The Chargers have added some help to their secondary.

Free agent cornerback Casey Hayward has agreed to terms with the Chargers, Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Hayward has played his entire NFL career with the Packers. He started 11 games last year and this year will serve as a replacement to Patrick Robinson, a free agent cornerback who is not expected to return to San Diego this year.

The 26-year-old Hayward is the No. 47 player on our Free Agent Hot 100.

Great his rookie year. Pedestrian ever since.

Maybe an upgrade over Brandon Flowers.

Good value..Surprised the Pack didn’t make a push for him at that price.

Great role player, nickel back, not big enough or fast enough to play outside

  5. northpackalacky says: Mar 13, 2016 4:25 PM

He’s a good CB in the prime of his career. Good pickup for the Chargers if the $ is reasonable.

  6. shaggytoodle says: Mar 13, 2016 4:27 PM

He did have an amazing start 6 INTs in his first season, then injury issues. and had 3 in his last 35 games.

Last off season I figured GB wouldn’t feel pressure to pay House a ton of money, because they had Hayward. This off-season there wasn’t as much pressure to pay Hayward because of Rollins, and Randall.

It’ll be tough for him to wash off the stench of losing in embarrassingly grand fashion.

  9. deltaoracle says: Mar 13, 2016 4:38 PM

Not a surprise; everyone seemed to know he’d be leaving since other guys were getting more time. Good luck to him.

  10. gtodriver says: Mar 13, 2016 4:46 PM

I thought resigning his own FA’s was Ted’S version of participation.

    Has Ted woke up yet?

  11. purpleguy says: Mar 13, 2016 4:59 PM

Above average slot corner — if used right, can be a strong signing by SD.

  12. suncawy says: Mar 13, 2016 5:02 PM

So, according to the top 100 free agents, he is only 2 spots better than Robinson. Hopefully, he’s a lot cheaper.

You want to talk about “washing off the stench of losing in embarrassingly grand fashion?”

Casey Hayward is a solid player, great slot cover guy..

But, but, but, but packer fans were saying that he would take the league minimum to stay in turd town ! Maybe he is sick of coming in 2nd place?

Wow this team has some great depth at DB.

Starters are Jason Verrett Brandon Flowers,
Add in Casey Howard, Steve Williams, Craig Mager
Safeties- Jalen Ramsey, Jahleel Addai, Darrell Stucky, Dwight Lowery, Adrian Phillips.

If QBs take that extra half second our blanket coverage can add to those young pass rushers putting more pressure on QBs and start getting hella sacks or force throws into coverage for picks. Last place schedule could put us back into a playoff bid.

    DRAFT= 8 picks two scenarios
    1rd- Jalen Ramsey / DB. 1rd- DeForest Buckner-DE
    2rd- Kenny Clark /DE. 2rd-Jack Allen- C
    3rd- Max Tuerk / C. 3rd- Josh Doctson -WR
4rd-Austin Hooper / TE. 4rd- Austin Hooper -TE
    5th-Scooby Wright /MLB. 5rd- Keith Marshall-RB
    6th-Cardale Jones / QB. 6rd-Cardale Jones -QB
6rd- Pharoh Cooper /WR.6rd-Austin Beck -LT
7rd- Ronand Blair /DE. 7rd- Tyrique Jarrett -DT

Turd Thompson might want to wake up. I thought he signs his own. Now he doesn’t even do that.
Packer fans have to be worried that he is wasting Rodgers career.
He drafts busts after bust. Eventually you have to be able to draft more than WRs.
A lot of holes on that team. Wow

  19. gtodriver says: Mar 13, 2016 5:37 PM

    Delta

Walsh may have missed a 27 yard FG, but the entire Packer defense missed Larry Fitzgerald for 75 yards.

And the year before, settled for FGs instead of going for TDs.

Two epic failures in a row.,.🙂

You’ve been posting the same “league minimum and the Packers” comment about each and every free agent signing article for the past month. I guess originality is not your strong suite.

  21. shaggytoodle says: Mar 13, 2016 5:42 PM

TT has had over 70 Draft Picks in his time at GB even if he wanted to keep all of them its impossible as only 53 the can make the Roster.

Thats just talking simple Football basics, maybe try getting those things down, before talking about stuff like the Drafting of Free Agency

  22. h0metownzero says: Mar 13, 2016 5:59 PM

I think the heroic Richard Rodgers Hail Mary against Detroit last season illustrates one of the better examples of Ted’s strategy in free agency. People sometimes forget that we got him with the 3rd round compensatory pick for losing a washed up Greg Jennings to the Vikings.

In fact, Jennings was already long gone from the Vikings when that happened – even though there were millions of dollars of dead cap money left from the stupid deal Spieldope gave him. Ted will be collecting those dividends from Viking stupidity for many years.

Of course the bewildered Viking fan base has no idea what’s going on, or why they can’t ever win a championship.

    Better football.

    For better people.

  23. greenbaychicksarefat says: Mar 13, 2016 6:11 PM

Someone tell Ted Thompson that free agency has started. The Packers were average last yr & they have signed nobody so far.

  24. cribbage12 says: Mar 13, 2016 6:24 PM

This is what a great GM and coaching staff will do for a good ball player. TT gets 2 studs in the ’15 draft and has the insight to sign UDFA Gunther, and they can afford their starting corner to leave which will provide a nice compensatory pick next year.

    GoPackGo!!!!!

  25. kcarpenter1245 says: Mar 13, 2016 6:44 PM

I’ve always questioned people that mocked his “size to play outside” he’s prototypical corner size at 5’11” and he weighs in at around 195. To put that in comparison, Sam Shields, the Packers #1 corner, is 5’11” 185 and plays better outside than anyone on the roster. Speed however I completely agree with. But he has all the traits to play slot and he does it very well. Thanks for your time in GB Casey.

  26. tylawspick6 says: Mar 13, 2016 6:46 PM

This is what happens when you draft poorly and ignore certain parts of your roster. You get yourself into a deeper cap hell and lose in their prime, good draft picks like a Casey Heyward.

    OUCH.

Gotta learn to budget for the players to keep in-house.

Good CB draft class, but still they’ve lost Tramon Williams and Heyward in back to back seasons.

Losing system quality is not a good thing.

You can tell it still stings you, that an Average GB team can be in an Overtime game to have a chance to go to the NFC title game.

While a Successful Vikings season consists is a Division Title and Wild Card exit.

Beside wouldn’t you want TT to not be active in FA? “Because that would make GB worse,” Even though it doesn’t matter, because the Packers have played quite well vs. the Vikings over the past 8 years, without diving into the deep end of the FA pool.

    ————-
It was a foregone conclusion that he would be gone because , the 2 CB’s they drafted last year made him expendable. He couldn’t hack it starting outside, so ended up being a slot CB by the end of the year, but Rollin’s play earned him taking that role.

You mean losing in the first round of the playoffs like the Vikings?

Or losing on the road to a team in the second round that was already heavily favored and had a better team than the Packers last year?

  30. pkrlvr says: Mar 13, 2016 7:29 PM

How are fans of a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since we won our last SB talking sooo much junk? I guess if you are a perrenial loser, one and done is exciting and might get you riled up, but we aren’t impressed. Same old Viking fans talking the same old crap in the offseason.

  31. leshon42 says: Mar 13, 2016 7:38 PM

Casey good luck in SD GB will miss you , not sure why they didnt resign you.especially with randall issue in Ariz over off season arrest

  32. sdcharger123 says: Mar 13, 2016 7:44 PM

Another small risk, potentially high reward signing by Telesco. I’m so glad he isn’t breaking the bank for anyone and is trying to fix the lack of depth.

  33. jhtobias says: Mar 13, 2016 7:44 PM

Forget Viking trolls their just bitter because they have the highest paid female QB in the NFL.

Good pick up for the chargers at a great price. Dude is a great slot cover man and at 5 million a year is a bargain

  34. atthemurph says: Mar 13, 2016 7:49 PM

I’m surprised the vikings didn’t give him $10m per year with $35M guaranteed considering the sorry state of their defensive backfield.

Also surprised they didn’t make Mason Crosby the highest paid kicker in the NFL considering Wide Left is still on the roster.

    —————————–
So much holes and yet Bridgewater couldn’t pass for more than 100 yards with the division on the line and Peterson couldn’t get more than 60 yards in either game…

So much holes and yet they dominated the healthy and loaded Seahawks for 56 minutes.

So much holes along with a million injuries and they still exposed a loaded Cardinal squad.

  37. skolbro28 says: Mar 13, 2016 9:57 PM

Sorry it was fake championships. Don’t count. If the packers were so great, why once the leagues combined did they go through 30 plus years of just plain garbage football. 60s 70s and80s were embarrassing. That time is coming again.
Your run of back to back hall of fame qbs will be over really soon.

  38. Ghost of Troy Williamson says: Mar 13, 2016 10:04 PM

Sorry….I accidentally put 63 in there. So they only won 5 championships in 10 years.
