Bills won’t match Patriots offer to wide receiver Chris Hogan

ORCHARD PARK, NY - NOVEMBER 09: Chris Hogan #15 of the Buffalo Bills reacts after missing a catch in the endzone during the second half against the Kansas City Chiefs at Ralph Wilson Stadium on November 9, 2014 in Orchard Park, New York. (Photo by Tom Szczerbowski/Getty Images) Getty Images

The Bills had five days to decide whether to match New England’s offer sheet on wide receiver Chris Hogan.

They barely needed five minutes.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Bills won’t be using their right of first refusal, meaning the Patriots have themselves a new wide receiver.

Actually, Hogan is more than just a wide receiver. He’s a former lacrosse playing, New Jersey-living, left-footed punting bundle of grit, who seemed destined to play for the Patriots the moment the Dolphins cut him in 2012.

He will almost certainly go on to many Pro Bowls.

The Patriots gave him a three-year, $12 million contract which was heavily front-loaded, taking advantage of the Bills’ tight salary cap situation.

Honest question: From the perspective of non-Pats fans, when the Patriots sign someone like this(non-superstar), do you think to yourslef, “damn, what did we miss?” LOL

Because we all know he will become a household name now.

Perfect fit for their system, but what does he bring that Amendola and Edelman don’t already provide? They need speed and height. He is a great player but doesn’t open new possibilities in the passing game.

Can’t tell if that’s sarcasm…. Either way, don’t get me wrong, Hogan was a nice guy but when Watkins and Harvin were injured last year he had his chance to step up. Didn’t happen.

Granted, Brady can probably make him look better than any QB the Bills have had as of late but still, an average of 4 mil a year seems like a lot for a 3rd/4th string receiver. Especially if it’s front loaded.

Remember Scott Chandler? Yeah. Pretty sure the Patriots are just going to grab at least one Bill per year, promise him that he’s finally going to the superbowl (cuz Brady) so they can pick his brain for information and then toss him away like a used condom. Who’s it going to be next year?

This was done entirely to pick the brain for the offensive playbook because that’s what BB does. Not criticizing, just stating fact. This guy is a younger and cheaper Amendola….. And that’s not really a compliment as Amendola is a guy and not much more.

But as Pats fans will have, everything they do is golden and everything Buffalo does is a failure beyond epic proportions…..

  32. patsfan4lifesbchamps says: Mar 11, 2016 3:58 PM

Good luck in New England Hogan! As a Bills fan, I appreciate all the hard work you put in. I Wish you lots of success, just not against my Bills!

I think he will be a perfect fit in NE’s offense. Very reliable, precise route runner and tireless worker. Yeah, he dropped a few passes last season, but he was also playing injured. He had something wrong with his right hand/wrist (tendon/ligament damage or something like that).

There was just no way Buffalo could pay him that much to be our #3/#4 wide receiver. We have too many other holes to fill.
Plus, now Sammy, Clay, Woods will get more touches, so that’s good. And we can use the cap space, even though it’s only $1.67M…

All of the NFL corners are trembling with fear. LOL. I don’t know how the Patriots continue to get away with talent like this. But they always somehow find a way. I am not thrilled about this pickup. In fact it is downright disappointing a boring based on their total lack of speed. But this will likely work for them too because of the system in place. But man-o-war! I can’t help thinking; this is going to catch up with Belichick sooner than later. And it’s not gonna be pretty. Like those last 4 games of the 2015 season. Yeah, for another year or two probably. Brady has been money for the last 15 years, no doubt. Pats fans who seriously think Brady is going to play for another ten years or whatever are delusional though.

Look at the difference between 2014 Manning and 2015 Manning. Trust me, the sun is setting in New England. Will be interesting to see who takes over the division next. Could be any of them honestly. Bills, Jets, and Dolphins aren’t as bad as they get credit for. Brady has just been nasty for the last 15 years so everyone else in the division basically starts the season 0-2 with little hope of a playoff spot.

Personally, I like him but he is not fast by NFL WR standards. He can do well in the Patriots system, but I am guessing he is there for Edelmen extortion. Yes, the Welker treatment. He is an over-achieving scrub and that is a compliment. Welker was a Star in Miami. Big difference.

Hogan is a nice pick up for NE. Don’t loan any money to Amendola, Hogan is a more durable model of Wes Welker. He will fit in well to a passing game with Gronk and Edelmann. Runs a great timing route.

But as Pats fans will have, everything they do is golden and everything Buffalo does is a failure beyond epic proportions….

    This part you got right.

Patriot fans talk about how terrible a player is until the patriots sign him then they talk about how great he is.
    ———————-

Every fan of every team does that.

  72. fireeyes111 says: Mar 11, 2016 8:30 PM

I know it’s something of an inconvenient truth around here, especially with Pats fans, but at some point y’all need to wake up and realize Bill Belichick SUCKS at signing free agent WRs. Welker and Moss were almost a decade ago, can’t just keep riding on that.

Free agent WRs the Patriots have added, 2008-present:

    Sam Aiken – bust
    Joey Galloway – bust
    David Patten – bust
    Torry Holt – bust
    Chad Johnson/Ochocinco – bust
Brandon Lloyd – mediocre at best
Danny Amendola – mediocre at best
    Donald Jones – bust
    Michael Jenkins – bust
    Austin Collie – bust
Brandon Lafell – mediocre at best

So can we all please, PLEASE dispense with this ridiculous notion that because the Patriots signed a WR as a free agent, Brady is bound to make them great? Because, frankly, the only WR the Pats have added in the past 9 years who has been better than mediocre in Edelman, and they have far more guys who have been terrible than have been good.

Dude Tyrod Taylor went to the Pro Bowl last year

But now did Tyrod really deserve to be in the Pro Bowl? I am asking as a Bills fan…I think that event is a joke.

Being in the pro bowl just means you’re among the ~10 best QBs from that season. It’s not really a huge honor but it’s seriously far from the “RG3 isn’t that desperate to sign with you” zone.

Taylor was 7th in rating, QBR, yards per attempt. That’s always going to get you to the Pro Bowl as the first alternate

He sucked. “Taking advantage of bills cap situation?”

I don’t think they wanted him anyway. they can’t possibly have worse injury luck than they had last season. He should never see the field.

Hogan leads the Bills with 6 catches for 95 yards against the Patriots

This could be Wes Welker all over again

  78. catquick says: Mar 12, 2016 12:30 AM

Hogan runs a 4.4 forty? On a 30 yd track maybe. That’s a typo. He gets hurt, runs patterns way too short(3rd and 15, he runs a 13 yder). Bills fans said he was 7/11 when he got here, not since. He was our 5th receiver. You gave him $4 million? Whaley is a talent hoarder. He would never let him slip away if he had any real talent to add to the team. You’ll find out when he starts dropping easy balls and Brady is screaming on the sidelines, if he makes the team. Concussion prone too.

Going to be great when the cheaters Shady and BB are gone…….you will have nothing to run your yapper about, you will go back to the way it use to be when the Bills killed you every year.’

Wow…..did those black and white super 8mm tapes survive from those games? Maybe we can get Mr Peabody and Sherman to take us to one of those games in the Wayback Machine?

Welker was a Star in Miami.

    ______

Uh, no he wasn’t. In 3 seasons there he caught a grand total of 100 passes with 1 td. In his best season there, he averaged 42 yards a game and had 1 TD.

  82. joker65 says: Mar 12, 2016 9:43 AM

back to the way it use to be when the Bills killed you every year.

    ____

This actually never happened. The Bills and Pats have been playing each other since the 60’s. Here is the win-loss by decade:

    1960’s Pats 11-9-1
    1970’s Bills 12-8
    1980’s Pats 13-6
    1990’s Bills 12-8
    2000’s Pats 18-2
    2010’s Pats 10-2

Even before Brady, the Pats had a better record against the Bills. Since Brady, they have just extended that lead.

Even during the Bills 1990’s, when the Bills were their best, it wasn’t dominant.

Belichick and the Patriots staff will coach him out of all those bad habits and he will be productive. Brady is throwing to him now. You must not be paying attention the past 15 years.

7-11 is about to go prime time in 2016.

hogan is a good guy and a good 2nd/3rd look receiver, brady will make him a star and will be the breakout fantasy WR of 2016.

hate to see hogan go, but 2016 is when the bills are in salary cap hell with how they structured all their contracts.
