Steelers sign Steven Johnson

The Steelers visited with linebackers Spencer Paysinger and Mike Morgan recently, but neither of those players is the team’s newest addition at the position.

The Steelers announced Friday that they have signed Steven Johnson to a one-year contract. The Steelers have lost Sean Spence and Terence Garvin as free agents this offseason and Johnson is the first addition at linebacker in free agency.

Johnson made the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and played 41 games in his first three seasons with the team, including seven starts in 2014. He didn’t make the team out of camp last year and landed with the Titans on waivers. He played all 16 games for Tennessee, largely on special teams.

Spence signed with the Titans, turning the two transactions into something of a swap. The Steelers could still use more depth at the position through the draft or free agency.

You know you’re in a cap hell when sign someone that no one knows who it even is off a SB winning team.

Johnson goes from one cap hell team to another.

    Enjoy!

Well see hope he works out

He’s purely a Special Teams player to fill Garvin’s spot.

He played with the Titans last year. Reading, how does it work?

    Need defensive backfield help

Obviously, Just another added guy for depth and mostly for special teams. I still believe the steelers need to make another veteran solid signing on the defensive lineman or secondary before the season starts.

it irks me that the steelers hang on to an injured, hobbled player like spence only to send them away after they heal and become productive.

Speaking of that, tylaw, here’s s fun fact about SB winning teams:
Only one team in the history of the nfl has more SB losses than the NE Patriots*.

S.J is a fairly good player, was hoping he would return to the Broncos.

Tomlin can’t make all of the special teams tackles, so the team had to sign someone to replace Garvin. After spending a season in Tennessee with LeBeau he should come in knowing the basics for the Steeler defense, which means he’ll provide useful depth.

he will now get back to back rings. I’m feeling good about this coming year. Go Steelers

    *woot*

He immediately becomes the Steelers’ best defensive player on the AFC’s weakest D.

Johnson is a good, hard-nosed player with good instincts.
He just got buried in the depth chart in Denver. Even if he doesn’t start he is the kind of back-up that you don’t notice any level of drop off from your starter.
Good luck in Steeler town Steve!

Steelers now have Shazier, Timmons , Vince Williams, Johnson, Jordan Zumwalt (if he can ever stay healthy), and LJ Fort at ILB. Veteran Arthur Moats can also play both OLB and ILB. They don’t need more depth there. Do your homework.

The problem is that if Shazier goes down with an injury (which is likely) or if Timmons goes down with an injury, there really is nobody that can fill in a full-time role on an extended basis and play well. Sean Spence worked very well with Vince Williams in splitting time when Shazier was out last year. Johnson, Zumwalt and Fort are special teamers period. I hate to say it but I expect the first round pick to be an inside linebacker this year.

All they do is draft LBs and they never have enough.
