Report: Hoyer, Texans will split

After the Houston Texans decided to sign Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million contract, it became clear that Brian Hoyer's time in Houston was coming to end. Could he end up with either the Broncos or the Jets?

The Texans and quarterback Brian Hoyer plan to part ways, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday night.

That’s no surprise given the way last season ended and that the Texans spent big money on Brock Osweiler to become their starting quarterback earlier this month. Rapoport’s report didn’t specify if a release was imminent or if the Texans would try to trade Hoyer.

Hoyer is due to make $4 million in 2016 and be a free agent in 2017. Hoyer made nine starts for the Texans in 2015 after signing last March. The Texans won the AFC South but Hoyer was picked off four times in a 30-0 playoff loss to the Chiefs.

The pool of available quarterbacks is thin. If the 49ers keep Colin Kaepernick, the Broncos would essentially be down to free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick, Browns quarterback Josh McCown and Hoyer as potential additions after they lost Osweiler.

McCown is under contract for two more seasons at around $4 million per year but could be traded after the Browns signed Robert Griffin III last week.
