Report: Sebastian Vollmer likely headed to injured reserve

Getty Images

It’s not a great morning for injury news concerning the Patriots.

Running back Dion Lewis reportedly needs another surgery on his knee and Jim McBride of the Boston Globe reports that right tackle Sebastian Vollmer is likely headed to injured reserve. Vollmer is currently on the physically unable to perform list with an undisclosed injury.

The move wouldn’t mean Vollmer is out for the entire season as teams can bring one player back from injured reserve each season. A rule change this year means that they do not need to designate that player at the time he goes on I.R. as was the case in past seasons. The team could keep him on the PUP list, leaving him ineligible to play or practice for the first six weeks, so going the I.R. route might indicate they believe he’ll be out for a longer period of time.

Marcus Cannon has been at right tackle with Vollmer on the PUP list this summer. LaAdrian Waddle and Cameron Fleming provide further depth at the position.

McBride also reports that guard Shaq Mason, who did not play against the Bears, broke his hand and that there currently isn’t a timetable for his return to action. Josh Kline started at right guard against Chicago.

With Scar back coaching the Oline this is a lot less of a blow than if he wasn’t.

good thing the club is loaded

even with goodell enabling cheating against the pats with framejobs, proven in federal court, pats just need to get to 2-2 before week 5.

“This is what happens when you bargain shop for often injured players.”

Statements like that are what happens when you’re clueless about what your talking about.

The Pats drafted Vollmer in the 2nd round a few years ago. He was not a “bargain basement” free agent.

Furthermore Belichick has taken many “bargain basement free agents” that he identified strengths in and then put them in positions to use their strongest skill set, at which point they became very successful players.

Keep spouting nonsense though if it makes you feel better.

Dion Lewis out…….Bill is going to sign Karlos Williams get him in shape while serving his 4 games then give him a few weeks to get into football shape and on 10-30-2016 have him rush for 5 TDs against the Bills….LOL

Don’t forget about Tom Brady’s Thumb.
I’m surprised he had it out of his mouth long enough to cut it!

  9. manipuraram says: Aug 21, 2016 1:16 PM

Patriots super bowl bound. Brady gonna tell Goodell to stick that trophy where the sun don’t shine.

  10. jay6666 says: Aug 21, 2016 1:22 PM

Gee…a broken hand for Mason?? Wonderful!! What is happening with Sheard? The fact that nothing has been said is NOT good news….
They also have the possibility of WR Amendola and OL Jackson starting on PUP. Jackson had surgery late in the season and may not be ready….Amendola??
One thing is clear is that they are loaded..so with BB and Scar…all will be set!!
It does stink that Lewis and Vollmer may be out for longer periods of time..
The Pats deal with injuries all the time and come out OK..which is great!! No cheating there haters!! They just know how to manage rosters and injuries.

Cannon and Fleming are stiffs and no coach in the world is gonna get any more out of them. Stork is a concussion waiting to happen and may be done. The O line cost them a championship last season and they did nothing in the offseason to improve it. Bringing in a geriatric coach no matter how legendary can’t replace actual talent. I’m a pats fan since 1961 and I am perplexed to say the least. The running back situation is another story. Jeesh. Am I to old to be posting on these boards?

What is it with guys that have fact or truth in their id that they would not know one if it bit them? Vollmer was originally drafted by NE, he deservedly received one of the higher RT paydays when he was re-signed and is still among the top ten in salary at the position. He’s had 2 seasons where he played less than 14 games and one of those was due to a broken leg. ‘factman indeed’, that there were 13 (so far) people nub enough to upvote that says as much about them as it does the fact challenged author. smh

I think most of us (Patriots fans who pay attention) saw this coming. I’m a pretty firm Belichick believer, and they’ve always produced (contrary to popular and crybaby-ish belief) no matter what.

But I really just have to say; it should be a sin to let your weakest position stay your weakest position for as long as the Patriots have.

According to CBS, the Pats did that despite being the most injured team of 2015. BB’s plug-n-play, if complicated, system and his keenness for the versatile players that can handle it, mean that the Pats cope with injuries better than any team in the league.

This doesn’t look good for Tom trying to stay upright this year. We are weak all over the place. We were $Millions below the cap MINIMUM. and we still couldn’t find some good players.

Denver gets blown out in the super bowl and 2 years later has the best defense playing. Are we ever going to get a decent OL, or is it a race to see if we can ruin the defense before the offense falls apart. GET OFF THE YACHT and DO YOUR JOB ! !

  38. uglydingo says: Aug 21, 2016 4:36 PM

Bill Belichick is at his best when things seem tough. Bill always finds other players who can deliver. There is scope for some concern but remember Bill is 6 streets ahead of all other coaches. He excels in these circumstances and at the end of the season will have the Patriots 12 – 4, maybe 13 – 3.
Relax, Bill and Ernie have it covered.

Dear PFT, I can’t believe that their are so many sour, heartbroken “fans” from other teams that are so obsessed by the Pats that they post something negative on every single story! Don’t these people have their own teams to root for? For that matter, don’t they have lives? It’s PRE-SEASON for Christ sakes! These people need help! Just for the record, the Pats will beat your team again this year, no matter how much you hate them. Take the guy that posted directly above me; please tell me Mr. “The Pats live in my head”, when was the last time the Pats went 9-6? I’ll give you a hint, it was 2002 and it was 9-7. That was 13 years ago. They would win no matter what division they are in. Keep crying, we love it.

  40. swineflooo says: Aug 21, 2016 4:58 PM

Yawn….if this were any other team besides the patriots their season would be over. Unfortunately for the the other 31 teams, the patriots are a machine and will be there at the end.

Hate to say it, but Vollmer carries a 5mil cap hit, is 32 and in the last year of his contract. Not sure about the PUP list rules, but I think they could waive him, maybe after wk 6, and save a little dough. Could be auf wiedersehen for a guy thats been a good, but oft injured player. They may need to go out and get someone at a position they were already thin.
