Report: DeMarcus Lawrence facing four-game suspension

Getty Images

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said this week that improving the team’s pass rush is a draft priority, something that didn’t come as much of a surprise given the current makeup of their defensive front.

The need may be even more urgent than we thought, however.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence is facing a four-game suspension for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Per the report, Lawrence is appealing the suspension — no penalties are announced until the appeal process has concluded — but that “all indications” are that the penalty will remain in place.

If that is the case, Lawrence would join Randy Gregory on the suspended list for the first four games of the season and the Cowboys will be skeletally thin on the edges of the defensive line. They can address that shortcoming with the fourth pick of the draft, although they will probably explore other options as well because their need for help on that front likely goes beyond what one rookie can provide.

With the 4th pick the Cowboys take Joey Bosa.

Da’ boys, the gift that keeps on giving. NFC East teams gotta be lovin’ it and laughing at how Jerrah keeps picking ’em.

  4. bhindenemylines says: Apr 20, 2016 4:45 PM

    Well, that seals it.

With the top 2 QBs gone and half the Dline suspended for the first 4 games…

“Welcome to Dallas, Mr. Bosa. Can I take your bags for you?”

Omg this makes me sick to my stomach. Literally! How can you be so stupid? Ughhh

  8. axesbluestar says: Apr 20, 2016 4:57 PM

CAN’T take Bosa – dude loves to party with Ecstasy. He’ll be suspended before the season starts.

  9. thenarrowways says: Apr 20, 2016 4:59 PM

Greg Hardy doesn’t sound too bad now.

  10. icebowler says: Apr 20, 2016 5:00 PM

Maybe they’ll have to offer Greg Hardy a four game contract.

  11. daysend564 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:00 PM

Greg Hardy it is Stephen Jones on line 1

  12. One_Time_At_Band_Camp says: Apr 20, 2016 5:02 PM

he’s just another great leader type for Jerrah

  13. rajbais says: Apr 20, 2016 5:03 PM

Someone’s been around Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory too much!

  14. mackcarrington says: Apr 20, 2016 5:05 PM

These guys know exactly when they’ll get tested, yet he’s obviously failed 3 other times to reach the point of suspension. Incredible!

  15. jag1959 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:06 PM

And of course when he does get suspended the word will be that it’s weed. Ever notice how it’s always weed? Per the CBA the league can’t say what the substance was and nobody gets overly ticked off about weed, so of course it’s always weed. Sure it is…

  16. da1804 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:07 PM

Are you sure you want Joey BOSA? He was suspended at Ohio State last season for the same thing.

  17. eazeback says: Apr 20, 2016 5:08 PM

that’s gonna mess our draft all up! DO NOT TAKE BOSA jerry take ramsey! don’t sweat the 1st 4 games, build for the future, lets put together a scary secondary

  18. chrisdmv says: Apr 20, 2016 5:09 PM

Damn I can’t believe this idiot just ruined my high on 4/20.. I am pissed. I was just excited about the Philly trade and happy that we will now def get Jalen Ramsey and now this??

  19. txrawdog says: Apr 20, 2016 5:10 PM

Thats what happens when Greg Hardy is their mentors.

  20. chrisdmv says: Apr 20, 2016 5:10 PM

Cowboys should still draft Jalen Ramsey

Say no to Bosa. He will get suspended too. He party a lot and is known for drug use as well. Most will not agree with me on this but I think the Cowboys should give Greg Hardy a 1 year prove it contract. He will play hard and act right cause now he knows no team wants him and he have to prove to the NFL he is not what people think he is by playing great this year to get interest from teams next year. Cut him week after week 4 if he act up since the suspended clowns will be back then. Also pick draft a DE in the second and pick a Vet. Most vets will get cut because this draft is loaded with pass rushers and its deep with them

  21. redfield11 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:16 PM

Really wanted Ramsey over Bosa but these idiots aren’t making it easy

  22. thejuddstir says: Apr 20, 2016 5:23 PM

Where does Jerrah keep finding all these team leaders?

  23. thejuddstir says: Apr 20, 2016 5:23 PM

Where does Jerrah keep finding all these team leaders?

  24. kcchefs58 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:35 PM

    Cowboys on line 1!!!!!!

  25. robmix8 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:37 PM

@chrisdmv I like most of what youre saying but the problem hardy thinks hes a victim and feels hes done nothing wrong and doesn’t have to prove anything

  26. jkennedy1970 says: Apr 20, 2016 5:39 PM

Stay on course and take Ramsey at 4 if he’s available and take a chance on E. Kentucky DL Noah Spence with the 34th pick.

  27. arwiv says: Apr 20, 2016 6:03 PM

Spence will be gone by boys 2nd pick. Still have to take ramsey at 4…even with this stupid suspension.

  28. billybmore says: Apr 20, 2016 6:22 PM

I have been a Cowboys fan for 38 years and I am getting so sick of these low character players this team keeps drafting/signing. I am done defending them. They are what they are and they get what they deserve. I won’t spend another dime on this team until they clean this dumpster fire of horrible people they keep aquiring up. Tired of this garbage.

  29. vdub6146 says: Apr 20, 2016 6:31 PM

    geez…..how stupid can you be

  30. dtroxallday says: Apr 20, 2016 6:44 PM

Wasn’t last year Hardy’ “show me what you got” year? He’s already used up that one.

  31. gbrooks88 says: Apr 20, 2016 7:01 PM

This the reason Stephen A Smith call this team a accident waiting to happen they just can’t seems to get out they own way.Come on you get paid Millions of Dollars to play a game yet you can’t stay off weed wow what about the promise you made to the fans who pay your salary , your family and your teammates are you so selfish that you can’t stay clean. this team will never when again until you get a real head coach and a GM who will bring the fear of God to this team,I’m a shame to call myself a Cowboy fan, just unreal

  32. platinumraider32 says: Apr 20, 2016 7:21 PM

Wait just a dog gone minute. Wasn’t last season Randy Gregory’s rookie year??? And he’s suspended already? and now Lawrence???

I use to think Stephen A. just had an ax to grind with Dallas but now it’s more and more like he know’s exactly what he’s talking about when it comes to this team.

3 starters from the D Line already gone and training camp hasn’t even started yet.

    Good God Dallas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. thegenghiskahn88 says: Apr 20, 2016 8:03 PM

Nope. Bosa parties way too much and will get suspended in Dallas..

    We’ll take Ramsey.

This makes my head hurt smh.

  34. theheyseed says: Apr 20, 2016 8:43 PM

and the Redskins win the NFC east again.

  35. ctiggs says: Apr 20, 2016 8:46 PM

Leadership at its finest, am I right Jerrah?

  36. rcali says: Apr 20, 2016 10:17 PM

    The Curse of 420!

  37. maverick2560 says: Apr 20, 2016 11:12 PM

The problem is Jerry. He takes chances on players like
Hardy, McClain and then tells the coaching staff to utilize them.
This puts pressure on the head coach who consistently
talks about bringing in the ” right people “.
When you empower an employee it can cause problems if the player
decides to do what he feels is best for him not neccesarily the team.
Then you take chances on young players in the draft.
Lawrence and Gregory had not so good backgrounds in avoiding situations or an inability to avoid use of social crutches
    ( marijuana ) . Add into the position room Mr.Greg Hardy …
and you have here …a situation ..which is not good.
Putting Hardy in the position room was like dropping a bomb.
Here you have Gregory and Lawrence looking to Hardy as their leader.
Not good. Sometimes an owner should listen to his coach instead
of dropping bombs in his locker room.

    Jerry Jones….SUPER Genius!!

  39. jsrdc says: Apr 20, 2016 11:50 PM

Haters, take a breath, take two weeks off, and then quit.

This was probably for Mary Jane, and he is appealing it anyway. The NFL rule for the naturally occurring weed with MULTIPLE benefits is ridiculous and needs to be changed.

Dallas won’t change their draft because of a guy missing 4 games. Jason Jones may be brought back to be an interim DE, and then turns into depth starting game 5. Ryan Russell and Benson Mayowa now get to audition, and both are young and strong.

Will Dallas light up the sacks category the first 4 weeks? Very likely no, but they haven’t done that for several years, and were still 12-4 in 2014 with a strong running game and dominant O-line. They will have the same in 2016.

Like I said, ease up haters. Like flies to $%&#, you are all over anything Cowboys.

  40. jsrdc says: Apr 21, 2016 12:18 AM

    @theheyseed,

“and the Redskins win the NFC east again.”

Now that is the funniest thing I heard all day. Thanks for the humor, bro.

The (toilet) paper NFC East Champs from last year will be lucky to break the 8 wins mark in 2016. Their D is ancient, their O-line wasn’t even ranked top 10. Now with Morris defecting to a division rival, the running game is also very suspect.

Cousins had a nice year, but he can’t do it alone, and he won’t. A flash in the pan season for the 4skins in 2015.

  41. catquick says: Apr 21, 2016 1:35 AM

Why fight it? You either did it or didn’t. I would think the proof is positive.

  42. metalup666 says: Apr 21, 2016 8:32 AM

Hey we didn’t see the never, ever used term “dumpster fire” at all in this thread….oh wait…

  43. billco6192012 says: Apr 21, 2016 9:23 AM

ITS LIKE AL DAVIS IS STARRING BACK AT JERRAH IN THE MIRROR.LETS TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE.FIRST YOU GET RID OF D,WARE THEN MURRAY WHO HAD THE BEST RUSHING SEASON SINCE EMMIT SMITH AND LETS NOT FORGET HOW YOU LET THE OFFENCE LINE COACH GO TO WASHINGTON AFTER MURRAY LEFT.IM A NY GIANT FAN AND UNLESS DALLAS HIRES A GM ITS NOT GOING TO GET BETTER.MARK MY WORDS JERRAH WILL TAKE IT OUT ON GARRETT AFTER THIS SEASON AND FIRE HIM AS A SCAPE GOAT.AT LEAST ITS FUN TO WATCH.

    The Cowboy way.

  45. thebirdofprey says: Apr 21, 2016 11:39 AM

Why did the NFL give this team 5 prime time games? I love football but those Cowboy games last year were terrible to watch.
