The Vikings have signed running back Matt Asiata to a new contract.
A former undrafted free agent who’s spent four seasons with the Vikings and took over as the primary back for a time in 2014 when Adrian Peterson was on the Commissioner’s exempt list, Asiata’s workload was reduced last season but he still played a role in the offense.
His nine rushing touchdowns in 2014 were tied for third most in the NFL. Asiata led the Vikings in 2014 with 164 carries, 570 yards and nine touchdowns and also was second on the team with 44 catches. Last season, he had 29 carries for 112 yards and 19 catches for 132 yards.
Asiata, 28, signed a one-year deal last March with the Vikings when he was a restricted free agent. As it stands, he’ll likely again share backup duties with Jerick McKinnon.
