Chip Kelly: Anthony Davis has been fantastic

Before 49ers tackle Anthony Davis formally announced his return to the team after sitting out last season, offensive line coach Pat Flaherty said that Davis could take nothing for granted in terms of a roster spot with the team.

Flaherty said Davis has “to come back and prove he can play” and the team started him out on the third team in training camp to drive that point home. Davis has moved up to the second team and is competing with Trent Brown at right tackle, leading him to say that he’s “building pretty fast” after starting from the bottom upon his return to the field.

Coach Chip Kelly had a similar take on Davis’ progress.

“He’s all about football,” Kelly said, via CSNBayArea.com. “And he’s all about getting better, and he’s all about improving. He’s been fantastic so far, so we’ll continue to grow with him. But I’ve been impressed with him so far.”

Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins also deemed himself impressed by Davis’ efforts thus far and more of the same during the exhibition season will likely lead to another step up on the depth chart by the start of the regular season.
