Report: Manziel indicted on misdemeanor assault charge

Getty Images

Johnny Manziel officially has one more hurdle to overcome before getting back to the NFL, if he decides that he wants to get back to the NFL.

According to KRLD-AM in Dallas, sources in in the Dallas County District Attorney’s office say that Manziel has been indicted on a charge of misdemeanor assault with bodily injury.

The incident occurred in late January between Manziel and his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.

The indictment occurred even though, per KRLD-AM, a settlement has been reached between Manziel and Crowley. Typically, a civil settlement in cases involving potential criminal charges will result, directly or indirectly, in a short-circuiting of the criminal case.

It’s unknown whether Crowley testified before the grand jury. It’s possible that the evidence was strong enough to indict Manziel without her testimony. The real question would then be whether a conviction can be obtained without her testimony.

It’s a misdemeanor charge, big deal for nothing, a fine and anger management class. Over and done, very simple, very easy!! Just another waste of taxpayers money!!

You have a hard time believing a guy that has a propensity to indulge himself with ‘so much on the line’ would be reckless?? He is practically the poster boy for reckless self indulgence.
Maybe some court ordered rehab will help him see the light but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Not saying what Johnny did was OK, but this is obviously a human being with some very destructive issues. It’s easy to laugh and point – I’m hoping he can improve the way he treats others and himself.

The Clowns. They pass on Roethlisberger back in ’04, who was begging to play for Cleveland — and thereby allow their arch-rivals to nab the future HOF’er just 5 picks later.

The Clowns determined that Kellen Winslow, II was a better risk — the same K2 that trashed his career doing stunts as a complete novice on a high performance bike in a parking lot.

    Genius.

This sends them into a QB tailspin they have still yet to come out of, forcing them to draft Johnny Snow Blower in a Wife Beater with a First Round Pick.

According to their criminally charged owner, this was reportedly at the direction of a homeless person’s ramblings.

You can’t make this stuff up folks.

So Snow Blower signs a fat contract, and then goes on an “Affluenza” fueled TEN MONTH “bender” chock full of boozing, beating women, rolling currency in bathroom stalls, tweeting, tooting, vandalizing, sleeping through mandatory practices and team functions, and basically just playing the fool – while continuing to play the Browns as chumps.

Unreal. This was once a proud franchise, … back during the Eisenhower Administration.

First, I do hope the guy wakes up and gets some help. I’d even like to see him get another crack at the NFL, but only IF he gets clean and stays clean.

Second, I’m amazed that so many people still defend him; and in this case blame it on the girl. Must be a lot of PFT fans paying alimony/child support.

Blame it on the “mainstream media”? Craaaazy; but some people will believe in old thing. Presidential primaries have proven that in spades this year.

You do something bad, you can settle civilly but still face charges if the public saw that stuff going down. It’s not all like OJ, where you settle the criminal stuff and then work on the civil stuff. Sometimes it goes the other direction. A civil settlement has nothing to do with the criminal side.

  35. mborz says: Apr 25, 2016 12:16 AM

Nothing big will happen. Not even jail time. Probation and a anger management class followed by a alcohol abuse class. Huge fine! That’s it. It’s going to be very difficult getting back into the NFL though.

I thank God every day that my Vikings took Teddy Bridgewater instead of Manziel in the draft. Manziel was a head case in college, and nothing has changed for him since then. He’s a walking disaster. No NFL team in their right mind should touch this clown with a ten foot pole. He’s a danger to himself and others.

Now that the court case is settled, I want to see the NFL punishment doled out. If the Ray Rice situation is the reference point, it will be 4 games. Then the next logical question is, “Who wants to sign Johnny 8-ball to be a back up QB with a looming 4 game suspension?”

Answer; Nobody, not even the Vikings.

It’s a shame, really. Not with respect to him, who really cares about him outside a select few family members and friends. It’s a shame that we fans have to read about him on a regular basis now.

He’s out of the NFL and likely won’t get back in and his life will be chronicled on its downhill spiral until its seemingly inevitable early end in some “tragic” way. Then we move on to the next guy.

  54. joeconnorjr says: Apr 25, 2016 8:26 AM

The real question would then be whether a conviction can be obtained without her testimony.

    ————

I have to disagree with Mike for these reasons:

    1. If the DA wants her testimony at trial, he can get it. If she won’t appear voluntarily, he can issue a trial subpoena, sign a material-witness complaint or, if she is out of state, secure her presence via the Uniform Act to Secure the Attendance of Witnesses;

    2. I would be shocked if the DA has not already locked Crowley into a story, preferably under oath. That’s Criminal Investigations 101. If she is locked in to a sworn version of events, she might have a hard time exonerating Manziel at trial without getting charged with perjury.

To those who say a misdemeanor is no big deal, think again. Given the current environment, a conviction might very well make Manziel even more radioactive to the League than he already is.

    ==================================

So, of all the things to thank the entity in the skies for, you thank Him for something your team had no control over? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Clowns selected first and took Manziel ont he advice of a homeless guy, so your Vikes didn’t get the choice between Manziel or Bridewater.

  66. sailbum7 says: Apr 26, 2016 9:18 AM

It seems that he is intent on self destruction. Most would think that the NFL would not want Manziel back with his history and problems, but since they took back Vick I imagine they would take back anyone if they have talent on the field. The only question is if any team thinks his talent on the field is worth taking on the risks of what he might do off the field. I think he will eventually find his way back onto an NFL team. The only thing I wonder is if it might take a stint in the CFL to get him there. It may take proving his talent on the field by playing a season or two in the CFL before an NFL team decides he is worth the risks.
