Trump, NFL dispute whether league asked debates to be moved

Politics and football have combined to create a bit of a hot potato.

Two of the three upcoming presidential debates conflict with prime-time NFL games. One of the candidates for the highest office in the land claims that the league has requested a rescheduling of the debates. The NFL has denied it.

In an interview with This Week on ABC, Trump expressed concern about the schedule — and he said the NFL has expressed concern, too.

“Well, I’ll tell you what I don’t like,” Trump said. “It’s against two NFL games. I got a letter from the NFL saying, ‘This is ridiculous. Why are the debates against’ — ’cause the NFL doesn’t wanna go against the debates. ‘Cause the debates are gonna be pretty massive, from what I understand, OK?”

The NFL says no such letter was sent.

“While we’d obviously wish the Debate Commission could find another night, we did not send a letter to Mr Trump,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said on Twitter.

The September 26 Monday night game between the Falcons and Saints conflicts with one of the debates. A Sunday night game on October 9 involving the Packers and Giants conflicts with the other debate.

“I don’t know how the dates were picked,” Trump said. “I don’t know why those particular dates.”

Trump likely assumes that his supporters will be more inclined to opt for football than his opponent’s supporters, based on the broad, general belief that football draws more fans of a conservative mindset than liberal/progressive types. And the NFL likely would prefer not to be competing against the debates.

Unlike the debate that emerged two weeks ago regarding HBO’s Ballers, when executive producer Mark Wahlberg claimed Commissioner Roger Goodell called and tried to kill the show, the NFL allegedly reduced its concerns about the debates to writing and sent them to Trump.

So this one should be easy to prove. Trump simply needs to produce the piece of paper. That should be easy to do, right?

Of course, if Trump does indeed produce the piece of paper, there’s always a chance that someone will express skepticism about its authenticity. Perhaps by saying something like, “He came up with this thing, all of a sudden, miraculously.”

  1. I’m pretty sure competent Americans hate Trump and the media by and large is pretty spilt in terms of favoring one political spectrum or the other.

    But reality tends to have a liberal bias I’ll give you that.

  2. Whoever picked the image that goes with this story… that person gets the Image of the Week Award, which is three hours online with no politics being mentioned anywhere.

  3. The good news is that Putin didn’t pick the dates. Or did he? I’ve never seen a more boring reality show than this one.

  4. Yes it’s the “liberal media” and people with those darn pesky facts and evidence. It has nothing to do with the fact that guy lies like a cheap rug and incites hatred and bigotry on a daily basis.

  5. You mean Trump may have lied about receiving a letter????? I’m shocked that someone like him would lie. Absolutely shocked.

  6. So this one should be easy to prove. Trump simply needs to produce the piece of paper. That should be easy to do, right?
    =======================================

    If we were talking about Hillary saying this you would not have said that. The entire tone of the article would be different, with innuendos you always fill your articles with suggesting the NFL is lying.

  7. Being a spokesman for 345 Park Ave may well be one of the few occupations whose practitioners are automatically and inherently less trustworthy than a politician.

  8. Matter of fact, the league office, run by liberals, probably worked with the crooked DNC to have the debates during games since Hillary doesn’t want a lot of people watching. As we saw during her few debates with Bernie.

  9. Trump is a 70 year old child. I hope we’re not cursed with 4 years of listening to every cooky crazy thing that out his mouth. God I can’t wait till this election is over.

  10. I’m a socialist and football is my favorite sport. It makes me happy in a way nothing else does. Played in HS and College. Love it nearly as much as taxing the crap out of the rich and doing my best to take everyone’s guns.

  11. When exactly has Trump not lied ?….This is the type of guy people want for President ? If he’s elected President, a civilized America will soon disappear.

  12. Crooked Hillary is trying to put the debates at times when the least amount of people are watching, just like she did with Sanders. She always does this. Her last press conference was in December of last year, on a Friday night (no viewers on weekend) and only consisted of seven questions.

  13. Kgun80…because Hillary doeant lie like a cheap rug either.

    BaseD on the NFL track record I have to believe Trump here.

  14. Look, Trump is a blowhard but that scheduling fiasco is on purpose. Dems tried to hide their debates during the primary because that helped Hillary. It is very likely the same thing here. As for Trump, either he needs to stop making stuff up or he needs to actually listen to the staffers. No doubt somebody on his staff said the NFL won’t like it and somehow that turned into a supposed letter sent.

    This election is a joke. Trump is thin skinned and exaggerates the smallest things to help make his point seem stronger while Hillary is extraordinarily corrupt and blatantly lies about important things. Neither will be good. It boils down to who will be less bad. It is almost comical that the only major democrat that Trump could beat is Hillary and the only Republican Clinton could beat is the Donald. The future of this country will be determined by whichever side can get the most idiots to the polls. Both sides could use a do-over. Either one is a single termer. Maybe we will collectively wise up by 2020.

  15. Here we go. Trump is caught in another lie even though his followers don’t even care about his lack of veracity.

    //////////////////////////////////////////

    The law requiring official enmaiks to be logged within 30 days was passed AFTER Clinton left office. Her use of a personal server may have been bad judgment and may have broken Federal Record rules, but was not against the law.

    Trump, on the other hand, quickly maintained “sarcasm” when he suggested Russia hack and turn over 300 personal Clinton emails. His advisors pulled him aside and informed him such incendiary talk is treason.

    He’s clueless and appeals to clueless people.

  18. The real question is who was dumb enough to schedule a debate against an NFL game?

    Isn’t the first rule of American TV not to go against a prime time football game?

  19. funny how everyone just assumes Trump is the liar here. I mean…Goodell….Trump….I dont believe a word either one says and both have proven they’ll stoop real low,,,

  20. Ok, my choices are;
    1. Watch an entertaining football game.
    2. Watch people argue about how they actually think they can solve problems in the world.

    Hmm, not a difficult decision.

  21. Yeah we could do much better than trump, but in Hillary we could not do worse unless it’s Obama.you people actually think Clinton is honest? I guess you do .you think liberal policies actually work but you can’t point to any evidence.

  22. The fact that the dates were picked by a bipartisan committee over a year ago mens nothing apparently. Must be some vast conspiracy in which the democrats on that committee saw into the future and were trying to undermine Trump.

    Side note: the less people who hear Trump speak, the better off he will be.

  25. I can’t believe it – I usually hold my nose and vote for who I think is the least worst candidate, but for the first time EVER in my life I’m not voting.

  26. I’ve never met a football fan who’d say, “Nah, I’d rather watch the debates.” Football will bury Clinton/Trump, which we can read about in the morning. Football is best enjoyed live.

  27. I look at the political debate going on in the US and I see that most of you just don’t get it.

    Both parties are utterly and totally corrupt. Both parties and concerned only with directing as much public money to their corporate owners and into their own pockets as they possibly can.

    Both parties have spent the last 50 years pushing through legislation that legalized influence peddling that the Constitution was written specifically in ways to prevent.

    That document says We The People, not We The People and the Corporations. We the people, by the people, for the people, that’s how its supposed to be. Dems, GOP they are both the same. Corrupt through and through. They’re both out to screw the people.

  28. In a tweet on Friday night, Trump incorrectly said that Hillary Clinton and the Democrats are “trying to rig the debates.”
    In fact, the fall debate schedule was determined almost a year ago by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, a private group made up of both Republicans and Democrats.
    His primary complaint is that two of the debates are scheduled on the same nights as NFL games.

    ~~~~~~~~
    Be careful calling others clueless when you post things like that. You either hate Trump or like Hillary as your post suggests. Too bad your facts are either wrong or cherry-picked. Asking a foreign country to return/release emails they already hacked/stole is not treason. It is arguable as to treason if he asked them to hack her again, which he did not do. Failure to properly safeguard/maintain classified materials has been against the law for a very long time. Lying to Congress is illegal as is lying to the FBI. Stop pretending she did no wrong. I have seen people get in major trouble for simply failing to mark that a specific classified document was where it was supposed to be. (It actually was in the safe where it supposed to be but the person did not mark an x on the form and got hammered). Hillary did much worse and she did it intentionally to hide her corruption. The FBI knows this but it is hard to prove intent especially when the evidence was comprehensively destroyed. They just called it bad judgment to avoid a national crisis and global embarrassment although I believe they could have easily won the case if they bothered to try it. Bernie waited to drop out until AFTER they said they would not pursue charges because he knew he would be the default nominee if they did.
  33. I love that Trump and his dim bulb followers blame this on Hillary and the DNC. A bi-partisan group came up with the debate schedule almost a year ago, months before the previous NFL schedule was even finished. And now, Trump is caught lying about a letter the NFL never sent. Priceless. Shame it won’t dissuade his followers.
  34. as a expert on whose telling the truth, i gotta side with trump here. goodell is clearly doing this as a way of getting at trumps good friend tom brady. aditionally, the league doesnt want trump as president cause he will appoint a supreme court justice who will overturn bradys supsension.
    Like it or not, we ought to get used to saying President Trump.
  43. Did the NFL write the letter? Common sense says no, they’d love to be up against a lousy political debate. But then you remember Goodell runs the NFL and it becomes believable.
  44. Clinton is an absolute joke and flip flops faster than anyone I have ever seen. I like how she went from free trade is the “gold standard” to know saying she opposed it. The TPP is why China is making a killing while the rest of us suffer. Her foreign policy is a joke. The middle east was starting to Settle down when she took over and now look at it. In 2009 nobody had even heard of ISIS and know they are all over. Syria was still a country and things were calm in Egypt. Iran now has nuclear capabilities and aren’t going to pay attention to the rules that have been applied to them. We have turned our backs on our most powerful ally over there in Israel as well. We have left them completely vulnerable to an Iran nuclear attack. Iran has made it very well known that it would like to see Israel completely wiped off the face of the earth and she has played a part in giving them the means to do it. Is Trump the answer no he is not but neither is Clinton.
  45. Trump always claims everything he does is the biggest and best. He used to claim that the Apprentice was the highest rated show on TV.
    Just like with anything else, if the debate goes up against the NFL, the debate is going to get lower ratings.
  46. Donald should be glad about the scheduling conflict. Fewer likely Trump supporters will witness Hillary mop the floor with him.
  47. Hey, starting to like this guy. He cares about our NFL viewing habits. The other candidate would schedule something during the Super Bowl.
    Uninformed? Do you actually think being informed matters?
  50. The real answer is to use our right to disband the government and start over. If you want real change there has to be a limit on how long the senate and the house can serve. You have 80 year olds who have been in office for 30+ years. Until that changes nothing will truly change.
  51. Donald Trump has never been elected or appointed to any public office at the local, state or federal level.
    He’s never been in the military.
    He has no record of public service to review.
    He’s running for President based entirely on his reputation as a “successful” businessman.
    Yet he refuses to show us the one piece of evidence that we need to evaluate his business success – his tax returns.
    So with no record of public service, no tax returns, virtually nothing to show his fitness for office, Trump wants our vote for President.
    Perhaps he’s hoping to win the election based entirely on his charming personality.
  52. I’m not American, but I feel bad for most of them. This is a lose-lose situation. Hillary is a joke and Trump is an idiot. What a clown show this election season has been.
    Agreed Clinton is a liar like all politicians. But please don’t pretend that Trump has only made remarks regarding entering the country illegally. He said Mexicans were liars and rapists and thieves he has made. He literally has made hundreds of disparaging remarks over the last year about religious groups and different races. Please remove the blinders as much a s Hillary is an oligarch and regular politician Trump is an absolute fraud. Lies about his finanaces( wont release his taxes) and business acumen. He literally asked today about sacrifices he made in comparison to a father who lost a son in the Iraq war that he made sacrifices to working hard and providing jobs.
    He is one of the business owners off shoring jobs!! And this myth that we in turn Obama are apologizing and making America worse. You really think Trump will improve our standing. I’m sure your one of those delusional people that talks down Obama. Well I don’t care about his politics I care about my pocket book and he has been mighty wonderful for that. Please look at the economy in 8 years ago and look at it now. Rant over.
  54. The TPP is why China has been making a killing? It hasn’t even been ratified yet. Not to mention, China’s economy has been down for the last few years, despite their currency manipulation.
    The Middle East was starting to settle down? Like, when? The Arab Spring movement was Clinton’s fault? The civil war in Syria? The fact that the lame, Shia dominated Iraqi gov’t installed by the Bush administration, didn’t want American troops left there and Obama got elected, in part, because he promised to get us out of that quagmire? Iran’s nuclear capabilities were stalled, not accelerated by the treaty. IMO, we’ve done more than enough for Israel. The way they’ve treated the Palestinians doesn’t cover them with glory.
    There’s a reason the more educated a person is, the more likely they are to be liberal.
  55. The problem is that Hillary Clinton does not make the debate schedule. This is a function of the Commission on Presidential Debates, a nonpartisan group that, of course, includes members of both parties. The CPD ‘factsplained’ to the Trump campaign that it had “announced the number, dates and sites for the 2016 general election debates in September 2015,”
    Therefore, Trump just lied again.
    Clinton is an absolute joke and flip flops faster than anyone I have ever seen. I like how she went from free trade is the “gold standard” to know saying she opposed it.
    —No, she said the TPP would be the Gold Standard, not Free Trade in general. Now she opposes it because it doesn’t have enough protections for American workers.
    The TPP is why China is making a killing while the rest of us suffer.
    — The TPP does not include China. Are you Trump’s surrogate? Just making this stuff up as you go and don’t care how much of it is an absolute lie?
    Her foreign policy is a joke. The middle east was starting to Settle down when she took over and now look at it.
    —It was never settling down. We were withdrawing troops as per the agreement signed by President Bush with Iraq. Anybody who says the Middle East was ‘settling down’ hasn’t been paying attention the past 40 years.
    In 2009 nobody had even heard of ISIS and know they are all over.
    —It was started in 2004 in the middle of the Bush administration.
    Syria was still a country and things were calm in Egypt.
    —Syria was under the tyrannical rule of Assad, if you want to call that a country. Egypt was calmly under the boot of Mubarak.
    Iran now has nuclear capabilities and aren’t going to pay attention to the rules that have been applied to them.
    —Iran has sent more nuclear material out of their country now. Netanyahu’s last defense minister, Moshe Ya’alon, said recently that Iran’s nuclear program “has been frozen in light of the deal signed by the world powers and does not constitute an immediate, existential threat for Israel.”
    We have turned our backs on our most powerful ally over there in Israel as well.
    —Completely false.
    We have left them completely vulnerable to an Iran nuclear attack.
    —-Completely false. See the quote above. They are safer now because of Iran’s reduced nuclear ability.
    Iran has made it very well known that it would like to see Israel completely wiped off the face of the earth and she has played a part in giving them the means to do it.
    —Still completely false. See above.
    Is Trump the answer no
    —Glad we agree on something. Though based on the absolute falsehoods you’ve repeated above, I wonder what you base any of your conclusions on.
    ~~~~~~~
    Not anymore. Debates used to be about vision and policy differences. Now they are about name-calling, feelings, shallow soundbites and free stuff. Dems have tugged at heart strings and offered freebies for a long time while republicans tried to sound policy competent even though few bothered to actually listen or research. Trump is running on an emotional platform as well and that scares the politicos on the left. Neither candidate has a demonstrable plan for anything. The more informed you are this time around the more you realize neither would be an acceptable POTUS. I would expect the informed voters will stay home or try and figure out which candidate would do less damage. The fact that even then it is still a toss up is a damn shame and an embarrassment.

  64. Pretty sure the football schedule was set BEFORE the debates so what’s the problem . Most people already know who they are going to vote for and are sick to death of this shameful race.

    I care. I prefer my president not be an enabler. She did her best to smear Bill’s victims. So much for supporting women.
    However, you are free to vote for whomever you want.

    What I’ve found with Trump fans is that they are really good at talking smack, but put the question to them, “if Vegas was offering even odds on Trump/Hillary, how much would you put on Trump?

    Me? I’d max out my credit to bet on Hillary. I’d bet any amount of money on it.

    You? The alpha male. LOL (scaredy cat)

  67. Trump is really a pathological liar. He can’t help himself. It’s amazing that there are actually poor and middle class people out here who believe he cares about them. Unbelievable. What will it take to wake them up?

  68. I know it seems like only one of these entities can be doing this here, but they’re definitely somehow both lying.

  69. When Trump becomes president … the NFL with have to pay the military for the fly overs and save taxpayers millions.
    Yup Trump is dangerous.

  70. Well, Donald, when would you like them to be held….Wednesday nights? Because in a lot of places in the South, that’s a busy night. Friday nights? Well, you can forget Texas — we’re at high school games. Saturdays? Same thing — football. Tuesdays? Bingo night. Want more Trump w(h)ine with that cheese?

  71. The debates should be moved, period. I have an overabundance of popcorn and I actually enjoy a poo-flinging train wreck circus, like anything to do with the Cleveland Browns.

  72. It’s sad that there are people so desperate and hopeless that would suspend critical thinking and pretend Trump isn’t the ridiculous con man he so plainly is.

    Like most well educated and successful people I have trouble putting myself in the shoes of the sort of technologically and economically ignorant people whose value to society has dropped immensely as automation made manufacturing vastly less labor intensive and unskilled labor a low value commodity.

    However it won’t be long before the advances that give us things like automated translation and self driving cars take away ever broader areas of employment and then many of us who now look at trump voters with smug disdain may find ourselves yearning to believe in scapegoats and simplistic economic fantasies as well.

    We need to find better answers for the type of people Trump an his ilk prey upon or those victims will destroy both the economy and democracy itself in their desperation and vulnerability to snake oil.

  73. Trump is a true American patriot who will do right by all Americans. Hillary is a proven sellout to the banks and she will finish this country off. Pretty clear choice.

  74. Can we just get the 30 for 30 about how the Clintons and Trump made a $1 bet about how he could become president by just appealing to one demo. Trump is actually stressing,he keeps saying and doing the most ridiculous things so he doesn’t have to become President, but people are rallying more and more in his support. The Clintons should just pay up the bet so the Donald can go about his life in reality TV land.

  75. Ask tony Schwartz who wrote art of the deal for trump what he thinks of him. Called him a pathological liar that looks at the middle class as losers and he said this for all the world to see on cable TV. He knows trump very well and regrets writing the book for him but he had to as money was tight for him at the time.

  76. Before you hate on Trump for anything, watch or read the fact sheet for “CLINTONS CASH”. You may not believe it, but Trump is trying to stop the corruption in government.

  77. Kind of funny…two corrupt organizations led by serial liars…Trump and Goodell. Both lying about the same thing at the same time.

  78. The debate schedule was set up before the NFL schedule was released. Neither Hillary nor Trump had any say in when the debates were scheduled.

    The debates were to be held on a date where they could get in prime time TV viewing. Most people are home on Sunday nights as they are preparing to go back to work on Monday.

    The commission that sets the debates only has about 100 days between the end of the conventions and election day. It’s not like they can wait until football season is over.

    Still, if the NFL sent Trump a letter, he should produce it. Otherwise, I see this as a way for him to try to ditch the debate. Afterall, a man with his limited knowledge of how government works will get trashed by the ultimate public servant. Trump will be humiliated and he doesn’t want that.

  79. Just like the poor uneducated whites in the South who supported slavery because it gave them status and they blindly believed the plantation owners that their economy was dependent on slavery. The poor uneducated whites of today blindly believe a billionaire who talks and talks but says nothing. Thinking he actually cares about them.

  80. Trump is a bombastic fool but Hillary is truly a dispicible human being. She deserves no less that to be drawn and tarred and feathered then thrown in jail.

    He always has been and always will be a thin-skinned, narcissistic, pathological liar. VOTE!

    Hillary is a she, dude.

    Vote Libertarian!! Nothing will EVER change until we show the 2 elite parties that we’re willing to vote for someone besides who they rig the system to put up there.

    —————————

    That thing has already been proven to be bogus by several sources.

    Also, Trump already retracted the “NFL sent him a letter” comment.

    “Mr. Trump was made aware of the conflicting dates by a source close to the league,” Trump’s campaign said in a statement to This Week.

    We now have the inarguable ambiguity of many of Trumps statements which usually start with “Several people have told/asked me” but tells you who these people are.

    How can the NFL call him out on that statement when it contains ZERO facts that can be checked?

  83. I’m one of those liberal/progressive types and also a bit of a political junky. But I’ll be watching that Saints game!

    One thing is apparent. The majority of PFT readers are not voting for Trump. Every anti-Trump comment has more up votes than down.

    And it’s not even close!!

    Lets’ see if THIS comment makes it on!

  85. If Gary Johnson makes the debates Trump and Hillary are both going to be begging for them to be held on football days and to be broadcast at 2:30 AM so that so as few as possible get to see their name calling and temper tantrums and coughing fits.

  86. It boils down to who will be less bad. It is almost comical that the only major democrat that Trump could beat is Hillary and the only Republican Clinton could beat is the Donald.
    _____________

    So what you’re saying is this election is like a Titans/Jaguars match up?

  87. What is sad is all of the people on here that can not think for themselves. They are quick to agree that Goodell and the NFL are liars when an article comes out, but then claim the NFL would not lie. They all love Donald Trump and his celebrity until he runs as a conservative, not he is racist scum. Hilary and the DNC get their racist and slimy emails stolen and the media ignores their blatant disregard for anyone as long as they remain in power. Turn off your Fox News and MSNBC, read the facts and make an informed decision.

    I will never trust a politician, they’re all slimy. Hence why I’ll go with Trump and not a woman who has been a career politician. Trump is a spotlight driven egomaniac, but his success hinges on a thriving American economy where citizens have money to spend. Hilary is, well, a liberal democrat whose success hinges on an unstable America/world where citizens are held back from reaching their full potential so they can depend on her for survival. Good luck.

  88. So….how much better would life be if a liar’s pants really DID catch fire……..???

    Hmmmmm…………….

    (I’m betting Trump would spontaneously combust…..)

  89. There isn’t a snowballs chance in hell I’m voting for either one of these clowns. So quite honestly a test pattern would get better ratings in my house than the debate no matter what date they happen.

  90. Obviously Trump is just mad that the NFL pre-empted the airing of his movie version of The Art of the Deal back in the 70s

    Just a terrible game too – Browns and Colts just went back and forth scoring nothing but safeties

    Horrible

    He has every right to hold a grudge

    We all do for that game
