Chris Long will sign with Patriots

AP

Ex-Rams defensive end Chris Long will sign a one-year deal with the Patriots, ESPN’s Trey Wingo reported Tuesday night.

The addition of Long caps a busy day for the Patriots, who acquired a 2016 second-round pick and guard Jonathan Cooper in a trade for defensive end Chandler Jones earlier Tuesday. Long will join Rob Ninkovich and Jabaal Sheard as veterans currently only under contract through 2016 who will be counted on to pressure opposing passers.

Long first visited the Redskins, then visited the Patriots on Monday. NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported that the Patriots got Long to agree to a deal before he took a visit with the Cowboys.

Long was released by the Rams last month. He took his time with the free agent process in part because his wife recently gave birth to the couple’s first child.

The second overall pick of the 2008 draft has been limited to 18 games and four sacks over the last two seasons while battling injuries. He’ll be 31 later this month.

  1. Why not? He wasted the best years of his career on terribly underperforming Rams teams with garbage QBs. One year bet to try and get a ring with a team that actually has the talent and coaching to do it… can’t blame him at all.

  2. Solid rotational guy to mix in, just like Cooper he’s a low risk/ high reward former top 10 pick who hopefully doesn’t turn out like a Haynesworth

  3. Looks like Cowboys were asleep. They just keep getting beat
in the market. This one is a little different than others as we all
know the Pat’s do not over pay like others.

  4. Nice ego check from Long. He already made his money. Go try to get a ring and who knows, maybe he can resign for 1 more year after 2016?

Subrusher with Geneo Grissom and maybe Rufus Johnson as well.

  5. Nice to see Chris has s great chance to finally be on a playoff team. He deserves it after being on some terrible Ram teams. He showed a lot of class to St. Louis fans when it was announced the team was moving to L.A. One of my all-time favorite St. Louis Rams.

  6. Long’s father grew up in the greater Boston area. I’m not sure how much Long has left, but BB has had a lot of success getting the most out of good pros who are nearing the end. So now the Pats have Sheard – who actually had a better year than Jones per snap. Ninkovitch who has been the most productive overall DE in the league over the last 4 seasons, very steady if not spectacular, Long, and 2 young 2nd year players who showed flashes as rookies in very limited action before ending up on IR. I think they will be OK at the position.

  7. BTW- Losing the first round pick is only frustrating because of the massive injustice that NFL perpetrated in taking it away. When you think about it, not having it hurts, but it won’t make or break the Pats over the next few years.

People forget how more than half of all first round picks fail to make big impacts on their teams in the first place, and those picked at the end of the round where the Pats ALWAYS pick fail even more.

The Pats will have 11 picks (so far) in the draft to help fill an already loaded roster. So the haters and loser owners of teams who are jealous of the Pats CONTINUOUS success will have to try and think of other ways try and take them down.

Anyways the Pats just added two players today (Long and Cooper) who were top 10 picks when they came out. Who needs a draft.

  8. TB12RALLYCRY take what Roger? They still have no first rounder and even if they trade into the first the way it works is. Let’s say the pats trade for the number 1 pick in the draft. They don’t get it they get the 29th pick the one they lost. Besides the fact that lets just for the sake of argument you basically got Long and Cooper and a 2nd for chandler jones you got a guard who was sitting on the bench and will do the same for the pats (they did draft 2 guards who played decent last year) and a guy who has 12.5 sacks in 2 years while playing next to Aaron Donald and Robert Quinn. How is that a win for the pats?

  9. What’s this? Yet ANOTHER TREMENDOUS signing by the 4 time World Champion Patriots? 🙂 WOW! Will they ever do anything wrong?

    🙂

  10. Ya basically traded a 26 yr old, coming off his career year with 12.5 sacks, for a beat up young Guard, and a soon to be 31 yr old. DL who had 1 sack last year….. No one is jealous of the Patriots just because they remember when Chris Long was good…..

  11. craze32….how did the Pat’s just get better? they lost one of the top pass rushers in the NFL who will break the bank next year in FA for a bag of kickoff tee’s. Long is long gone. injured and behind the clock. Cooper is a head case and AZ moved him 3 times in 2 1/2 years. He can’t play anymore. That second rd pick is close to a third. They didn’t get better. you’re whistling past the graveyard.

    I like it!!

Cooper, Long and a #2 for Jones.

    **********************************************************************************************************************

Cooper is BELOW AVERAGE on a GOOD DAY.

Long is OLD & ALWAYS HURT.

Jones is in the PRIME of his Career.

I’d MUCH RATHER have Jones for 2016 and a Compensatory 3rd rounder than Long for 2016 and a 2nd Rounder.

    But That’s Just Me……..

  13. He never even really had a visit with Dallas. Complete cr*p, to make the Joneses look active. They`ve whiffed on almost every single FA. It`s embarrassing. Signed on a ONE year deal before even visiting? Whatever.

  14. The “pay toilets way.” Get rid of players who sold their soul to your org right before you have to pony up the contract. This team uses players on 1 year deals all the time. Hell gronk is starting to chatter about being paid lower then Coby Fleener, and Dwayne Allen now amongst many other TE. Hell Gates just got the same pay as what you are making this year. Wake up, they use you up and spit you out.
Go ahead Gronk jump up and down and raise hell and maybe you will get traded or cut.
Hell you can win it all and be a pro bowl player and they still move on from you unless your Tawmie. They hate 1st rd picks cause they don’t want to pay anybody. The league has caught on to them. Giants did it twice, Denver just did it and I bet the jets finally get them this year. Just pressure the hell out of Tawmie. They don’t run the ball, rush three maybe four, and drop everybody into coverage all the time. That’s the recipe to take them out of their element. Jam the hell out of the little receivers and hit them really hard when tackling them, double gronk the cave man.
10-15 years from now there will be lots of books written about the pay toilet way and what goes on inside of the org and how they were treated and why they should have left and got paid somewhere else as the injuries start mounting. Good luck guys and 9-7 is what I see this year, that O- line is bad again. They shafted Logan Mankins last year without notice and cooper is not your answer. He was god awful and never did anything for 3 years. This was all about how do we find someone to take CJ so we won’t have to pay him and be the bad team again and maybe it won’t be noticed. Who is next Grappolo, can’t wait till they offer Malcolm (CB) a bogus contract or tender him low and he leaves. Hell I would he has a ring now it’s about the cheese now. Word is that is why Jerod Mayo quit. He was sick of the crap that goes on within.

  15. If it won’t work out the right way BB will cut them in a heartbeat before the season. No reason to get excited, just yet.

The biggest splash move this offseason for the Pats is still: Scar is back!

  16. I don’t get the ‘take that, Roger!’ type comments.

The Pats got robbed of a precious 1st round pick and nothing they do can change that. Even if they traded for the 1st pick of the 1st round they’d still have to lose that one and they’d get the 29th pick back instead.

No doubt BB will package one of their two 2nd round picks in exchange for moving up in the 2nd round, but the fact remains that we have no 1st rounder.

Colts, Ravens, Goodell and the other 29 teams not named New England all still win whatever the Pats do.

Justice will be done on the field in 2016, not in the draftroom.

  17. Was hoping this would happen. My guess is it will save about $4 mil off the cap from what Chandler was going to cost this year, and will be much easier to sign next year. Really, he is only 4 years older than Chandler Jones.

  18. Good depth signing…. Chandler Jones trade looks more & more understandable & a smart business move by the Patriots organization….

  19. Not a Pats fan but I love watching them go to work in the off season. Piece by piece, they retool the team with players that fit their plans. Seems to work too! I especially like how they’re adding picks.

  20. As a Cowboys’ fan, what in the HELL are we doing? Gregory is facing a 4 games suspension, coming off a year where he missed 8 games with an injury, no sacks or production when he was on the field, and possbily, not even a fit in our 4-3 scheme.

Then you have Demarcus Lawrence who had a his best production of his short career so far, however, he is coming of back surgery which could be problematic down the road.

If you think drafting Bosa will make a overall big impact on our defense, sorry I just don’t see it.

It sad to say, but this is all coming down to Greg Hardy coming back to dallas.

They can say they were tired of his act, but the Cowboys have had ample opportunities to upgrade their pass rush, and they were just negligent in doing so.

  21. Add Chris Long subtract Chandler Jones…that is not an upgrade.
Long is not as good as Jones more injury prone and is already on the wrong side of 30.
They better use the draft pick on another DE.

You guys sure like ex Ram players.

  23. @jackwagon – you are correct. It is not an upgrade. But the upgrade that came out of this is Jabal Sheard is now a starting DE.

Sheard was outstanding until he got hurt. Then when he got back he was again their best DE and Dlineman.

One of the nerd sites (I think profootball focus) had Jabal Sheard graded out as the top DE in the league per snaps played. Barring injuries they will still hold their own.

  24. I appreciate Jones being a part of the Patriots, but let’s not act like he was Mean Joe Greene.

Chandler pretty much disappeared the second half of last season.

  25. so bill turned a very good pass rusher into an upgrade along the o-line, a good pass rusher (very good when healthy) and a late 2nd round pick…strong moves for the pats. i hate them, but you have to give respect where it’s due…this franchise makes smarts moves to keep themselves a contender every single year

  26. for you people saying “long isn’t an upgrade over jones…so it’s a bad deal” 1. you’re right, jones is better than long right now but 2. if you can’t see how this helps the team and is clearly a strong move then you should stop talking about football. they upgraded the o-line which was their only real weakness last year, added a 2nd rounder, moved sheard (who is better than jones) into a starting role while adding a quality veteran into the rotation of pass rushers. and they used jones to do all of that while he is entering a contract year and would end up leaving the team via FA next year with the pats getting nothing in return. this is a terrific move in every aspect. and based on their track record it’s pretty safe to assume the pats will turn that pick (somewhere around 60th overall) into a quality player who will probably end up starting for the team for at least the next 4 years

When you get cut by a team that wasn’t good, there must be a reason why….guess the Patriots will find out.
    ———-
Maybe the reason is the lousy team, and not the player. You’re right, however, we will find out.

It’s a win because the Pats could not afford to keep Hitower, Jones and Collins…..and they needed more depth at o-line as we saw last season. Beyond that, they got another 2nd round pick. Losing Jones will hurt, but they could not afford to keep him anyway

  29. @Dallas\Dominates:

Would you want to go to Dallas knowing Jerry Jones controls everything and has the team in a constant cap hell/state of flux like that?

If You’re Chris Long and have 2 good years left managed as a subrusher, and you want to wing a ring, do you go to the Cowboys or Pats?

    Is this really a discussion?

4 sacks in 2 years lol

I think The patriots took a chance on a player who was considered washed up…..quits on his team…..nothing left in the gas tank… and that player the very next year broke Jerry Rice’s TD in a season record…

    Randy Moss……Nice call Coach Belichick.

  32. Grandpa Brady is the clear leader of the offense, Chris can provide senior leadership on the defense. Good move BB.

  33. @ psousa1, So then Long is nothing more than a b/u plan in case Sheard gets hurt again?
Okay then, I’m convinced. Thanks for the info!

  34. “… that is why Jerod Mayo quit. He was sick of the crap that goes on within. ”

You mean, sick of playing in and winning Superbowls?

He could have easily requested a trade and played for another team, but he would rather retire a Patriot. That says something.

  35. I’d MUCH RATHER have Jones for 2016 and a Compensatory 3rd rounder than Long for 2016 and a(late)2nd Rounder.

I’m forced to agree. They get a little cap money, even after signing Long, too. Still, unless they can save Cooper, or have a crazy good hit on the pick, both long shots, this trade is hard to like. Course, nobody knows the whole story about ‘the incident’ either.

  36. @tedmuroh: you don’t get compensatory picks for trades only FA losses. That’s why MLB makes trades cause they lose 1st rds when they sign players in the off season. It would be nice.

  37. My point was, if they kept CJones for the year and then let him walk, they would have got a 3rd round compensatory next yr, instead of a 2nd rnd this yr. He’s a pass rusher, so he’s gonna get paid. But, they still would’ve had the player. The deal may work out in the long run, but it’s hard to argue the Pats are better this yr due to the trade. With the Steelers and Broncos having bad offseasons, I’m not sure it’s a great decision
