Nelson Agholor: Green-Beckham trade not a message to other wideouts

When discussing the decision to trade wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham on Tuesday, Titans General Manager Jon Robinson said that an inquiry from the Eagles about the second-year wideout got the ball rolling on the trade.

The talent that Green-Beckham has flashed makes it easy to understand why there would be interest in his services, although his off-field issues and the fact that he’d dropped down the Titans depth chart despite that talent would likely give some clubs pause about making a trade for him at this point in the calendar.

For the Eagles, the move comes at a time when they’ve had an extended look at receivers other than Jordan Matthews while Matthews recovers from a knee injury. That will cause some to infer that Nelson Agholor, Rueben Randle, Josh Huff and the rest of the group were found to be lacking, but Agholor doesn’t think that’s the case.

“I don’t look at it as a message, I look at it as an opportunity for us to become a better football team,” Agholor said, via Philly.com. “They want the same thing I want, and that’s to win football games and to be a great football team.”

Agholor may not be taking it personally, but there is a message for him and the other Eagles wideouts. The message is that there’s another player bidding for a roster spot and playing time in Philadelphia and that any success that Green-Beckham has will necessarily have an impact on everyone else’s chances of earning either of those things.

That should make for a spirited competition over the rest of the summer and the Eagles hope it will mean better production across the group come the regular season as well.
