Bill Belichick skeptical of Tom Brady in lacrosse: “He can’t run”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick doesn’t open up about too many topics, but get him talking about lacrosse, and he can go on and on.

Belichick did a video interview with Lacrosse Magazine, and other than his clear comfort with the game itself (he played at Weslyan University and his daughter coaches at Holy Cross), he’s also given some thought as to how his own players would translate.

While Brady is third on the all-time touchdown pass list, Belichick doesn’t think much of his offensive ability if he had to change sports.

“Put him in the goal,” Belichick said, via Boston.com. “He can’t run. I mean, he can’t run. He can’t dodge.”

Perhaps other players might have more success, such as tight end Rob Gronkowski.

“If I could teach him any stick work, I would put him at crease attack,” Belichick said. “Let him go out, clear out, and just let him go to the goal.”

(We’ll now pause while Gronkowski giggles to himself Beavis-style about “stick work” while wondering if he’d be allowed to wear uniform number 69 in lacrosse.)

Belichick also said he thought wide receiver Julian Edelman would make a “good midfielder,” but downplayed his own ability to continue to coach the sport.

“The game’s kind of passed me up a bit,” Belichick said. “I wouldn’t be naive enough to think that I would be able to keep up with all that.”

He also referenced limiting substitutions, which is interesting because his own defenses are an exercise in specialization. But mostly, it was just interesting to see him at length about something he’s clearly passionate about, since he seldom shows that side.

  1. Can the air pressure be adjusted in a lacrosse ball? What benefits would Brady have with having the other teams practice videos?

  2. “But mostly, it was just interesting to see him at length about something he’s clearly passionate about, since he seldom shows that side.”

    ===================================

Not true at all, it just doesn’t generate internet clicks so it is rarely reported on. I believe Mike Reiss has posted several articles about BB’s press conferences where he will give a history lesson on many Football related subjects. (Such as the evolution of the fullback in the NFL.) But in-season the media will continually ask him questions they know he won’t answer so they can report how he is “prickly” and “stand-off-ish”. However, in NE you see more of this side of his personality.

  3. His name is too simple for lacrosse. If Brady really wanted to play, he should change it to something along the lines of Hamilton Bandersnatch.

To clarify, to say “he seldom shows that side” is probably true but it is partly (mostly) because he is rarely engaged this way by reporters, (i.e. in a casual conversation about a topic not directly associated with his job.)

  5. “But mostly, it was just interesting to see him at length about something he’s clearly passionate about, since he seldom shows that side.”

    ^^^

This is one of those things I can never understand about the sports media. Why don’t you try to have an original thought for once? For years and years and years people have trumpeted that Belichick never talks about anything. That is complete garbage. When people ask him legitimate questions, he often goes on and on and on about the history of football, and why he focuses attention on certain details more than others, and stuff like that. But when you media people ask him completely stupid questions, you prove to him that he is wasting his time, and he just shuts you all down. Ask him why he prefers to have a left footed punter and you’ll get a 20 minute answer. But, for example, when he says “we’re on to Cincinnati”, you might as well stop asking him about Kansas City, right? And if you continue to ask him about Kansas City, that isn’t Belichick stonewalling you, that is you being a dumbass asking him to answer a question about something he isn’t going to discuss.

  6. I wonder if this is why Hogan got such a great contract from him, he was a D1 lax player!!!

I’d LOVE to play “Bill” in lacrosse. Love it.

    —————————————————-
PFFT………..Bill’s stuck it to the Jets so many times already.

  8. How DARE he trash Brady????? To say that he could not do anything is pure heresy!!!! The GOAT could do anything in sports; basketball, football, baseball!!!! He shoots a 55 in golf, a 300 average in bowling, is undefeated in Texas Hold’em. There is nothing he is not perfect at.

  9. You can make the case that either Joe Montana or Tom Brady is the GOAT, it’s impossible to compare eras but even the most ardent Brady fan would have to admit he can’t run.

  10. When, if ever are the posters going to learn that cheating, air pressure and video comments are old, lame, certainly not original and just a product of the non-creative? I’ll answer my own question…….never. It’s lazy and easy. God forbid any real thinking and wit be used.

  11. Well, I finally found something to like about Belichick. I have been involved in the Lacrosse world for over 40 years and played D1 Top 10, Pro, for the US World Team and Coached at the Naval Academy. Ironically, he conjures up what positions guys should/would play; when in fact he makes no mention of a real true Stud on his Team. Chris Hogan was a very good player at Penn State.

  12. Why does ever article about the Pats have clowns either boasting how great they are or bringing up allegations of cheating?
Is it possible to stay on topic?
Yeah, I didn’t think so. I’ll give myself a thumbs down on this one.

  13. Meanwhile:

NASA has confirmed that the 29 satellites in geosynchronous orbit above every NFL stadium except for Gillette have been updated with the new PlantThought module. This module will allow Coach B to insert any thought of his choosing into the mind of any opponent.

When asked about how he intends to use the module Coach B replied, “We’re working on it. We’ll see how it goes.”

  15. Brady beat Urlacher one on one in the open field. Not that that means anything . . . just saying. Probably one of Urlacher’s most embarrassing moments. Still, Brady is the GOAT.

  16. For all you basement dwellers who probably had to cheat to get through high school..the Patriots NEVER taped another teams practice…never happened ever..and the only one who ever deflated footballs was Mother Nature so please go after her and stop with your unsubstantiated lies…

Reason #3,657 why it’s good to be a Giants fan, we are immune to Brady and Belichick related tantrums and can just enjoy watching 2 of the greatest of all time do what they do objectively.

She likes to cry a lot about Luck’s ribs too.

  21. I hope that Tom Brady doesn’t think he can switch to lacrosse at his age. Do they even have teams for people his age? When is the lacrosse season, can he still play football too? I wonder if he has a clause in his contract about not playing lacrosse. Is there a quarterback in lacrosse? Is he required to run more than NFL quarterbacks are typically expected to? How many points do you get for touchdowns in lacrosse? Why doesn’t my cable package include Monday Night Lacrosse?

Thank you for being accurate. I hardly ever comment on a Patriots thread. There was one today on Gronk, never posted. I hardly ever post anymore on any Patriots thread. I use to rip you guys, but I stopped that quite some time ago. I know you guys are good, end of story.

You’re welcome. I don’t like seeing anyone get bashed when they don’t deserve it (and there are plenty that do deserve it).

I recall having a somewhat lengthy discussion with you on a thread that turned into being more about what it is to be a fan of a team through good times and bad than the content of the article itself….this was during the aftermath of the deflategate game. I had a different screen name at the time – one which the posts of seldom get through – so I changed to this one.

Anyway I have noticed that for quite a while you have, for the most part, avoided commenting on Patriots articles, and therefore didn’t deserve the bashing here.

  26. I love all the idiots calling the Patriots cheaters and trying to get a rise out of people! To me it means that Bill and the fellas are doing something right, I mean he’s obviously in everyone’s head. They hate the Patriots so much that they spend all their time on the Patriots related posts. Lol! All their teams pick up our trash, they try to get our leftovers. You know your team is great when they have to fabricate a scandal to give everyone else an advantage!

Somehow I think you’d be the one laying in a puddle of your own tears.

That’s right – a 64 year old man would physically dominate you.

  28. I played lacrosse in college for a couple of years.
It really is a fun and challenging sport.
I’ve always wondered why the sport never became
    more popular. Very competitive.

Never knew Belichick was also passionate about it.
I’m sure he enjoys the mental and strategic
aspects of the game a lot more.
Now this Steelers fan has some new-found respect
for the Hoodie. Good for him for not being singularly
    focused on football alone.

  29. I can’t believe how lame all of you are you search DAY AND NIGHT NIGHT AND DAY in search for an article about the best quarterback and Coach ever to touch the Gridiron Brady and Belichick respectively in case you morons don’t know what that means it’s the order I refered to them previously I obviously didnt have to say there names……since all you haters have such a huge CRUSH ON BOTH OF THEM, there you go. Its truly amazing how BAD YOUR TEAMS SUCK you cannot find anything written about them you have to post on an article like this i almost feel bad for you aaaaaah NO I DONT!!!! so good luck in your battle for BASEMENT RATS!!!!!!!! TO ALL OF YOU IN PATRIOT NATION,GO PATS!!!!!!
