Bears add linebacker Jerrell Freeman

AP

Four years ago, the Colts reached up to Canada to land linebacker Jerrell Freeman. He’s now changing addresses again.

Freeman has signed with the Bears. Per a league source, it’s a three-year, $12 million deal. Of the amount, $6 million is guaranteed. (It’s unclear how much of it is fully guaranteed.) He can earn another $2 million in incentives.

Undrafted by the Titans in 2008, Freeman spent three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughiders. In four years with the Colts, he started 57 regular-season games and five playoff games.

  1. This Bears D is shaping up to be something scary along the front 7 with the Trevaethan & Freeman additions to go along with McPhee, Houston & Young rotating along the outside. If they land Hicks we’re looking at a top 5 defense under Fangio this year!

  2. If you don’t know about Canadian football the truth is they have players good players I wish it was on TV down here more I wish it was easier to follow. the NFL shoul consider more of a relationship a possible way to train back up quarterbacks to work on offense/defensive depth

  3. This defense will be solid this season. Into the top 15, being conservative. Add another strong draft class w 9 picks, that is deep in D Line. 2017 Bears will be a force again! I LOVE what Pace is doing! Keep it up!

  4. Ryan Pace is doing mad work. This now completely takes ILB off the board for the draft for the Bears unless they want to take a flyer in the 3rd round or below (Jaylon Smith or maybe the kid out of Temple) to be groomed for a season or two.

Pace must be some kind of smooth talker cause he is signing these guys for very average cash. If he can close the deal with Akiem Hicks yet and then double down on the 5-Tech with A’Shaun Robinson in the draft we are back in the defense business. Even if Hicks falls through it has been a very good week for Bears fans and even more so Vic Fangio.

  5. Nice pick up for the D!

McPhee, Trevathan, Freeman, Houston, Young, Jones, Timu, Anderson.

Fangio is probably a lot happier with his LB crew.

Now lets get a couple front three guys. We need a couple dudes to support Eddie Goldman in the middle.

  6. Its nice knowing the Bears can go out and sign some very good players and have the coaches in place to maximize their value. This has such a different feel than the Bears of the past. Getting fired up about this!

  7. If the Bears truly are going to draft BPA, AShawn Robinson is not the pick… I love what Pace is doing doing but let’s not ruin it by reaching in the draft.. Robinson is a late teens early 20 selection.. Bears draft at 11…

  8. It will certainly be nice to see Singletary’s #50 worn by a LB who is worthy of it again.

  9. I usually don’t like early year free agency signings because they usually wreck the cap and SO MUCH is dependent on scheme. But, even as a Packers fan, the Bears LB signings the (for the cash) have been really good this week. Damn.

Now, if only they had any players on the left side of the OL, some 5 Techs, a secondary and a QB, they’d be in business. 😉

I bet they still don’t make the playoffs…..hahaha

Swaz22, keep your arm chair expertise to your self, it’s embarrassing.

With that said, Bears D is looking damn impressive now, close top 10 D for sure.

  11. Moses74, like I said before I bet they still don’t make the playoffs. If you don’t like what I have to say I don’t know what to tell you.

  12. Great signing by the Bears. As a Saskatchewanian, and a Roughriders’ fan, I followed Freeman’s time in the CFL, and loved having him on my team.

No one is expecting the Bears to make the playoffs, that fact that you even brought it up reflects your insecurity about a Bears FA acquisition in their second year under some top NFL coaches with sound upper management. Your negativity is a blatant reaction to some very positive moves by the Bears and it’s obvious.

  14. Colts just lost their best run stopper to a contract that doesn’t look very big. What in God’s name are they thinking? Or is it so bad in Indy that Freeman just wanted out?
