Broncos jump up to grab Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch

The Broncos needed a QB and got Lynch before the Cowboys could creep back into the first round.

The Denver Broncos seem to have moved on from the idea of Colin Kaepernick.

Denver moved up five spots in the draft in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks to select Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch with the 26th overall pick in the first round.

With trade talks stalling with the San Francisco 49ers over Kaepernick, the Broncos began to look elsewhere for potential quarterback solutions in the wake of Peyton Manning’s retirement.

The Seahawks picked up a third-round pick, No. 94 overall, from Denver to slide back five selections to the 31st and final pick of the first round.

With Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian the only quarterback currently on the roster, the Broncos had to be aggressive when Lynch and Connor Cook remained on the board late in the first round. Teams such as Dallas and Cleveland held early second round picks and could have been looking into similar trades to get the quarterback they needed as well.
