Sanchez arrival doesn’t end potential pursuit of Kaepernick

Mark Sanchez AP

Yes, the Broncos have acquired quarterback Mark Sanchez from the Eagles. No, it doesn’t mean the process is over.

However, as one source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT, it does mean that chatter of an imminent trade for quarterback Colin Kaepernick (or other moves) should die down.

The source says that much of the talk, especially rumors and speculation of a quick deal for Kaepernick, was off the mark from the get-go. It’s unclear why incorrect information about Denver’s motivations was emerging. It’s possible that, for example, the 49ers were leaking it in order to generate a trade market for Kaepernick. It’s also possible that, for example, a coach or G.M. from the Browns or Jets (or another team) who wants to acquire Kaepernick was trying to create a sense of urgency in order to spur action by his team.

For now, it’s clear that the Broncos aren’t necessarily done. The team has announced that conditional late-round 2017 draft pick was sent to Philadelphia for Sanchez. One source tells PFT that the formula hinges on Sanchez making the 53-man roster in Denver, and that the pick could increase based on playing time.

As a practical matter, the move allows the Broncos (and, perhaps more importantly, the fans and media) to calm down. With Sanchez on board, the Broncos can move forward into the offseason program with him, Trevor Siemian, and anyone else they acquire via free agency or the draft.

At some point, they could add Kaepernick, Ryan Fitzpatrick, or another starting-caliber player. For now, acquiring Sanchez allows the Broncos (and, perhaps more importantly, the fans and media) to refrain from declaring an emergency and breaking glass.

Sanchez is an ok #3 QB, so no it shouldn’t stop them for looking for a #2 who could fill the open #1 vacancy.

  4. niners816 says: Mar 11, 2016 2:30 PM

Actually the Niners said they were going to keep Kaep if a deal isn’t done in 2 days. The Niners have all the leverage they need. No one is going to give up a 2nd rounder for Kaep. Maybe a 3rd. Kaep needs to quit being butt hurt, learn the new offense and play ball.

ummm its still an emergency, Denver… we have a problem.

  6. 4thquartermagic says: Mar 11, 2016 2:31 PM

Good ‘ol buttfumble. I for one am happy to welcome him. There are slim pickens at starting QB, even fewer at backup QB.

Now sign CJ’s offer sheet and we can all have a peaceful weekend.

  10. citizenstrange says: Mar 11, 2016 2:40 PM

IMHO ….. Sanchez is about equal to the play the Broncos got from the quarterback position last year. Kaepernick would be equal too.

Fitzpatrick would be an upgrade. The Broncos should bite the bullet and sign him for 2 years while the #1 Bronco defense holds open the Super Bowl window.

    ===============

Yes, because no team has ever lied about their intentions. Do you really think the 49ers are going to pay $12 million to a guy who doesn’t even want to be there to sit on the bench? That would be idiotic. They’re only saying that in hopes that someone (maybe you, but not any NFL GM) will believe them.

  21. myopinionisrighterthanyours says: Mar 11, 2016 3:03 PM

Pretty soon it’ll get to the point where the Brown will start making fun of the Broncos QB situation, if they weren’t pursuing the same QBs.

  22. maestro1899 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:04 PM

The uneducated fans will think this is a terrible move.

This is a GREAT move for Denver. Sanchez is a great fit for the West Coast Offense and all of Kube’s rollouts and boots. Sanchez has a cheap salary and won’t cost a 2nd rd pick (like Kaep). Sanchez’s cheap salary will allow Denver to sign a guy like Eric Weddle or upgrade the o-line (Bobby Massie?).

Sanchez was at his best when he had a shutdown Jets Defense with a stout run game. In fact, he led the Jets to 2 straight Conference Championship games.

If you only need a “Caretaker” at QB with some athleticism to run Kube’s offense, why not take a cheap option in terms of both salary and draft pick compensation?

Oh, and they will draft someone to compete and hopefully win the job. My vote is Kevin Hogan.

  23. troylok says: Mar 11, 2016 3:07 PM

Sanchez is just a middle of the road QB, but he is more athletic than Manning was at the end of his career. With Denver’s defense, they can go to the Superbowl with Sanchez playing.

  24. stealthjunk says: Mar 11, 2016 3:16 PM

OMG, Denver will be doomed without Manning and Brock “$72 Million” Osweiler! Just look at these QB ratings!

Brian Hoyer (2015): 91.4 QB rating
Mark Sanchez (2014): 88.6 QB rating
Ryan Fitzpatrick (2015): 88.0 QB rating
Geno Smith (2015): 87.9 QB rating
RG3 (2014 before being benched): 86.9 QB rating
Brock “$72 Million” Osweiler (2015): 86.4 QB rating
Peyton Manning (2015): 67.9 QB rating

  25. orangeandbluethroughandthrough says: Mar 11, 2016 3:17 PM

Kap came from Nevada, everyone knew he needed a little time to adjust. He got in ahead of Alex Smith before anyone thought he would and got to the Super Bowl. Since then the 49er’s have been a blackhole of talent, each year losing more and more talent.

Who has HELPED him in the last two years, besides Kurt Warner? Talent + coaching + time = value and that’s what Denver needs right now.

Anyone who has played franchise mode in Madden knows you can’t pay everyone when all of a sudden players with 15 career sacks and 11 career touchdowns passes average a crazy $40 million in guarantees.

  27. silverfox1111 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:24 PM

The Jets and their media mafia are doing everything in their power to blow smoke and get Fitzpatrick to sign a “way below market” deal. The Sanchez Eagles’ contract only guaranteed $1M in 2016 … Broncos will cut him by the season start if they find an alternative.

  28. mrnick66 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:26 PM

The only upside is remember the first year with the jets! The Broncos have a more dominant defence, and run game

There’s a reason that the Eagles brought in Chase “2 NFL starts” Daniels as the backup over Mark “Buttfumble” Sanchez. Bronco’s fans refuse to recognize that. But what they can’t overlook is the cost to the salary cap which is 4.5 mil and you still need to sign a draft class. Good luck with that.

  32. kcchiefs19 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:42 PM

Don’t go to sleep on Trevor Siemian folks…I live in Denver and he actually has some potential…right now he is #2.

Imagine how Ponder feels…he was on the roster for a few weeks in the fall…and NO ONE is talking about brining him in..Look for Fitzpatrick to come in.

  33. whenwilliteverend says: Mar 11, 2016 3:42 PM

Maybe they are trying to be the first franchise to go from Super Bowl champ to #1 overall pick because that’s what will happen if they think Mr. Butt-fumble is going to be their QB.

  34. bigblue431 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:43 PM

  35. whenwilliteverend says: Mar 11, 2016 3:43 PM

If they think the answer at QB is for Kaeperstink to be their #1 and Sanchez their #2 then I think they should be on Hard Knocks next year because that’s going to be an interesting year for them.

  36. eagles777 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:45 PM

Why stop with Sanchez? IF the Browns sign Kaep, then Wentz will be there at the 8 pick. Eagles can trade Sam Bradford to the Broncos for their first and third pick.

  38. bigblue431 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:48 PM

Look Bronco’s fans, before you panic…much more anyway, just remember good ole Brock-a-nator had a total of 7 starts. He was…OK. He had some good games, but boy he had some bad ones too. He was NOT worth top tier QB money.

Sanchez is who he is (not a very good consistent QB), but he’s had some success in the league, more than the Brock-o-mania. He’s also more athletic than Brock-lobster, and that can open up things a little for whomever is your running back.

I don’t think you lost that much with Brock-o-li, and you still need a long-term QB with either him or Mark “watch out for that butt!!” Sanchez

  39. dogsweat9 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:51 PM

If anything But Fumble’s arrival makes it a more desperate situation.

  41. bigblue431 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:53 PM

Look Broncos fans, before you panic even more over a$$-cheeks Sanchez, remember than Brock-o-mania started a whopping 7 games, and he was sooooo good that they sat him down for Peyton “I’m better than Ei again” Manning, even though he has the body of an 80 year old (although the mind of a Marine General).

Elway was right not to pay top $$ to Brock-lobster. Sanchez is what he is but he’s had success in this league, more than Brock-o-li at least at this point, and is more athletic than Brock-lobster.

So, as between Sanchez and Brock-a-lot, you didn’t really lose much. You didn’t gain much either, so you are where you were – long-term need of a franchise QB.

  42. vbe2 says: Mar 11, 2016 3:55 PM

Hey, if you have something else to put forward other than an empty statement, please do. The thing people seem to keep forgetting is that Manning and Osweiler were subpar last year. Everyone acts like they carried the team to the Super Bowl and Denver is doomed without them. The reality is that the available (or soon to be available) free agents are just as good, if not better, than both of them and that Denver will be just fine.

  44. boltergeist19 says: Mar 11, 2016 4:12 PM

Elway, your backup plan should be called, “I am a dumbass plan.” People can you say, ” this is what we call screwing up a good thing.” Man have the really took a great team and turned it into a mediocre team. This team will fall back to the pack not make playoffs then blow it all up after they go 6-10 next year and somehow start paying under the table again. WATCH!!!!

  45. JSpicoli says: Mar 11, 2016 4:16 PM

    Hey Einsteins

Kaepernick sucks and no one is going to trade for him. Unless the 49ers pay someone to give them a seventh rounder. He has low value as a reclamation project. If he was smart he would go back to baseball . He will be out of the NFL this season. All the trade talk you have heard has been stirred up by the 49ers leak mill.

And please tell me some more high end team management strategy based on what you learned in Madden. LOL

Mark Sanchez is certainly an upgrade over Peyton Manning from last season. Besides, they don’t need a STAR at QB, just someone that can make very few mistakes and pass the ball with very few interceptions. Mark didn’t get much time this last season at Philly but the previous season he demonstrated that he was MORE than capable of moving the ball deep downfield. That’s probably the tapes that Elway was looking at ! “Fight On !!”

I am a Broncos fan and I acknowledge that. This is bad, very very bad. I can only hope that he will not start and be the backup. Although I am not sure he can beat out Trevor Siemian at this point. He will end up being cut. The only good news is that his low salary and no draft compensation make it a low risk/low reward move.

Yeah, he can move the ball downfield but has a horrible tendency to commit turnovers at the most critical times, costing his team points and ultimately the game.

  60. stakex says: Mar 11, 2016 7:17 PM

Obviously Sanchez isn’t the worlds best QB and is hardly an ideal solution… but he’s good enough to keep Denver competitive with their defense. After all, Denver didn’t exactly get a lot of stellar play from the QB position last year, especially in the playoffs, and still walked off with a Super Bowl win.

  61. nouhoh64 says: Mar 11, 2016 7:32 PM
