As a nurse in a Level 1 trauma center emergency department, I’ve really grown to hate Spring. We call it ‘trauma season,’ and it always kicks off with multiple motorcycle crashes that result in fatalities. There is nothing worse than telling a family their loved one is dead. I hope no one has to deliver that message to this kid’s family.

How many young professional athletes have had their careers and lives ruined in motorcycle accidents? I hope he can fully recover or at least be able to have a long healthy life. I sure would have liked to see a high school football team with three major future NFL players on it.

I don’t wish ill on anyone. As a former combat surgeon and current member of a transplant team the message that motorcycle riders=organ donors still doesn’t seem to be getting through. This person, this family and many others will suffer needlessly but in this country we make a choice to ride and accept consequences of that choice.
When you decide to “ride”, also decide to register with your state donor registry and designate your decision on your driver’s license then tell your loved ones. Then, enjoy your freedom and up to 8 recipient patients will thank you.
