough to keep Manning on the bench for the playoffs.

Elway has been fantastic in his 5 years as the GM. The Broncos have won 5 straight division titles, went to 2 super bowls, winning the last one, built the greatest statistical offense in NFL history and then two years later flipped the script and built one of the best defenses in NFL history.

Elway has been brilliant. He’s drafted well, lured quality, high performing FAs and handled the cap well.

I feel the Broncos will be just fine and if they land Kaepernick and draft a QB, I think they’ll be back in the playoffs again next year.

    * Hearing for months/years about John Elway’s “genius” (being in the right place at the right time and getting Peyton Manning made him a “genius”)

    * Watching his players leave for money

    * Watching him screw up the QB position so bad that he has to consider Kaepernick

    * Reading these posts comparing Ost to Kaep – both of whom have proven they aren’t ready for prime time (yet)

Thank you Genius for making this off season so interesting!

  55. californiaqid says: Mar 10, 2016 11:59 AM

Umm, I am starting to doubt John Elway as GM: So you want to save $2M and let Brock Osweiler go. And now you want to bring in a cheap headcase in Kaepernick. Dear John, this is unlikely to work out well. The Broncos just won the Super Bowl, you have the momentum, stop being a cheapskate. The franchise is worth far more than whatever sharpshooting you think you can do in the QB free agency market (see Chip Kelly).

    0 0
    —————————————————————-

I’ll answer that for you. Peyton Manning lost his ability to throw with the limited velocity he once had and didn’t have the strength to make some of the timing throws he used to make.

But Peyton Manning can get past his first read. doesn’t throw ridiculously stupid passes at the WRONG time, and can lead an offense.

    Kaep can’t.

  58. jmc8888 says: Mar 10, 2016 12:03 PM

Kaep was worse then Manning this year. Manning was bad because his body was betraying him due to age. Kaepernick is bad because his mind betrays him.

The people that say…Kaep could win with that defense.

Well… first off… the Broncos don’t have that defense anymore. They just lost two high quality starters in the front seven. Demarcus ware also might not be back, and if he is, he’s another year older. There is also the injury factor. Some of the others could get injured.

The sad thing is there are a ton of morons who have garnered the HUBRIS to think they can change Kaepernick…. because he once was an unknown, who had a scheme who limited him, and had a great team around him… but still didn’t win a Superbowl. That must mean you guys would of been thrilled to have Trent Dilfer because he actually won one.

If the Broncos get Kaepernick, they will rue the day… and any fan foolish enough to back it and think it was a good idea.

Kaep simply doesn’t have an NFL QB capable mind. He can read one route, and if it’s wide open he can hit it. If that doesn’t work, and he doesn’t have an open running lane, it circus time.

Oh sure a blind squirrel will get a nut every once in a while and he’ll find a 2nd or 3rd receiver. But consistently? No.

If you want to bring him in for some sort of gadget package… that’s one thing. But to start… rofl. Don’t trust your eyes, instead please blind yourself out of loyalty…. that’ll work out GREAT!

Exactly. They should easily try for Fitzpatrick. By far the best available option. If he was the QB in SB 50, they wouldn’t of won with the poorest winning QB output ever.

  60. realfootballfan says: Mar 10, 2016 12:08 PM

He fits the stretch and run offense to a tee. And please leave the “he can’t read defenses” talking point somewhere else. Like all former spread QBs, like Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, Cam Newton, etc., etc., he is a tick slower at doing it than a QB bred right out of a pro offense all his life, but he can read defenses fine. That’s why those QBs get hit more, but also why you’d like a big, strong guy to be able to do it like all of the above mentioned and Kapernick are. I’ve heard him break down where to go with the ball after a play that sounded like Chinese to me and I’m thinking would have to any of you morons who throw around he can’t read them too. His flaw is he’s not the most accurate QB in the world, but he does perform when the chips are down, or maybe you think anybody can get to the Super Bowl and nearly win it. Oh yeah right, they did just win one with statistically the worst starting QB in football, so never mind, lol. Anyone who doesn’t think he’d be an upgrade over Osweiler is a moron.

  61. dcapettini says: Mar 10, 2016 12:15 PM

These posters think that the only decent QBs have the last name Manning (except Eli), Brady, Roethlisberger, Rodgers and of course, Flacco. Trent Dilfer won a SB with a great defense, good running game, and a hot streak at the right time. Dan Marino’s only ring came as a backup.

I don’t even like the guy but the amount of stupidity in talking about a GM that’s positioned his team into 2 superbowls in 3 years needs to be given credit.

  68. xilikemenx says: Mar 10, 2016 12:32 PM

    Hey Elway Haters:

He has a Stanford economics degree, a 16-season Hall of Fame career, his years in private business as a successful automobile dealer (sold multiple dealerships for $80 plus Million) and restaurateur, six years as co-owner and CEO of an Arena Football League team and five seasons as the boss of the Broncos’ football operations. Under Elway, the Broncos own a 55-22 record and five consecutive AFC West titles (including the Tim Tebowmania season). They’ve won six of 10 postseason games and two AFC Conference championships, and Super Bowl 50. The Patriots and the Packers have better regular-season records during that five-year span, but only the Broncos, the Patriots and the Seahawks have been in two Super Bowls. All three were 1-1.

Under Elway, twenty-one of the Broncos’ 22 starters in the Super Bowl were acquired as draft choices, veteran free agents or undrafted college free agents. Demaryius Thomas was the only holdover (first-round pick in 2011) from the previous regime. Sixteen of the Broncos who played had been drafted by the Broncos. Five other draft picks on the roster were declared inactive for the game. Three others were on the injured reserve list.
Seven players in the Super Bowl signed with the Broncos as college free agents during the Elway reign. Five unrestricted free agents who joined the Broncos in the past two years started the Super Bowl, and three more starters — Manning, DeMarcus Ware and Ryan Harris — had been released by their previous teams.

In the last 5 years, no NFL GM has done a better job. You may go now!

  69. akaodoyle says: Mar 10, 2016 12:33 PM

This would be an awesome move. Kaepernick has proven that he prepares hard, doesn’t have any ego, and can recognize the correct read pre-snap. Sounds like a win win proposition for the Broncos. I would go as high as your next three first rounders to pick up such a gem of a QB. He has been to a Super Bowl!

Kap can wear number 10 – just like his College days.

Elway still has the option to ” borrow ” some HGH from a former player (oops, players wife) & suit up himself.
    Hysterical Denver has no QB!

A bunch of experts out there ready to write denver off. I haven’t laughed so hard in awhile. The defense will still be really good. Whoever plays qb still has weapons and will have a better line this coming year. Manning couldn’t boot leg or throw the ball 25 yards down field and we still won the super bowl. Ass clowns.

If the QB doesn’t matter, why don’t they just bring back Tebow? He’s an upgrade from Manning, they can probably get him for next to nothing, and he did win a playoff game with the Donkeys.

You know that will be a guy that wants to play there.

Please sign him….Mack and Irvin would love to beat him up twice a year

Broncos defense will likely not be the same next year. They have already lost two strong players, Jackson and Trevethan. Trevethan is not a big loss but Jackson is. They may also lose Ware. Broncos need to rebuild offensive line. Broncos will need a productive QB next year to be competitive.

Kaepernick is a big risk. He has major turnover problems. Maybe it is Tebow time.

Was gonna get a good Quarterback but then I got high.

CHIEF target? How racist! Someone needs to go to forced sensitivity training!

  85. seahawkfanfrom1970s says: Mar 10, 2016 3:36 PM

Hey, lighten up. Kaepernick isn’t so bad a quarterback. It’s just that he’s awful against _us_.

  86. gooseusaf1 says: Mar 10, 2016 3:37 PM

They already had Tebow. Why go Tebow 2.0?

  87. coloradotennisfan says: Mar 10, 2016 6:28 PM

The Broncos lost CJ Anderson today. They may lose Ronnie Hillman also. The Broncos are headed for the bottom of the AFC West next year. Their offense will be even worse next year and their defense cannot top last year’s performance. They should have found a way to keep Osweiller.

Do the people on here spouting off about how Denver’s Defense has lost Malik Jackson and Danny T have a clue as to what round draft choices they were? This whole thread is funny; Pats fans commenting about who Denver should pursue as QB and how Super Bowl winning GM is screwing things up. Remember two words haters; World Champs!

SF offensive line was and is terrible. Kap has lungs and legs like a thoroughbred and can throw deep – Elway – Harbaugh and educated pros see his athletic talent. In Denver he will discover a winning team with excellent athletes – SF keeps losers and deals away the winners because their fans are as stupid as the owner. The fans pay a lot to go on the road drive away from San Francisco for a home game played in a Suburb with the cheapest players the owner could buy. I was a Niner fan and season ticket holder when smart owner Eddie built a great team with smart coach Bill – Going to SF and the stick was always a fun day and watching them build a great program was a joy – win or lose SF weather, restaurants, beauty and attractions do not exist at Levi Stadium in the pit of the bay – Players, coaches, Kap, and even I know this… so do many other fans. I love going to SF and spending a day there for sports… but am tired of being duped by a stupid football program and stupid fans. SF needs people who don’t care about being disappointed, those people are the only ones who can fill that stadium.

PS – Denver is beautiful – LA is exciting – Kap will do just fine for either team. After he is traded he will beat SF for many years to come. Owners blew it – Fans blew it – Let Kap go and show football fans how payback can be fun.
