Cowboys interested in Raiders restricted free agent Benson Mayowa

The Dallas Cowboys issues at defensive end made them desperate enough to sign Greg Hardy last season. With Randy Gregory suspended for the first four games of this season, the Cowboys are again looking for help at defensive end.

According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys will host Oakland Raiders defensive end Benson Mayowa for a visit on Thursday with the hopes of signing him to an offer sheet.

Mayowa is a restricted free agent that was given a right-of-first-refusal tender by the Raiders prior to the start of free agency. If Mayowa were to sign a contract with the Cowboys, Oakland would have five days to match the deal.

Mayowa is a gifted athlete that is still developing as an NFL-caliber pass rusher. He was initially signed by the Seattle Seahawks in 2013 after going through the regional combine process when he went undrafted out of the University of Idaho. He appeared in two games with Seattle in 2013 and was claimed off waivers by Oakland at the end of training camp in 2014. Mayowa has appeared in 28 games for the Raiders over the past two seasons with 29 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Nooooo!! This is one of those guys who just keeps getting better. He’s quickly developing into a quality player, and it’d be a shame to lose him.

I’m wondering if Jack Del Rio and Ken Norton could have a positive effect on Greg Hardy or if he is too much of a knucklehead to touch at all.

Mayowa has been good in spots, but wouldn’t be a big loss. Jerry is getting desperate.

He’s a depth guy, nothing more. They’re still going to have to draft a couple guys.

It has been a long, long time since any other team has been interested in acquiring the services of an active Oakland Raider. This is progress, yes?

I can’t understand, with so many holes to fill, why we keep bringing in people for visits and there are no signings. I understand Chris Long never made it to Dallas. However they had Leon Hall in, and they had Dashon Goldson in and still nobody has signed a contract except the one guy from Philly. I know they don’t want to overpay in free agency, but you can’t afford to be penny pinching either. This team has way too many holes to fill to think they can do it all via the draft.

What?..this team doesnt have a bunch of holes to fill..its called romo got hurt..

I will never understand why Seattle gave up on him. Yes, we were seemingly flush with “LEO” pass rush specialists at the time, but it basically came down to him or Jackson Jeffcoat, who got roster churned right after that anyway.

Mayowa was a preseason wreckingball, watching him I was 100% convinced I’d be wearing his jersey the following year.I haven’t seen him do anything special in a game but the potential is there.

Ok……we shall see. I just got a gut feeling that he is looking forward to playing with Malcom Smith, Bruce Irvin, Ken Norton Jr etc….he knows the Raiders locker room…and Raiders have the cap space to match anything Dallas puts on the table….not sure if they would if it gets stupid, and with Jerry you never know.

    1. Player agent leaks to local press that they’re visiting Dallas

    2. A bunch of hype and talk heats up in the national press about player visiting

    3. Player ends up getting exactly the contract they wanted from home town team

The holes I am referring to are backup QB. Unless they think Romo can play the entire season and not get hurt again. Look at how many games he has missed in the last 3-4 seasons. A competent DE that can get to the QB. Dallas finished near the bottom of the league in sacks last year. (Nothing to do with Romos injury) A cornerback, unless they like paying over priced Brandon Carr. Dallas was near the bottom of the league in interceptions last season. (Again nothing to do with Romo getting hurt) and a second runningback to complement McFadden, unless they think McFadden can be an every down back. Don’t forget we lost Christan Michael and Lance Dunbar has visits with other teams lined up. I love the Cowboys and I bleed blue but if you think the only problem they had last season was Romo getting hurt than I must respectfully disagree with you. Other teams like Denver lost their starting QB and still managed to win games. If defense wins championships I think Dallas needs to address ours.

Kid seems like he has some talent, it would be kind of a shame to lose him but if can get a better deal with Dallas then he should take it. Gotta make the money when you can
