Colts cornerback Vontae Davis will miss at least the first month of the season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

The report said Davis has ligament damage in his ankle. Earlier in the day, Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Davis would be “week to week” with a medial ankle sprain but didn’t go into much detail on the extent of the injury.

Pagano called his team’s current cornerback situation “scary.”

With Davis out and other players on their cornerback depth chart limping, the Colts agreed to terms with veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Monday night.

Davis, 28, is the Colts’ No. 1 cornerback and has been to the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. He has 21 career interceptions, eight over the last two seasons.
