Phil Dawson re-signs with 49ers

Kicker Phil Dawson was one of a dwindling number of NFL players who were active in the 1990s and still playing in 2015.

With Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson and Matt Hasselbeck calling it a career, that number will be smaller in 2016 but Dawson will remain among the ranks. According to multiple reports, Dawson has signed a one-year contract that will keep him with the 49ers.

That output was enough for Dawson to be voted by the team’s coaches as the winner of the Bill Walsh Award for team MVP last season. That says more about the way the 49ers season unfolded than about Dawson, although the kicker turned in another solid campaign in a career that stretches back to 1999.

Dawson made 24-of-27 field goals and 20-of-21 extra points. Dawson hit all three of his field goal attempts from beyond 50 yards, but ceded kickoff duties to punter Bradley Pinion in an arrangement that will likely continue next season.
