Chiefs announce coaching staff changes, elevate Andy Reid’s son

The “N” in NFL often stands for nepotism, a fact of football life for as long as ownership of franchises has passed from one generation to the next. It’s become a reality in the coaching profession, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid has joined Patriots coach Bill Belichick as the latest examples of top dogs giving one of their own pups a chance.

The Chiefs have announced that Britt Reid has been promoted to defensive line coach, after serving for three years as the assistant to Tommy Brasher. The Chiefs in turn have moved Brasher to “special projects.”

For Britt Reid, the move represents the latest positive development following a youth marred by drug abuse that ultimately resulted in jail time. In 2007, Britt Reid was sentenced to up to 23 months after pointing a handgun at the driver of a car following a dispute. Only 22 at the time, Britt Reid pleaded guilty to various charges, including carrying a firearm without a license.

The Chiefs also have elevated Al Harris to the position of secondary coach/cornerbacks, where he will work with defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas.

Corey Matthaei becomes assistant offensive line coach along with his existing job of assistant quarterbacks coach. Mark DeLeone, the assistant linebackers coach, will have an expanded role on defense.

Newcomers to the staff are offensive quality control coach Joe Bleymaier, defensive assistant Taylor Embree, sports science/conditioning coach Ryan Reynolds, assistant defensive line coach Mike Smith, and strength and conditioning assistant Devin Woodhouse.
