Jets bringing Kelvin Beachum in for a free agent visit

The Jets are taking a look at a free agent left tackle, though they already have a pretty good one.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Jets are bringing in Steelers tackle Kelvin Beachum for a visit soon.

Beachum tore his ACL last season, one of the many offensive injuries the Steelers had to overcome. But if he’s well enough to take visits and physicals now, it’s a good sign for his progress.

It’s also an interesting piece of leverage with veteran D’Brickashaw Ferguson, who is due to make $8.625 million in base salary along with a $1 million roster bonus this year. The 32-year-old Ferguson wasn’t himself last year, and when asked about a potential pay cut/restructuring this offseason, General Manager Mike Maccagnan declined to answer.

Ferguson’s carrying a $14.1 million cap number, and getting him to take less would help do other things — like sign a quarterback. And bringing Beachum in might be just the spark that negotiation needs.
