Former NFL wide receiver Davone Bess was in court Tuesday to enter a not guilty plea in Maricopa County Superior Court on a charge of unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle.
Police in Gilbert, Arizona wanted to stop Bess late on June 19 after seeing him driving without his headlights on, but, per court documents via the Arizona Republic, when Bess did stop he also “began to simulate a gun with his hand and pretended to fire at the officer.” Bess then fled the scene and police went to his home where they found him still in the car and holding a knife.
Bess ignored police and went into his house and was eventually taken into custody at 4:45 a.m. on June 20 after police obtained a warrant to enter the house. Bess was indicted on June 28.
Bess last played for the Browns in 2013 and was previously arrested for battery on a police officer when he played for the Dolphins. He’s due in court again on August 16.
