Chiefs extend running backs Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware

The Chiefs are hopeful that Jamaal Charles is going to be 100 percent by training camp, after tearing his ACL last year.

But they’ve made sure they’re deep in the backfield, regardless.

The team announced contract extensions for running backs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware.

“Charcandrick and Spencer both stepped in and were very effective for us offensively last year,” Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said in a statement. “These guys have different styles and abilities, and together they provide us quality depth at the running back position.”

West got the bunk of the work after Charles’ injury last year, but Ware provided a more physical complement. It’s good to have that kind of depth given any degree of uncertainty about Charles.

But it also creates a surplus, and more moves could be afoot. Jason Cole of Bleacher Report says they’re working on a trade of 2013 third-rounder Knile Davis, though they won’t get much in return for a guy who has failed to meet expectations.
