Report: Bengals, Lewis agree to contract extension

Getty Images

The Bengals and head coach Marvin Lewis have agreed to a one-year contract extension that keeps Lewis under contract through 2017, NFL Network’s Michael Silver reported Friday.

Lewis is entering his 14th season as Bengals head coach and is the NFL’s second longest tenured head coach.

The Bengals have been in the playoffs for five straight seasons but Lewis still has not won a playoff game as head coach in seven tries. Though the Bengals have suffered some personnel losses via free agency, the core of their team returns for 2016 and their contending window should very much be open, so at least in theory this extension removes a potential distraction for Lewis and the team with regard to the upcoming season.

Lewis is 112-94-2 as Bengals head coach. His teams have won four division championships.

    Commitment to slightly above average

Bwahahha. You got played by a leak.

  4. Kapodaco says: Apr 8, 2016 6:04 PM

Fun fact: Tom Coughlin was given a one-year contract extension last year, too.

    This means very little.

  5. RavenzGunnerz says: Apr 8, 2016 6:06 PM

Congrats to him. I mean, how the season ended deserve an extension.

  6. tedmurph says: Apr 8, 2016 6:06 PM

Guess that puts to bed that Mgmt is unhappy with him, but I don’t get it. Year after year the Bengals have a top 5 roster, but they can’t win a playoff game and have no team discipline. Yet, they re up the HC and QB?

  7. iamapatsfan says: Apr 8, 2016 6:06 PM

Is he a great coach? No.

Is there currently someone better out there? Probably not.

And really, a one year extensions probably comes with the caveat of “win a playoff game or you won’t be around next year regardless”

  8. dennyg2 says: Apr 8, 2016 6:06 PM

Doesn’t this blow up your story that he was on the hot seat? Another poor and untrue story. Wow. Marvin will have this job as long as he wants it.

  11. chawk12thman says: Apr 8, 2016 6:10 PM

Reality: This is so the team does not treat you like a lame duck coach, nor distracted with questions on getting an extension done moving forward…..Getting to the playoffs will not be enough and the team will need to make some sort of a run in the playoffs or Lewis will be done after the 2016 season……..

  12. terryleather says: Apr 8, 2016 6:12 PM

Great news for all the other potential AFC playoff teams!

  13. nouhoh64 says: Apr 8, 2016 6:14 PM

I like to see the commitment in our microwave society.
I’m not a Bengals ‘ fan but I hope the team can at least go to a afc championship under his watch.

  14. Seprix says: Apr 8, 2016 6:16 PM

Yeah, management does this all the time. Money is nothing to them, they make tons of it. If they didn’t sign a bigger than ‘one year’ contract, it’s just pretty much a way to avoid any distractions on whether Lewis stays or not. Either way, this is probably his final year if he can’t win a playoff game.

  15. imsorryyoufeelthatway7 says: Apr 8, 2016 6:16 PM

Well now I’m getting “frustrated” with Bengals ownership. Why not let him sit on the hot seat for a year to think about it?

  16. dawgturd says: Apr 8, 2016 6:18 PM

    Chalk12thman gets it

  17. allidoiswin55 says: Apr 8, 2016 6:22 PM

I really like the man but as a coach he just doesn’t have it. You can’t always be in contention but never win playoff games like he has done. It’s hard for me to believe another coach wouldn’t be just as successful if not more and get them over the hump. Again think he’s a great guy and great relateable coach but his job description is an outing winning and losing every year is average and you can’t keep rewarding average.

  18. hrdcorbengalsfan says: Apr 8, 2016 6:23 PM

You are all missing the point! Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis want to win a Super Bowl together. At Mike Brown’s age, what contract terms do you expect?

  19. jag1959 says: Apr 8, 2016 6:23 PM

A one year extension is hardly a ringing endorsement, in fact it comes with the implication that it could easily become a defacto severance package. While it does remove the lame duck distraction, personally I think Lewis deserved at least 2 years to take him off the hot seat.

I’m a Giants guy, Coughlin got an extension last Spring too.

    Then again, Michael Silver……….

  25. rajbais says: Apr 8, 2016 6:59 PM

Florio must be doing backflips if his body will allow him to.

After all, he’s the biggest “Marvin Lewis Must Stay” proponent on the internet when the Broncos fired John Fox and won the Super Bowl the next year.

A head coach is good based on putting players in a position to succeed. When Marvin’s is inconsistent with near highs and big-time lows, he’s not worth retaining.

  26. 3rdPlaceThreeStraightGoingOn4 says: Apr 8, 2016 7:04 PM

Steeler Nation would like to give a heartfelt warm thank you to Mike Brown.

The Steelers are 15-3 in Paul Brown stadium.

Bungle fans – “Daddy, is that you?”
Steelers – “Yes son, we own you.”

  27. chargerdillon says: Apr 8, 2016 7:11 PM

If there’s anything Marvin Lewis has demonstrated, he cannot lead a team when the stress mounts.

Last year with everything in their hands they mentally imploded.

Marvin allowed the clowns to be clowns. End result is the same it’s been every years. FAILURE

  28. realtruthteller100 says: Apr 8, 2016 7:16 PM

Fourteen years is a long time to stick with a coach.
Lewis’ lack of playoff success doesn’t help things.
Of course, his regular season record isn’t so bad.
Rebuilding from scratch would be tough for the fans.
I think they should have promoted Hue Jackson.
Offensively, he did a great job last year.

It might be time for Marvin to step away after the season.
So hopefully he’ll be motivated to lead them to a super bowl.

He’ll have a mixed legacy if this is it.
In the playoffs, he didn’t do much.
The fact that they got there is impressive, though.
Let’s see the next coach try to even match that.
Even well renowned coaches have worse regular season records.
Really will be an interesting season.

  29. knockknockwhosthereowen says: Apr 8, 2016 7:30 PM

I just like to take these Cincinnati articles and comment that it’s been 25 YEARS since your last playoff win. There are fans who are 25 who haven’t seen a playoff win. Just let that sink in.

  30. smitty113 says: Apr 8, 2016 7:35 PM

Compromising Polaroids of ownership is my only explanation after 13 years of nothing. Reminds me of the tenures of Denny Green and Jeff Fisher.

No we’re not missing the point, At his age and with Marvin Lewis it’s not the contract terms, it’s that Mike Brown is satisfied with just making money and not really caring about winning.

  32. laxer37 says: Apr 8, 2016 7:50 PM

Four AFC North Championships + zero playoff wins = contract extension.

The bar of success in Cincinnati is firmly set at just making a brief playoff appearance.

  33. myhawks1976 says: Apr 8, 2016 8:04 PM

One year contracts don’t mean a coach is off the hot seat. It’s quite the opposite. This extension PROVES what Florio and other said about Lewis on the hot seat. If you have a coach you are one hundred percent sold on and convinced of, you lock up 4 or 5 years.

This extension was meant to avoid what SF went through a couple years ago with Harbaugh and what Colts went through last year with Pagano. When you have a coach coaching his last year of a deal, it overshadows the team and becomes a huge distraction. Giving a coach a ONE year buffer, is basically putting them on as hot of a seat as you can.

  34. gojags says: Apr 8, 2016 8:13 PM

Bengals’ Fan – Marvin will be your coach until Marvin dies. Until Marvin dies the Bengals will win ZERO playoff games. And Marvin will live for 100 years.

  35. forshameforshameforshame says: Apr 8, 2016 8:22 PM

Wow, such high standards and expectations. In Denver, John Fox got canned after going, 46-18, 4 straight AFC West Crowns, a Super Bowl appearance and more. In Cincy? All Lewis has to do is show up. He has a lifetime gig. Do what you’ve always done, get what you’ve always got.

Best shape ever? The bengals played in a SB…..they have not even won a playoff game in 25 years. How do you consider this their “best shape ever”?

  37. NinersRule says: Apr 8, 2016 8:43 PM

Looks like Mike Brown will NEVER get those incriminating pics from Lewis.

  40. yyc2phx says: Apr 8, 2016 9:23 PM

Look at the turnaround Zim has done with Vikings and BA has done with Cards in such a short time… Lewis has had enough time and done very little… Game film don’t lie!!

  41. stew48 says: Apr 8, 2016 9:23 PM

I don’t think this is the first one year extension; they both seem to like it that way.

When you consider that since 2001, the AFC North has four SB wins and a second. Do you register that means it is a tough division? He has done well, just too bad a very good player also is a criminal mine type. And, yes, I do think he should be gone, like the wind!

  42. jimlahey916 says: Apr 8, 2016 10:59 PM

25 years and counting without tasting a single playoff win. #gosteelers #bungles

  44. mrjdon says: Apr 9, 2016 1:59 AM

A lot of these comments are way off.
This extension doesn’t show that the team is happy with him.

If the team was really happy with him, they would have given him an extension of MORE THAN JUST ONE YEAR.

    Pay attention, people!!!

  45. nbooat says: Apr 9, 2016 3:57 AM

The Bengals fans are a lot happier on Sunday night than most fan bases…Every team’s season ends with a loss except one…Most people are (or should be) jealous of the Bengals success on a weekly basis…Alot of fans are hating because they have to endure a miserable season with losing records and crushing defeats…Bengals fans are enjoying the football regular season with win after win! How many fans can say their team has made it to the playoffs 6 of the last 7 years…Making playoffs = winning 16 week regular season…I’m glad I’m a Bengals fan!

  46. navyvike says: Apr 9, 2016 4:53 AM

Eight times the charm? (Playoffs). I’m needless to say a Vike fan and his tenure “nowadays” is phenomenal and I love it when an org keeps good coaching and mtg more than 2 yrs in the NFL lol.

He’s due. His personnel needs to step up and of course health comes to play but they need to produce in the “second season” .

He doesn’t block, tackle or throw the football. He’s surrounded himself with a very good staff and player talent and has performed greatly IMO.

He is or I should say the Bengals are on the cusp and should break through the playoff humdrum. Bengal fans, keep your chin up, it’s going to happen.

  47. woogie42 says: Apr 9, 2016 8:14 AM

But, but, but didn’t Florio just write that ownership is inpatient with Lewis?

  48. urbusted2 says: Apr 9, 2016 8:40 AM

The one year contract is the last he’ll see with the Bengals if they under-perform in the post season this year (should they get there).

  49. TheDPR says: Apr 9, 2016 8:58 AM

Win a playoff game? I’m thinking they don’t even make the playoffs this year. They’ve lost a lot this offseason and they didn’t have a great margin within the division as it was. Third place. Seven wins. Lewis is done, extension or not.

  50. rutchaser says: Apr 9, 2016 11:55 AM

Most teams the one year extension may not mean much. With Mike Brown it does. He will not pay him to go away next year so he will be the coach. I don’t get it. Pacman cost them a game and they give him a huge reward. Marvin cannot win big games and keeps getting rewarded. Fellow Bengals fans, stop buying tickets and jerseys, hats, shirts etc. As long as Mike Brown is making money, nothing will change. How can some of you be OK with not winning a playoff game in 25 years? 25 years!!!!

  51. johnc44 says: Apr 9, 2016 12:21 PM

This has been the deal between Lewis and Brown for years.Lewis has signed a 1 year extension for 6-7 seasons in a row. It`s always been offered right after the season he just got around to signing it.
2 years ago he didn`t sign it until well into training camp.
