When the Patriots released tight end Scott Chandler with a “failed physical” designation last month, it indicated that he still hadn’t recovered from the knee injury that had nagged him last season. But it turns out that Chandler’s knee is a lot worse than anyone realized.

Chandler wrote on social media this weekend that he recently had surgery for a knee injury that will likely end his career.

“This game gives and takes. This surgery will take me out of next season, and probably keep me from playing again,” Chandler wrote.

A 2007 fourth-round pick of the Chargers, Chandler also played for the Giants, Cowboys and Bills. In his best season, 2013, he caught 53 passes for 655 yards.
