Asiata signs new deal with Vikings

The Vikings have signed running back Matt Asiata to a new contract.

A former undrafted free agent who’s spent four seasons with the Vikings and took over as the primary back for a time in 2014 when Adrian Peterson was on the Commissioner’s exempt list, Asiata’s workload was reduced last season but he still played a role in the offense.

His nine rushing touchdowns in 2014 were tied for third most in the NFL. Asiata led the Vikings in 2014 with 164 carries, 570 yards and nine touchdowns and also was second on the team with 44 catches. Last season, he had 29 carries for 112 yards and 19 catches for 132 yards.

Asiata, 28, signed a one-year deal last March with the Vikings when he was a restricted free agent. As it stands, he’ll likely again share backup duties with Jerick McKinnon.

He is good insurance to have.

The Vikings would be better off with Asiata and McKinnon. The Vikings should have traded AP to the Titans before Murray landed there…

They weren’t lost wtihout Peterson while he was on paid leave, and it appears they completely undid the solid base from the Rookie season the Vikings had for Theodore.

I’m surprised the hoddie didn’t snatch him up, good power runner, has a nose for the end zone!
Can also contribute on special teams…

I love Asiata. He’s one of my favorite Vikings. Hard working. Productive. Exceptionale attitude. Huge team player. Glad to have you back in our Vikings family!

And the same thing was said last year. Try not to forget AP led the NFL last year…

Good to have Matt back, and can’t wait to see Metallica at US Bank in August!

Peterson, McKinnon and Asiata. Best 1,2,3 punch at RB in the league!

As a Bears fan, I hate that he went to the Vikings🙂

Used to love watching this guy play at Utah.

AP is selfish and sure he lead the league in rushing but AVG 90 or so yards a game…. aasiata and McKinnon woukd been able replace most of that productio. While the Vikings could get 2 or 3 players and AP replacement

And how many teams in the modern day win the Super Bowl with the league’s leading rusher?

Having the rushing leader usually means the team is leaning too heavily on the running game, which means they aren’t passing enough, and that takes away from the development of the QB. Moving to the future, Zimmer should take carries away from AP, and give the ball to Teddy, once he proves he can read the defense and make the appropriate throw.

He was good for 7 rushing yards per game on 1.8 carries plus 1.2 catches at 6.9 yards per catch.
His 15 yards per game were vitally important contributions to an anemic viking offense last season.

The vikes can’t afford to let that much production go and sign elsewhere. This is a great signing for the vikings keeping one of the best offensive players on the team.

Signings like this make me want Rick Spielman as the vikings GM for the next 15 years.

The Vikings have depth at RB, I just can’t understand why they gave a salary increase to a convicted child abuser when he didn’t have any leverage to ask for anything additional.

I would have at least some respect for the Vikings had they stood up to the Child Abuser and kicked him to the curb. They likely would have won as many games with the two highly skilled back ups plus beat the Seahawks because the Child Abuser wouldn’t be in the game to fumble it away in the 4th Qtr. For those Viking fans who don’t know what the term “karma” means, you just figured it out.

Every team needs some football players. Not specialists, but hard hat guys like Asiata. low ego, he’ll run over you in short yardage and run by you in the passing game. Zimmer likes football players.

Our 3rd best RB would be the Fudges 1st RB. Rich get richer.

You forgot that stats for all his blitz pickups and special teams play, and his timely catches to extend a drive or two throughout a game. Some intangibles don’t have stats, they show up when you watch a game, not look over numbers.

Asiata being a solid 3rd down back is another reason they should cut Peterson loose… AP is a 2 down back, he isn’t out there on 3rd and mediums, or the 2 minute drill.

The Vikings won’t be able to take the next step until AP is gone, he hinders a young teams growth offensively, and doesn’t have leadership qualities they can benefit from.

Also cut Fusco . He was a mistake . One of the few Speilman has made along with Wallace and Ponder.. It will open up 5 million to get Teddy another Weapon . Hopefully a Tall wide out for the redone!!
