Aqib Talib could face a suspension, regardless of legal case

Getty Images

Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib refused to talk on Monday about the circumstances under which he was shot this offseason, saying the matter is “still under review.” That applies to both the criminal investigation of the matter, and a potential NFL investigation.

Talib reportedly told people that he shot himself, and the circumstances in that shooting could result in Talib facing criminal weapons charges. A report in June indicated that Talib could face a charge as serious as a Class 3 felony for carrying a weapon in public without a license into a place that sells alcohol.

NFL discipline is separate, and not necessarily related to a police investigation. The league can suspend a player for violating the league’s personal conduct policy even if he’s never arrested, charged, tried or convicted. If the NFL concludes that Talib was carrying a gun recklessly, it could suspend him regardless of whether police think there’s enough evidence to arrest him.

There seems to be an expectation that Talib will face some league discipline. The Denver Post reported on Friday that the Broncos could be without Talib for the start of the season because of a potential suspension. And Adam Schefter said on 104.3 The Fan that he talked to a source who said Talib could be suspended eight games, although Schefter hastened to add it could be as little as one game.

NFL discipline is inconsistent and impossible to predict, but the Broncos need to be ready to start the season without Talib.

Surely shooting oneself isn’t as important to the NFL as PSI. A slap on the wrist will suffice. And perhaps a positively toned admonition to Sir John Elway. For duty and integrity!

Since he shot himself ; maybe he should suspend himself.

Must be giving “the corrupt one” a popsicle headache. How do I discipline the player if he now plays on one of my favorite teams????????????????????????????????

I know, I’ll suspend Malcolm Butler for illegally jumping that pass. Yea, that’s it. 4 games for you Butler and don’t you even think about talking to the GOAT while your suspended!

The possibility of a suspension by the NFL must be very deflating for Talib.

it really depends on who the investigators are. if it’s the people that investigated Luck’s broken ribs, or Manning’s HGH deliveries…..then Talib will be fine.

Well, as the Sheldon Richardson and Ray Rice incidents have shown Roger Goodell is supremely qualified to dispense justice related to serious issues such as gun possession and usage, child endangerment, spousal abuse, etc.

Of course we realize those issues pale in comparison to a slight possibility a New England Patriot took part in altering the balls to his liking, a possibility made less likely by the presence of science. Unlike a Green Bay player who flat out admitted he tries to sneak balls altered beyond the legal limits past officials, the Patriot had the gall to profess his innocence and thus that Franchise earned every punishment beyond the alleged maximum of a $25,000 fine.

All hail his Grace, Roger of House Goodell, (hopefully) Last of his Name, King of the Jets and Park Avenue, Lord of the Seven Failures, and Protector of the Shield.

Not to worry, Broncos fans. Gang work, roids, cap cheating, Chinese roids from Guyer used right in front of everyone’s faces…

I am pretty sure Horseteeth has it in good with Sheriff Goebbels.

    Expect nothing.

Gotta keep those AFC teams at full strength to make sure they can be as close to full throttle come January vs the Pats.

Fix games, pay off refs, literally change or adjust a rule midseason, etc…do whatever is necessary.

    6 games reduced to 3 I say.

Get over it. The Pats are the only team in the league to repeatedly get caught cheating. Spy gate, deflate-gate, not to mention the fact that opposing teams consistently have issues with their headsets going out at Foxboro. They got caught again, lied, and are paying the piper. Google “deflate gate text”, and read the commentary from “The Deflator” himself. Funny, nowhere in the dialogue did he mention being on a diet.

Wouldn’t it be funny if a guy who shot himself with an illegal carry would be suspended FOR FEWER GAMES than a guy who was maybe possibly but not really for sure possibly aware that some other guy let 0.5 psi of air out of a football. Hilarious!!!!

there were numerous occasions when headsets went out last season….of course the only instance that mattered to the media and many fans was the instance at Gillette.

and THAT is why Pats fans defend their team on these boards.

When ALL teams get equal media coverage on those types of issues and those teams get equal treatment by the league…..Pats fans will shut up.

    ——————-
This is the part that many articles are largely skipping over in the rush to tell the funny-idiot self-shot story, but some early reports said he’d been to a club, two others there (some reports said he knew them) were reportedly wounded to an as-yet “unidentified” assailant, and that Aqib was found with drugs on him. Could all this be connected and explain that his extremely odd & embarrassing story is really just a very feeble alibi?

  26. devindenv says: Aug 9, 2016 10:06 AM

Can we all be REAL here for a second?
1)Talib is a turd, who likely shot himself. And should be suspended for 8 games.
2)Brady had a hand (pun intended) in having those ball deflated and KNOWINGLY destroyed the phone that had text messages proving it.
3)Goddell is a sorry excuse for a disciplinarian and should turn this duty over to someone else – or better yet, a group.
4)Virtually ALL teams cheat in some respect
5)The Patriots have been caught, and been caught perpetrating some of the more brazen cheating in recent history

  27. plum54 says: Aug 9, 2016 10:09 AM

They also convienently forgot Denver cheating the salary cap, the coach that taped practices and The player that caused the protocol for drug testing to be revamped due to his cheating( Miller).

Let me get this straight the Broncos should lose a draft pick because of the actions of a player in his personal life during the off season! Okay we will accept that punishment when the Pats are stripped of multiple draft picks for employing Aaron Hernandez. How many draft picks should be taken for 2 or more murders?! 5, 10? Ridiculous? one thing i’d like to say is to any Raider fan still butthurt from the tuck rule game, calling that a cheating event is absolutely ridiculous. you want to talk about cheating in a game that led to a SB victory, watch the replay of Casper maneuvering the football into the endzone, blatant cheating.

and then at the call by Ben Dreiff against Ray Hamilton, just stop you are foolish.

  53. greenlargo says: Aug 9, 2016 3:39 PM

The most meaningful line in that story is….

“NFL discipline is inconsistent and impossible to predict”

Yeah it is. So all we can do is wait and see. Note that this line also validates every beef made by Pat’s fans above, so now with that settled let’s give it a rest.

I do not think the NFL should rule at all on Talib for gun charges. It’s a law enforcement issue let law enforcement deal with it. If he does get nailed with criminal charges he gets punished by the courts (IMHO he should be getting some jail time) but the NFL should only take action as defined for cases where a player can’t p,as because of criminal convictions. By keeping themselves out of it they save themselves egg on their faces they keep getting and the large expense and general hassle of having to worry at all. They should be doing this with all this weed business too, just let law enforcement handle it. Your true knuckleheads will get themselves rung up for it and the rest, the guys you would never know if you didn’t hunt them down, why hunt them down?

What tears? Pat’s fans are happy as hell being Pat’s fans.. It’s awesome being a Pat’s fan. 4 championships in 15 years (that’s over 25% of the time they win it all) and deep in the hunt every year. It’s amusing watching fans of other teams talk about Pat’s fans tears if the Pats lose an AFCCS or SB while they themselves are celebrating because their team almost made the playoffs that year. Losing in the AFCCS is to be considered a down year? No other team can come close to setting the bar like that. Pat’s fans are guaranteed an exciting year of championship contention every year in year out. They have nothing they are crying about. I don’t think that was Pat’s fan’s tears you have been swallowing.

  55. free72680 says: Aug 10, 2016 8:07 PM

Hey greenlargo except for the fact you won 3 SB’s in 4 years then went 10 years before you won another and now the window is closing . Tom Brady won’t last another 2 years in the NFL because age WILL catch up to him just like everyone else . My guess is you’re going to start seeing the cracks this year if we haven’t already ( 2-5 finish after 10-0 start in 2015 ? ) . Not to mention BB keeps trading away and letting good talent walk out the door . His ego is such that he thinks that they don’t need top talent to win as long as he’s coach . That philosophy can only hold for so long before the cupboard’s bare and Pats fans turn on him for being so pompous .

  56. free72680 says: Aug 10, 2016 10:16 PM

Stevebeans I would only be upset because he’s a talented player and it would hurt to have him out but if that’s what happens then so be it I’m not gonna whine for months about it . Denver has great depth though so they’ll be able to hold it down until he gets back . Do the crime then do the time . And plum54 I like how you slighly didn’t name the Broncos ” coach ” who was busted for taping another teams practice because he was before , and is currently now employed by the Pats . He goes by the name of Josh McDaniels . Maybe you’ve heard of him ? And where oh where did he learn that tactic ?! The Broncos organization and fans got to see up close and personal the ” Patriot Way ” in action !
