A day after he was convicted of simple assault, Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has vowed to appeal.
In a statement released by the Colts, Jackson said he does not agree with the guilty verdict on a misdemeanor charge.
“I was surprised and disappointed by yesterday’s verdict and we are planning to appeal,” Jackson said. “I sincerely believe justice will eventually prevail. Nevertheless, I sincerely regret that this case ever happened and has gotten to this point. I will continue to live my life in a way that confirms I am a good and honorable citizen.”
The Colts’ decision to release the statement on Jackson’s behalf strongly suggests that the team is standing by him and will not take any action. The NFL may suspend Jackson. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 6 and is also facing a civil suit from the victim, a pizza delivery driver who says Jackson punched him during an argument over a parking spot.
