Report: Daryl Smith will sign with Bucs

Veteran linebacker Daryl Smith will sign with the Buccaneers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday night.

Smith, 34, started every game the past three seasons for the Ravens. He had three sacks and an interception last season and has been an ironman except for an injury-shortened 2012 season, when he was limited to two games.

Smith has started 172 of 174 games in his 12-year career.

The Ravens cut Smith, probably for salary cap reasons, before the start of free agency. He played his first nine seasons with the Jaguars, who drafted him in the second round in 2004.

If he was limited to 2 games in 2012. How did he only miss 2 games in his entire career? Wouldn’t he have missed at least 14 games?

The comment was he started 172 of 174 games (he played)

Probably referring to the games in which he played, not total career games including out for injury.

You’re misreading the statement (“Smith has started 172 of 174 games in his 12-year career”). It is not stating that he has only missed 2 games in his career. Rather, it is noting that of the 174 games that he has played in he started 172 of them.

Wow letting a 30+ year old get away? Bad day for the front office.

What it probably means is that he only missed 2 games in his career in which he was on the active roster (eligible to play). The missed season must have been IR.

Best of luck to Daryl and the Bucs. Daryl did a thankless job for the Ravens (coming in after Ray left) and did it admirably. He’s lost a step in coverage, but he can still be a very productive player.
