Broncos trade Eagles a draft pick for Mark Sanchez

AP

The Broncos have a quarterback again.

I suppose.

According to Mike Klis of KUSA in Denver, the Broncos have sent a conditional draft pick to the Eagles for spare quarterback Mark Sanchez.

That gives them someone other than Trevor Siemian on the depth chart, but hardly seems like an answer after Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler bolted for Houston.

And Sanchez was no longer needed in Philadelphia, such that he ever was, once Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel were signed.

Sanchez is signed at a reasonable backup rate ($4.5 million), and it seems reasonable to think the Broncos are still looking for a starter.

  1. The winner is Mark Sanchez. Now he gets to sit behind RGIII and probably win another Superbowl. Definitely has a chance now that he is out of the blackhole that is the Eagles franchise.

  2. I’m not a fan of Howie Rossman but he’s making some treat trades right now. I can’t believe a team would give anything for him. They would have cut him.

  3. I’m not saying Sanchez is good – he isn’t – and I know that the butt fumble is basically his legacy, but in fairness, he HAS accomplished some things in this league, has won a bunch of road playoff games, and has put up more than a few impressive games in his career.

Again, he isn’t one of the top 20 or 25 quarterbacks in the NFL. But I just don’t think he deserves to be a punchline. He’s a good backup – and that’s an important position in the NFL.

And as Peyton Manning would say, “That’s all I have to say about that.”

  4. Keep watching to see the “Bronco Buttfumble Part II” coming soon to a field near you!!!

This is the beginning of the end for their old horse faced GM….

  5. The Eagles just traded the best QB on their roster and you got dopes ready to name streets after their GM. You can’t make this stuff up.

  6. yeah, he’ll win the bowl with that defense as long as they run 65 times per game.

    lol

  7. Sanchez is proven winner in college and the NFL. Siemian is perhaps the smartest QB I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to see what he does. The Broncos right now have two legit QBs and we don’t even know what their draft plans are. They could conceivably end up with the best QB from this draft. Stranger things have happened. At this point, I’m watching and learning from John Elway, not making a fool of myself trying to second guess this football genius.

  8. Lmao, Butt Fumble!! That’s actually worse than Manning with a dead arm. Elway’s a genius!!

  9. I watched just about every Sanchez game with the Jets: He just finds a way to make 2 really stupid plays per game. I mean really bad.

I remember watching a young Andy Pettitte. Used to always find a way to throw a few fat FB’s in the zone 2nd time through the order. Dude. Make them chase. SOMETHING.

Pettitte fixed that (more or less) but Sanchez never did.

  10. NICE! As long as he stops drinking those chocolate cake shots the night before games. (You know what I’m walking about Sanchize). He can take them to back to back AFC Championship games. My wife can now wear her #6 Mrs S shirt again.

  11. Not a fan of Howie Rosman but he’s making good trades and signings right now. I can’t believe someone would give up something for Sanchez, they were going to cut him.

  12. People are going to laugh at this and I’m sure the down votes will flow freely… But that said, Sanchez will do better than Osweiler or Manning did last year if he ends up starting. Guy was knocking on the door of the SB twice if I recall…

  13. This is actually a good plan B for the Broncos, Put Sanchez on a team with a great defense that runs a pro offense and he maybe good enough to go deep in the playoffs like he did with the Jets…..If it works it will give Elway time to draft adn groom his replacement…..Good move….

  14. Broncos won with a mediocre QB in Big Bro Manning, so now they think they can win with a less-than-mediocre QB in The Sanchize. Interesting… well, if Von Miller can manage to keep doping up and getting after the quarterback, then I suppose the Broncos may have a pretty good chance, eh!

  15. Hey, he was the QB when the Jet’s made it to back to back AFC championship games, they had a great defense. Seattle made it to 2 SB’s with mediocre/bad QB play. Stranger things have happened.

“The pick is a 9th rounder, the condition being that the draft is expanded to 9 rounds within the next year.”

Original comedy is becoming harder and harder to find in these comment sections, but this is pure gold. Well done.

  17. sanchez is actually very capable of being pretty good as long as he has the weapons around him which is something that the broncos definitely have. is he the long term answer? likely not. however, he’s not a bad plan B.

  18. “But, but, he played in TWO AFC championship games” – Jets fans prior to them jettisoning him.

Seriously? Did you see dude’s performance against the Bucs? Eagles fans couldn’t wait to get Bradford back.

  19. All we’ve heard from Bronco fan is ‘we don’t need Osweiler. We can win it all with a mediocre quarterback and our top five defense ‘.
    We’re bout to out.

I’ll have some of what he’s having.

  21. I would think most would say that the Broncos Def should be really good again next year. That being said all you need and all Manning did was manage the game and not loose it. The running game and Def/special teams will win games. Your QB will make some plays but just manage for the most part. That being said even if your a fan or not, why not bring Tebow in? Like him, hate him, don’t think much of him or what ever he wins!

  22. Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Denver Broncos! Thank you Jesus! Thank you Oprah! Thank you Tom Cruise & your crazy space gods!
    Just Thank You!!!!!!!!!!

    Signed,

    Eagles Nation

  23. Denver Bronco’s………shot blown. Sold the future of a consistent contender to win one untainted SB and even that went south with the HGH questions about Manning hovering over them. Let’s be real, the foundation already has huuuuuge cracks in it starting at the most important position on any football team, QB. It was nice seeing you Denver. See you in relevancy land again in about 20 years. That of course assumes you don’t resort to that nasty little habit of cheating the salary cap. Enjoy the butt fumbles as a nice little parting gift.

  24. They keep saying Elway has a plan, I just can’t figure out what it is yet.

I think Broncos should just draft a QB in 1st round and run with it. Maybe have an open competition between all three guys.

Whoever plays can’t be worse that what we had last year.

  25. This headline made my heart drop. The possibility of Sanchez starting the year for the NFL champs is depressing.

  26. Looks like Kaepernick to the Jets then. Broncos are “set” at quarterback now. LOL

  27. Despite Mannings numbers last year, there was a synergy to the Broncos team with him starting. For those of you that dont know what that means, look it up. A lot of you seem to think that the Broncos could have plugged in any qb and still won the Super bowl…not true. .Mannings leadership was an immeasurable intagible that just cannot be replicated so easily.

    ———————————————

You are probably ignoring that the mediocre Big Bro outplayed Brady in the AFCCG, and that Brady was only able to produce once the two safety starters went down.

  29. For those who say he’s a solid backup I say this:

    86 career TDs
    83 career INTs

That’s not a fluke. His decision making under pressure is awful.

  30. Wow so much negativity towards this guy. The buttfumble seems to have clouded people’s memories. But when Sanchez actually had a defense he took the Jets to 2 straight AFC championship games, and was very close to converting one of those in to a Super Bowl appearance. Then the Jets dismantled the team and took away all skills players and things just went downhill for him. It wasn’t his fault though, after those first 2 seasons the Jets didn’t have anyone on the team who could get open to save their lives

  31. You do realize the Rose Bowl is not the Super Bowl right…..

I know these guys are nowhere near the same league, but Namath had more Int’s than TD’s in his career, Farve has the record for Int’s in NFL history. Sanchez is very capable of being a solid fill-in QB for any team.

  33. I watched Sanchez a few of those games when the Eagles won 10 games a couple of years ago, and Sanchez did well and even had a few 300 yard passing games.

When a team is stacked, Sanchez can get the job done. If the Broncos can fix that running game, Sanchez can win them 10 games with the defense they have.

  34. I would have went with Nick Foles… but good luck Denver.

He did help the Jets get to AFC Championship games under the advice of don’t mess up hand it off and let the defense do the rest.

So maybe this will help him kick it old school…. but as of this moment the AFC West seems like it us up for grabs.

  35. If Sanchez choose number 6 he’ll be the same number as Bubby Brister when he took over for Elway

  36. I hope Sanchez get the opportunity to start.
To show the AFC that he’s improved, and to be feared.

    Hahahaha
Ok you got me. He’s terrible.
It would be funny to see a team have to start him for several games.
And to give up anything for him, thats just hilarious.

  37. Sanchez is terrible under pressure. Horrible. Why on earth do you sign him? Ever.

Bring Bubby back for gods sake.

Been a heck of a week for Denver.

  38. Unlike everyone else here, apparently, I like the move.

If you need a quarterback to take a team on their shoulders and make huge plays to bail everyone out, you’ve got the wrong guy. But, if you’re looking for a guy to hand the ball off 35-40 times a game, throw quick passes off of play action, and generally manage the game: the Sanchize is just the guy you’re looking for. He excelled in his first few seasons by riding the defense and running game to the AFC Championship by staying out of the way and at only 4.5 million dollars, he lets you have enough cap space to breathe.

  39. Didn’t the New York Jets with Mark Sanchez as their starting QB beat the New England Patriots in Foxboro in a playoff game several years ago? Not a lot of other quarterbacks can say that.

    ————————————————————

    That’s great! Who woulda thought?!!

  41. I have officially went from OK to needing to puke. There is no way I can imagine Elway and Kubiak even discussing this as an option. Either they are proven correct or this will be the butt, of all jokes. In Kubiak’s words, “we’re fixin to find out”.

  42. 2 years with the Eagles:
12 games as as a starter
    18 TDs – 15 Ints – 4 fumbles lost
    5-7 W/L (0-3 in 2015)

To give up any pick for a stiff who would have been cut smacks of desperation and a fear Kap, RG3 or Fitz may elude them.

Bradford to Denver on draft day, get the old lame gang back together!!

  43. Many of you will be eaten your words, Sanchez not only has a heart for his heritage, but for his game as well. Elway would not have brought him to the Mile High otherwise…

Just sit back and watch a repeat, and that’s all I have to say.

This is why they are constantly on the losing end. The pro-eagles fervor is mounting. These idiots can taste the preseason championship floating through the air and it’s still only March.

  46. Been saying for days now that Elway knows a thing or two about QBs. I said he’d rather come out of retirement than overpay for Fitz. I was wrong! He’d rather have Sanchez! I’ve said for days now that Fitz has neither skill talent pedigree or age of Bradford Cousins or Brock, even Kaep or RG III for that matter. But I am sure Elway either sees something in Mark and/or he has other plans & contingencies. He has proven he knows what he’s doing. He’s won that division for 5 straight yrs with Kyle Orton, TEBOW, & a good & bad Manning / Brock. So please. Let’s all relax. Proves Jets right. Jets under new & very different regime. Broncos just won a SB. Jets moving in the right direction. Let’s all relax.

  47. Should have kept Osweiler who at least showed he can play under big lights. Why would you put turnover prone QB in a Kubiak’s offense? Look what happened to Matt Schaub. Elway is driving the Broncos off the cliff and nobody can stop him it seems.

  48. Some perspective for you donkey-heads:

Bubby Brister is/was the better number six for both the jets and broncos…

  49. How soon people forget. Remember when Sánchez was the Sánchize? Everyone thought he was great because the jets were winning. The jets were winning because of their defense. Same goes for the 2015 Broncos. Sánchez is all they need in Denver. The quarterback is not an important part of the team when the defense and running fame are winning games. All the quarterback s expected to do is not lose. Kaepernick and Sánchez are basically the same. Both were made to look good because of the rest of the team. Sánchez is good enough to quarterback the Broncos.

  50. MS has consistently demonstrated mediocrity and at times outright horrible play. He has a powerful arm, but his judgment seems poor, maybe not able to read defenses well. Perhaps the pressure of the situation just gets to him.

The Broncos have been raped (partially self-rape) in the free agent market. The first priority should have been Osweiller. Then they stupidly allow CJ Anderson to get a good offer. It was clear they were going to lose some in the free agent market but they have compounded their weak position with poor strategy. Elway is not looking like a genius now. He seems overwhelmed with the maintaining the team.

  51. For clarity, the conditional pick traded for Sanchez is for the 2017 draft. It might help to be clear about what the transaction was.

  52. The dolphins should trade Tannehill to Denver for their first and third round picks and the Phins should draft a qb and start over with the qb whisperer because he sucks

  53. It’s strange that one of the best QB’s of the SB era won one as a GM without much production from the QB position. It’s even stranger that he appears to be willing to defend that championship by attempting to do it again

  54. We’ve been hearing that the Broncos don’t necessarily need a superstar QB with their defense. I would assume they prefer Sanchez is the backup to someone else, but they could still likely at least make the playoffs with Sanchez starting if the defense plays like last year.

    —————————
No one is giving up two 3rds for Tannehill, much less a 1st and a 3rd.

  56. Wow. The Broncos are really desperate for a QB! They’d have been better off letting Elway start than bringing in the butt fumble guy.

I can’t believe all the teams who have been willing to pay Sanchez money. Did they not see him play with the Jets?

  57. “The Broncos have a quarterback again.

    I suppose.”

I had just started a beer when I read the opening two lines………then I had to go get a paper towel to clean up after I spit half a mouthful on the monitor…that is awesome!!

  58. Sanchez could bring them back to the big show again, it’s possible with the D that they have. Even a backup or 3rd string guy could have a good year! I just don’t see them getting past Brady again tho

  59. Funny that people are talking smack, but Sanchez helped lead are far lesser team to back to back AFC Championship Games, has someone who is commenting on here done the same, or even been in the NFL, let alone for 8 years as he has?

We’re fans, that is all. Elway has had teams with Tebow, a crippled Manning and more…5 time AFC West Champions, 2 time AFC Champions and Super Bowl 50 Champions…I think he has a clue what he is doing.

  60. Talk about full circle. They trade Tim tebow to the jets from Denver then Sanchez to the Eagles and bring in tebow and now sanchez to the Broncos.

As the Eagles would sing ,”desperado.”

I hope sanchez starts, that means two wins for us. Sell the farm and draft Wentz give up your 1,3 this year and next years 2 & 3. Low picks and someone will bite and build again. You have a lot of picks this year and next so don’t lose out on time. Why pay for a qb now that’s subpar when you know VM is going to ask for a 100 mill to start negotiating.
No one is coming out next year if you go 6-10 or 7-9 b/c you will be far down 16-19 to get a solid qb. You can afford to have a bad season after winning it all. Start it now so in two years the d will be young in most key areas to make a run again.

  61. as a chiefs fan i thought the broncos had it made in the shade with osweiler…but with sanchez the chiefs d -line and linebackers are pinning their ears back and licking their chops to come after this guy!!!….

  62. Dunno what the fuss is about, Sanchez is an upgrade to Manning. The guy had a QB Rating of 9… Yes NINE in the SB. Sanchez is definitely an upgrade to the old version of Manning.

  63. Denver better sign lots of running backs.. They’ll be running the rock a ton…

  64. He has all the talent. Going into the draft I honestly thought he was easily the one QB who translated well to the NFL. I think he let all that “Sanchize” talk get to him. Too much partying and not enough studying. Also, the Jets did him no favors with the talent around him. That all said, its up to him now, if he gets this shot he better work for it. Now he better hope the Broncs get him an o-line because last years was pretty bad and they have lost players since
