Competition Committee will look to expand protection against low hits on quarterbacks

The Competition Committee meets this week in advance of the upcoming annual meetings. And one of the items on the agenda will indeed be a potential rule change mentioned here 10 days ago.

As noted by NFL executive V.P. of football operations Troy Vincent, the Committee will look at ways to expand protection against low hits on quarterbacks in the pocket.

But the protection already exists, with defenders not permitted to his quarterbacks in the pocket at or below the knee. The challenge becomes figuring out how to better enforce these protections. The best (and perhaps only) way to do it would be to enhance the penalties for violations of the rule, from increased fines to a quicker path to suspension.
