Michael Sam “not surprised” by Hard Knocks report

Zz1mMGY1ZjYxYzgzNGM5MmVlZmIxZGQyNjdkMGZkYzhkNg== AP

The Rams reportedly struck a deal with the NFL to draft defensive end Michael Sam in exchange for a Hard Knocks dispensation. Rams coach Jeff Fisher has called that suggestion “absolutely absurd.” Michael Sam hasn’t.

I’m not surprised at all,” Sam said on Twitter in response to the tweet from Howard Balzer that the decision to draft him came in exchange for a commitment not to tap the Rams on the shoulder for the mandatory Hard Knocks assignment in 2014.

It’s unclear why Sam feels that way, and now the land rush has commenced to get Sam to elaborate on his remarks.

The NFL has yet to respond to a request for comment on the subject.

Sounds like the kind of guy who would bail out on his teammates because he doesn’t feel respected. Maybe that plays in Canada, but that kind of mentality is why you aren’t in the NFL. Keep seeing yourself as the victim, you’ll go far in life.

  2. najacoo22 says: Mar 24, 2016 10:34 AM

How does this guy always end up being a story? He can’t play NFL football. Nobody cares. Please go away.

  3. daburgher says: Mar 24, 2016 10:34 AM

I think it was very clear the NFL planned this when he was drafted.. Now we know what the Rams got in return.

  6. Seprix says: Mar 24, 2016 10:38 AM

This doesn’t make sense, because nobody would ever want to be part of the show Hard Knocks. It’s a distraction. If the Rams really wanted to have the show there, they could just ask. They’d get first dibs.

  7. Seprix says: Mar 24, 2016 10:39 AM

Oh, wait. I read this article wrong. I’m sorry everyone.

  8. celriot1 says: Mar 24, 2016 10:39 AM

Couldn’t even make it in the CFL, but wants to parlay this into an excuse as to why he didn’t make it in the NFL? Right.

  9. niners816 says: Mar 24, 2016 10:39 AM

It’s funny. The media wants to talk about a quitter, who used being gay as his way to fame and publicity, ignoring the fact that he stunk as an NFL player instead of talking about an NFL player who, you know, actually plays in the NFL. Why not talk about a 7th rounder from last year’s draft? There’s plenty of them. They made it. This dude was just a quitter, and yet you have 4 stories on this whiny quitter.

  10. watermelon1 says: Mar 24, 2016 10:40 AM

If THE MEDIA didn’t make such a big deal about him being gay, then this wouldn’t have happened.

  11. pkrjones says: Mar 24, 2016 10:40 AM

The thought of the NFL puppetmasters doing this is absolutely amazing. Why? Dipping your toes into the politically correct garbage can only lead to trouble for Goodell & the NFL, and it’s totally unnecessary. Now everyone knows that the draft is rigged and/or can be bought… another black eye!

  12. nyfootballgiants says: Mar 24, 2016 10:42 AM

Here’s the thing. If he were a good player, he would be in the league. I am not going to pretend that every team would be interested in him – but talent overcomes a lot of other concerns teams may have.

He didn’t make the Rams, was signed to the Cowboys practice squad and didn’t make an impact – went up to Canada, and walked out on his team before he was cut.

Who cares who he is attracted to? What matters is he can’t play football.

  13. doubleogator says: Mar 24, 2016 10:45 AM

Tim Tebow is a diva? I think you’re confusing being a diva with receiving unmerited media attention. I think all accounts of Tebow would be that he is a person of excellent character, but not good enough at football to be worth the media-induced distraction. Michael Sam is a quitter and a whiner, AND not good at football.

  16. bighoser says: Mar 24, 2016 10:48 AM

He couldn’t stick with Jerrah’s team either as he’s a classic tweener (too small for a DE and too slow to be a LB). Sorry, but the preseason is WAY different than the regular season as those guys Sam had success against were likely cut or buried on the bench. Not to mention he flipped his lid after landing in the CFL so that bridge is burnt too.

If the NFL wants to continue this failed affirmative action program, just stick him on the NFLN already and let him blather on with Irvin and the other idiots. Tired of hearing about this diva.

  17. toreup says: Mar 24, 2016 10:49 AM

  18. remember21 says: Mar 24, 2016 10:49 AM

Rams do a good thing and then get burned by a “report” that has no credible source attached to it.

This is the media taking advantage of a conspiratorial and purposefully uninformed public. Happens in politics, sports and every other facet of society.

Truth is irrelevant to stupid people.

People do realize that if you apply any logic to this story that it doesn’t hold up right? You’re the NFL, what do you love most of all? No, not good football silly, but money. Hard Knocks exists to get money from HBO. What would get more money from HBO, a regular old team or one that drafted the first out gay player? Also St. Louis was a good spot for Sam because it was near Missouri? Did no one look at their depth chart? Again, more money for the NFL had Sam made the team.

  25. maddenisfordorks says: Mar 24, 2016 10:56 AM

  26. ljtola says: Mar 24, 2016 11:01 AM

Even if true, who cares? Backdoor deals (unfortunate word choice, I know) happen all the time and the league for whatever PC induced reasoning felt they were going to motivate a team to draft him that’s their choice as well as the team that’s making the deal. No one forced them into it.
The bottom line as everyone else here said, if were good enough he be playing – anywhere.

The Michael Sam story seemed like a setup from the get go. It wasn’t only that he was drafted, but the ensuing coverage from media outlets who parrot NFL Network and ESPN for material took the Goodell bait hook, line, and sinker .

The summer of Sam and Manziel was the point when Goodell and Co realized that they held a firm grasp of media outlets and could sell anything that carried the NFL brand. It was the canary in the coal mine for frame-gate.

I don’t know how many stories have come out about Michael Sam?? I understand the NFL Combine isn’t everything for NFL players but he was so far behind everyone and didn’t look like he had the talent. He looked slow footed, lacked explosion and did not have fluid movement in drills other lineman excel at.

He quit when things got tough in the CFL and gave a punk out excuse yet there are still NFL stories being created about him.

  47. war71 says: Mar 24, 2016 12:11 PM

The only memorable moment of Sam for me was when he got picked, grabbed a hand full of cake and stuffed into his boyfriends mouth, then licked it back out of his boyfriends mouth on a live national sports network. Unfortunately, That will always be the first thing my mind will see when I hear or read the name Michael Sam.

Because Mike Sam is the type of guy who always thinks he’s a victim of something. Didn’t get drafted? It’s because I’m gay not because I’m not an NFL level talent. Got cut? It’s because I’m gay, not because I showed why I wasn’t drafted high. Not signed by another team? It’s because I’m gay not because 31 other teams saw my unimpressive tape. A report comes out that shows teams “had to be bribed” to draft me? Doesn’t surprise me since I’m a victim. Ugh.

While I agree it was over the top, I find it hard to believe that you would make the ” best interests of the public and kids ” comment if the entire exchange during the draft were the exact same except with a female instead of a male.

Michael Sam is a crappy football player at the NFL level, and in a perfect world his ability is all that would be relevant and it wouldn’t matter who he finds attractive, nor would it be a big deal in the media. However, the fact that people still make comments like yours illustrate exactly why being the first openly gay athlete in the NFL was relevant.

    or

‘we draft Sam only if you put us in HK.”

No team wants to submit to the nonsense that show has become, so which one is it. Also, it would have been the Sam show and no team wanted that.

Wow, some of you guys minds are warped. If anything, Sam’s decision to come out as gay was extremely brave, given that it cost him millions, and his career. The guy got dealt a bad hand in all of this. Being the SEC DPOTY means being drafted in the NFL, so it’s the teams who colluded to have this man blackballed around the league and should be blamed in all of this, not Sam. The collusion was so terrible, the NFL admin had to avoid this PR nightmare by pulling some strings. Many of you talking bad about Sam, would have the balls to do what he did and be true to himself. There’s many of your favorite NFL players who have to keep quiet about their sexuality because of the things Sam went through. It cost him millions of dollars. The fame and publicity argument for his motivation to come out is extremely idiotic. Given the pedigree of SEC DPOTY, he would of been drafted very high, and would of been paid millions if he would have kept quiet.

  69. thudspeth says: Mar 24, 2016 1:43 PM

Wow a 7th round pick was cut, big story. Chances are if he hadn’t leaped out of the closet he would not have been drafted at all.

  70. binarymath says: Mar 24, 2016 1:45 PM

Sam vs. Tebow is relevant only regarding the degree that their media entourage far exceeds their talent.

A better comparison for Sam would be Dion Jordan, another of the countless would-be pass rushers that are struggling to make it in the NFL. Jordan will keep getting looks because he has shown – however briefly – flashes of on-field capability. Sam did not.

In this QB-centric era, pass rushers are crucial and teams will leave no stone unturned to find one. What often happens is that the fast kids don’t have the size and strength required to get past OLs, or that the big, strong kids don’t have the speed to get around the OLs and get to the QB.

If the team misses with a big, strong DE, they can move him inside on third downs. If a team misses on a speed rusher, he becomes a 3-4 OLB or a former player.

And that is why Sam is not like Jackie Robinson. 42 was hand-picked by Branch Rickey because he was talented, tough, and able to channel his emotion into on-field value.

No fault of his own, but Sam has none of those Robinson traits.

  71. jackedupboonie says: Mar 24, 2016 2:05 PM

Let’s see here….He was given an opportunity that otherwise would have gone to a more deserving player, and once he applied for the job having been gifted the opportunity, he was exposed. Along the way attempting to profit by having Oprah’s crew follow him around. He quit on a Canadian team, and now is trying to make 10$ on the back end of a situation that the NFL and God dell tried to manipulate. I don’t know who looks worse.

  72. fwippel says: Mar 24, 2016 2:08 PM

Kluwe previously said that the only reason Sam wasn’t drafted until round 7 is because he’s gay. Now Kluwe has to face the hard truth that if it wasn’t for Sam being gay, he wouldn’t have been drafted at all.

Myhaws2976, I have never seen a straight man lick cake out of any orifice of a woman on live TV after being drafted in the 6th round. Not saying no football player has ever stuffed cake into his wife or girlfriends mouth, then licked it out of their mouth and off their face. I am just saying that I have never seen it. Have you?

Should Jackie Robinson’s number be un-retired and taken off all the walls in the MLB?

Yes – it should be Moses Walker’s jersey

I love how people are still making this about him being gay or that he was sec dpoy..IN COLLEGE! who cares that he’s gay…he couldn’t cut it in the NFL! He played well obviously in college and preseason, but do you know how many players play well in college and preseason and get cut!? A LOT….also, do you know how many Heisman winners…not sec dpoy…but, HEISMAN winners couldn’t even make it in the NFL and got cut!? A LOT…has NOTHING to do with being gay!! Enough with the…well, but, hey, he did this in college. Who cares, that was college, where on a GOOD team…maybe 7ish players will get drafted off of….the rest….go on and pursue other job opportunities!
