While trying to come back from a torn patellar tendon, Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz suffered a calf injury last summer and wound up missing the entire 2015 season.

That extended his time off the field to nearly two full seasons and made his attempt to resume his playing career this summer one of the big storylines of Giants camp. That storyline took a twist on Tuesday when Cruz left practice after feeling tightness in his groin.
“It’s just a little tightness,” Cruz said. “I didn’t want to push it and potentially make it worse so I just told the training staff and they shut me down.”

Cruz said last year’s injury, which got worse when Cruz tried to get back on the field too soon, played into his decision on Tuesday and the team’s memory of that experience may make Cruz’s prediction that he’ll miss “a couple of days” on the optimistic side. It also makes it unlikely that he’ll play in the team’s first preseason game on Friday, something Cruz said had been in the plans while admitting that the groin issue “clouds” things on that front.
