Bucs rookie involved in strange shooting was already on probation

Buccaneers undrafted rookie Dominique Robertson was described as a “victim” and a “bystander” after he was shot last week in California, but he was on probation for an incident from his college days in which he was anything but.

According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Robertson was on two years’ probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of an officer and misdemeanor simple assault, from a January 2015 incident when he was playing at the University of West Georgia.

He was initially charged with a felony count of obstruction and misdemeanor counts of assault and battery. Those charges stemmed from an incident at his apartment complex, when cops tried to disperse a crowd after a fight and he refused to leave. According to the police report, he threatened one officer, and then ran from the scene. When another officer eventually found him trying to enter his apartment, he “shoved the officer against the wall with his back,” and the officer suffered a torn leg tendon and had to be hospitalized.

In and of itself, that’s not that unusual. But nothing about Robertson’s case has been ordinary.

He was hospitalized last week after being shot twice. The initial report said he was shot in the leg, though the Riverside County sheriff’s office said his injuries were to his “back, buttock and legs.” Robertson didn’t call 911 (as one might, when shot twice), and was hospitalized in Loma Linda, which is not in Riverside County. San Bernardino County officials went to the place he said he was shot, but found no evidence of a crime scene or witnesses who heard gunshots.

Robertson is the nephew of Bucs offensive line coach George Warhop.

It’s unclear if he’ll be sufficiently healed from his injuries to participate in training camp, but very little about this case has been clear thus far.
