Patriots latest to take a look at defensive end Chris Long

The Patriots have long been a home for wayward veterans, and it appears they’re taking a look at another one today.

Via the Boston Herald, former No. 2 overall pick Chris Long is visiting the Patriots today.

Long has already scheduled or made visits with Washington, the Falcons and Cowboys.

The soon-to-be-31-year-old Long was released by the Rams after two injury plagued seasons. New England doesn’t seem to be in desperate need at the position, with Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Jabaal Sheard at defensive end along with a pair of 2015 draft picks (third-rounderĀ Geneo Grissom and fourth-rounder Trey Flowers.

But all three of those veterans are entering the final year of their contracts, so they may be looking for depth for the next few years.

Don’t be surprised to see Chandler Jones moved to Jacksonville in a trade involving the Jaguars 2nd round pick, #38. That would give them an early pick, as right now their first selection comes at #60.

So he was in middle school when grandpa Brady got drafted into the NFL?

About the only team this guy hasn’t visited yet is the Boston Red Sox.

Nice idea with Chandler Jones, since they probably aren’t going to resign him after this year, but because 5th yr options are guaranteed money, the Pats take a huge cap hit if they trade him(I think). Really don’t get the Pats interest in Long or Weddle(if true) for this year. Two of their deepest positions as constituted.

Obviously the Pats were not in a position to shop for free agents like in 2001. That said, Safety has become the “hot position” due to all the passing being done in the NFL. So with Wilson leaving they had a spot to fill in the roster. I was hopeful Weddle would end up a Patriot. Oh well, still think Long and Laurenitus would shore up our defense. Good veteran depth. I also agree, this is a good time to flip Chandler Jones for a high 2nd rounder. I think Trey Flowers could be more productive and disruptive. Sign Collins and Hightower and Butler. Resign Blunt if he’s healthy. Draft another OL tackle, running back, DL tackle and speedy WR.
