Colts add backup quarterback Scott Tolzien

Andrew Luck has a new backup.

The Colts have agreed to terms with veteran backup quarterback Scott Tolzien, giving them a new name on the quarterback depth chart after the retirement of Matt Hasselbeck and the release of Josh Freeman.

Tolzien has spent the last three years backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. In 2013 he started two games but did not play well, throwing one touchdown pass and five interceptions.

The Colts hope Tolzien plays better than that for them. More importantly, the Colts hope Tolzien never has to play at all.

I knew that name was familiar, just couldn’t place it.

Hope he got that Chase Daniel money so we get a decent comp pick.

    Happy for you, Scott!

Will this rate a new banner?

Jesus I hope we’re still looking at other options

Well, my son will be happy. He was wanting Brett Hundley to be A-Rod’s back up last year as a rookie. Now he gets his wish.

I’m glad he opted for Indianapolis over Chicago. Now at least we won’t have to worry about him tipping off the Bears defense twice a year.

    This is a game changer.

This guy is very good, has a very strong arm, and could start if given enough playing time.

I can tell you this……if he was given as much time as Bridgewater has had, it wouldn’t have come down to a frustrating Wide Left.

Very good pickup for the Colts. Simply no room in Green Bay with Hundley designated as the #2.

Tolzien can play. This is a great get for the Colts.

Good for him! Outstanding young man, hard worker and a true class act! Congratulations!

Dude was signed a few days before the season started in 2013, then our first two QBs go down and he’s thrown into the lineup with only Jarrett Boykin and Quarless to throw to…

He did alright here and there, threw some interceptions – but considering he was learning on the fly and what not.

He looked pretty good in the preseason these last two years when he actually knew the playbook.

He’ll be a great backup for the colts.

Happy for Scott, dude is a baller.

Is this Grigson’s answer to a run defense?

  14. h0metownzero says: Mar 11, 2016 8:13 PM

Wow. The Vikings could have finally solved their perpetual QB debacle. Good for the Colts though.

At what point do we just admit we need to move our team away from Green Bay?

NOBODY wants to play here. Nobody. No how. No way. Not here. No part. Not Green. Not Bay. Nothing.

  16. bondlake says: Mar 11, 2016 9:03 PM

Jeffrey, why don’t you just go home?

Watch for those Scott Tolzien Colts jerseys to start flying off the shelf…

This is a good pickup by the Colts. Tolzien is a solid backup who really improved himself in Green Bay.

He has talent and learned backing up one of the best.

Congratulations Mr Tolzein. You were a good backup for GB and from all accounts a super nice person. Good “luck” in Indy.

He can play. Compare to Hasselbeck.

Hey, finally some free agent news involving the Packers! I thought that might have been enough to distract the cheesers’ from their obsession with the Vikings, but from reading the comments above, apparently not.

Congrats, Scott. The state of WI and many others are still pulling for you. Classy is as classy does.

  24. cribbage12 says: Mar 12, 2016 12:06 AM

The Packers still have the 2 best QBs in the NFCN, but no longer the best 3.

  25. whatjusthapped says: Mar 12, 2016 12:09 AM

He is a much better pick up than most people realize. He did play poorly three years ago in two starts but has shown to be solid in the two preseasons since when Rodgers hardly plays. I think his qb rating was north of 100 in those preseasons. More importantly, has a big arm, can throw the deep ball and can run from the pocket with good speed. In other words, he’s better than Bridgewater which isn’t setting the bar too high but still

Tolzien saw the writing on the wall and got out when the cash was still good. Next to leave will be Starks. Like rats leaving a sinking ship…

I don’t know much about him, but from the comments it sounds like we got a good backup and a classy individual. Welcome to Indy Scott.
