The Raiders have added Bruce Irvin at linebacker and Sean Smith at cornerback this offseason and it appears they’re not done finding ways to upgrade their defense.
It looks like Aldon Smith will be back with the team once he’s eligible to return from suspension and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that they are also scheduled to meet with one of the top safeties left on the market. Schefter reports Reggie Nelson will be in Oakland on Monday and Tuesday to speak to the team.
Nelson started every game for the Bengals the last two years and has started all but three games for them since the start of the 2011 season. He had 77 tackles and tied for the league lead with eight interceptions last season.
Nelson will turn 33 before the start of the season, which makes him a short-term option in the back end of the secondary albeit one that would be an upgrade over what’s already on hand in Oakland. Given the quiet market that’s greeted Nelson thus far, word of an agreement in the near future wouldn’t be a surprise.
