Jerry Jones says he might stick with existing backup QBs after scrimmage

The Cowboys have said they weren’t going to rush their pursuit of a veteran backup quarterback, probably because they thought teams were trying to squeeze them in the immediate wake of Kellen Moore’s injury.

But after watching Dak Prescott and Jameill Showers turn in good performances in the team’s Blue/White scrimmage last night, the Cowboys might delay the search even further.

“I’m more encouraged after this about holding our pat hand on a veteran than before this,” Jones told Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “As we go along and if we continue to see this kind of improvement and this kind of instinctive play, I can really get comfortable back there.

“Both of those guys played well. It was what you wanted to see. They looked comfortable and they reacted well when you got a little pressure. It was a good outing. It was good for everyone to see. To me, that was one of the pluses.”

Starter Tony Romo was out there, of course, and their season again hinges on his ability to stay healthy. But Prescott and Showers both played well during the scrimmage, giving Jones and coach Jason Garrett some hope.

“I thought they handled the situations well,” Garrett said. “They were in different situations, some red zone and two minutes stuff that I thought, again, they handled it really well. Not perfect, but they played with a good demeanor. There was a poise and a calm to their presence that I really thought was pretty good, and they will certainly grow from it.”

Of course, all this become a moot point if the price for a Josh McCown comes down, or some other veteran becomes available. But progress is good, and the Cowboys are doing the best they can to not make a panic buy.
