Ravens waive Trent Richardson

The Baltimore Ravens cut running back Trent Richardson from their 90-man preseason roster in hopes to clear space for a wide receiver position.

If Trent Richardson still plans on eventually landing in Canton, his route there will no longer go through Baltimore.

The Ravens waived the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 draft Tuesday. Richardson hasn’t been able to stay healthy and never stayed on the field long enough to sustain his latest comeback attempt.

Richardson signed with the Ravens in the offseason but missed some time due to a hamstring issue, then needed a knee scope. The early returns were good -- Richardson reportedly lost 20 pounds -- but he couldn’t avoid injuries long enough to make a real bid at winning a roster spot.

After scoring 11 touchdowns as a rookie with the Browns, Richardson was traded to the Colts early in the 2013 season. He averaged 3.0 yards per carry in 2013 and 3.3 in 2014 and was cut by the Raiders last summer.
