Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr did a charity appearance Wednesday, which was only newsworthy in that he’s still a member of the Cowboys.

While many expected Carr to be a salary cap casualty this offseason, Carr has remained on the roster, and said he hopes to stay that way.

“I do, unless you guys know something I don’t know,” Carr said, via Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I just prepare for whatever happens and be ready. Right now, my thought process is get my body ready, get my mind mentally ready for the grind, and just be ready for wherever action comes.”

Carr’s entering the final year of his five-year, $50.1 million contract signed in 2012, and carries a $13.8 million cap number. The expectation was that they’d cut him without a pay cut (and they still might), but Carr didn’t want to go there.

“You know I don’t like to talk about those things,” Carr said. “I’ll let that side, that situation handle itself outside the media. What I will tell you is that I just love being a Cowboy; I love being in Dallas and the community. I look forward to playing another year.”

While a veteran corner who doesn’t pick off passes might not ordinarily have leverage, the Cowboys might need to keep him. Orlando Scandrick is coming off knee surgery, and they brought back injury-plagued Morris Claiborne. They’ve also brought a parade of free agent visitors in (Leon Hall, Nolan Carroll and Patrick Robinson), but none signed and Carr remains.

How long that stays true remains to be seen. But Carr has already lasted longer this offseason that some expected.
