Texans re-sign Jonathan Grimes

The Texans will have a different look at the top of their running back depth chart in 2016 with Lamar Miller replacing Arian Foster as the No. 1 back in Houston.

Beyond that change, though, the backfield group is going to look a lot like the one from the 2015 season. Alfred Blue, Akeem Hunt and Kenny Hilliard remain under contract and agent Sunny Shah announced Friday that his client Jonathan Grimes has re-signed with the team.

Grimes was set to be a restricted free agent this offseason, but the Texans opted not to tender him a contract. He would have made $1.671 million under the lowest level tender, which likely means he’ll be making less in his return to Houston.

Grimes entered the league as an undrafted rookie with the Texans and didn’t make the team out of camp, but returned later in the year after a stint with the Jets. He was waived again and spent a spell with the Jaguars before coming back to Houston again during the 2013 season. He has 116 carries for 508 yards and two touchdowns since then and will have a chance to play a reserve role again this season.
