Eric Fisher gets $28.5 million fully guaranteed by March

Getty Images

Three years ago, the Chiefs thought enough of tackle Eric Fisher to make him the first pick in the draft. Now, they think enough of him to give him a four-year, $48 million extension.

Per a source with knowledge of the contract, $22 million is fully guaranteed at signing. By March 2017, $28.5 million will be fully guaranteed. There are another $11.5 million in injury-only guarantees.

The contract compares favorably to the market, which is a positive sign for Fisher given that he has yet to fully become the guy the Chiefs thought he would be. (Apparently, they think he’s close to becoming that guy.)

By way of comparison on a “new money” basis, Saints tackle Terron Armstead and Eagles tackle Lane Johnson got $20.8 million fully guaranteed at signing, and less than $28.5 million by the following March. Their total guarantees were $38 million and $35 million, respectively; Fisher’s is at $40 million.

(Bills tackle Cordy Glenn actually did better than all three, with $26.5 million fully guaranteed at signing and $31.5 million fully guaranteed by March 2016.)

Currently, the deal ties Fisher with Glenn as the fourth highest-paid tackle in the league, at $12 million per year. Washington tackle Trent Williams gets $13 million per year, Armstead gets $13 million per year, Cowboys tackle Tyron Smith gets $12.2 million per year.

Behind Fisher are Browns tackle Joe Thomas at $11.5 million per year, Johnson at $11.25 million per year, and Colts tackle Anthony Castonzo at $10.9 million per year.

The extension, added with the balance of his rookie contract, puts Fisher under contract for six years at $63.33 million.

Supply & Demand maybe? If all the left tackles in the league of his caliber were available to be signed he probably doesn’t get that much.

He’s good I suppose, but short of poaching someone else via trade it’s not like extremely high caliber LTs become available frequently. In this case it was probably better to slightly overpay a good LT as opposed to taking the risk that you let him walk eventually and end up with a subpar replacement.

    Thank you from Raider Nation.

He is turning into a pretty good left tackle. Hard to find guys like that. Much easier to find a safety Berry can get his 12+ million somewhere else.

This is typical of Andy Reid’s unwillingness to cut bait with high round draft picks who played poorly for him. It will eventually lead to seasons like his last in Philadelphia.

    Joe Fisher? Lol.

Amazing to me that some people think the Chiefs should pay Eric Berry whatever he wants, but a deal that averages out to about $10.5M over 6 years for an ascending left tackle is somehow a terrible move.

To those people mocking Fisher, please stop. You have no idea what you’re talking about. He played extremely well the second half of last year and has done nothing but improve since the day he was drafted. He was a project from the start and Dorsey knew that. Left tackles don’t just grow on trees in case you didn’t notice.

“Much easier to find a safety Berry can get his 12+ million somewhere else.”

Eagles thought the same with an aging Dawkins. Don’t make the same mistake.

Fisher is clearly not ascending, like somebody else said, he average at best.

Just another bad move by the Chiefs.

Don’t understand why they aren’t trying work something out with Berry but hey maybe they know something we dont

This guy has been benched multiple times during his young career, he played terribly and labeled bust until the half of the last season, then he played decent, and all of the sudden for some people he’s the best LT in the league. This is ridicolous, good for him they gave that absurd contract, bad for the Chiefs.

Yep, just another bad move by the GM who took a laughing stock organization to 32 wins in 3 years, 9 and 11 game winning streaks, a dominating playoff win and continues to build one of the deepest rosters in football.

Have you ever thought about not talking? You should really try it.

Actually, he has never been benched. He has been moved from LT to RT to appease a giant whine bag in Donald Stephenson, has been injured at times, but otherwise has progressed with almost every snap he’s played and did nothing short of kick JJ Watt’s ass in the playoffs last year.

Keep jabbering about stuff you have no clue about though, it’s really the American way. People will believe you, too. They seem to love idiots.

They’ve invested a LOT of money in this guy for what has amounted to a good 1/2 year of solid play.

  17. kcwolf86 says: Jul 31, 2016 3:46 AM

10 mil a yr will seem like a discount in a couple seasons. Contracts are only going up. If he continues the improvement he showed last yr, he’ll be one of the most underpaid players in the league. If not, you slightly overpaid over the course of 6 years for an average lt. Giving berry the contract he wants, the highest paid safety in the league, to a safety who really doesn’t cover that well, is the mistake that would haunt the chiefs, not the other way around

NFL Commissioner Goodell better get teams in other countries before it collapses like a house of cards.

  19. nelly837 says: Jul 31, 2016 6:57 PM

You know what the worst contract in the NFL is? It’s the $30,000,000 plus salary that the NFL pays Roger Goodell every year.
