Russell Wilson moved his wedding out of North Carolina due to bathroom law

At a time when NFL players have been criticized for not speaking out on social issues, one prominent quarterback quietly took action in connection with his offseason nuptials.

Via TheKnot.com, wedding planner Mindy Weiss said that Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson’s wedding to Ciara originally was set for North Carolina, but that they changed the location due to the state’s transgender bathroom law.

Paris apparently was the second choice, but it was Fashion Week. So London became the third, and final, destination.

Some will praise Wilson for not grandstanding on the issue. Others will use the gesture as further evidence that NFL players go out of their way to say absolutely nothing on anything remotely controversial, in order to offend no one.

The NFL chose not to move ownership meetings that happened in Charlotte in May, although multiple owners spoke out against the controversial House Bill 2, which requires citizens to use the restrooms that correspond with the gender of their birth, not the gender with which they identify. The NBA has since scrapped the 2017 All-Star Game in Charlotte, moving it to New Orleans.

  1. Weird. Russell claims to be a Christian, but all of his actions in his personal life suggest otherwise. Divorce, bragging about seeing Shades of Grey, and now this. House Bill 2 should not be controversial at all…the fact that is says something about the mental state of our country.

  2. Okay this is another PC issue and I hate PC issues.

BUT… how does NC plan on enforcing this law?

  3. , which requires citizens to use the restrooms that correspond with the gender of their birth, not the gender with which they identify.

As it should be. There is no reason to open the door for perverts and degenerates to use the same bathroom as my daughter. No thanks.

Whats the old saying…your liberty to be a psychological oddity ends where my daughters privacy begins.

  4. Considering his other choices were Paris and London I’m calling bull on this story. Sure NC is nice but when planning a wedding it doesn’t compare to Paris or London even without HB2.

  5. Man, I used to like Wilson for his Christian beliefs, but he seems like a fake. Good for you, North Carolina, for holding true values in this disgusting PC world.

He’s a professional Christian, in other words he uses his Christianity to boost sales and fame.

  7. Lol at people who are really upset that NC wont let men who identify as a woman in the womans bathroom. This country has lost its mind.

If i identify as a child, can i never work because im a kid?

If i identify as a diplomat, can i act w immunity?

If i identify as a dinosaur, will i be an endangered species and be protected?

Do u people not understamd how absurd u sound?

  8. You should have to use the bathroom of the gender that’s listed on your birth certificate. Anyone can “say” they’re something else. I swear, there is a never ending list of things that the LGBT community can complain about (or politicians), and the media has people thinking it’s bigoted or taboo to disagree. I fear for what type of country my kids will inherit.

There are photos of him and Ciara touring the Biltmore Estate in April. Plus his family is from Virginia and hers is from Georgia, and North Carolina is right in between.

You can call bull, but common sense dictates otherwise

  10. It just so happens that the law is the correct one, and the media twisting its meaning doesn’t change that.

Not that you’d hear it in the media but already a man “identifying as a woman” was caught videoing an actual woman in a Target dressing room. Pretend like it won’t happen again in bathrooms, the media is.

The law won’t last, the state keeps missing out on business as a result and people don’t like losing money.

That being said, how does one brag about seeing a movie? It’s pretty easy to watch a movie..

  12. Good for you, Russell. A man who truly lives by his christian beliefs, as opposed to the rightwing blogshere type of christians. Here is wishing that Seattle has a great year.

How is NC on the list with Paris and London???
    ——————–
Because that’s where the Biltmore Estate is. Which was their first choice.

  14. I don’t know how genuine his story but it’s a good stance to take regardless.

Most of the knuckle dragging mouth breathers who support this law and others like it are losers. They and their kind have been losers for centuries. The lost on slavery, the lost on womens suffrage, the lost on black civil rights, they lost on womens reproductive rights and they lost on gay rights.

I get it, most are from places where their not exposed to transgendered people, but their human, they have rights and they shouldn’t be denied because you find them to be “icky”. Also science backs up the assetion that sexuality and gender identity is more about what’s been the ears than between the legs. Ignorant people like to live in simple black&white worlds but life is more complex than that.

And if you’re concerned about men in dresses molesting kids you should be looking in churches not bathrooms.

  15. These PC attacks on North Carolina because they don’t want to allow special privileges based on ‘Gender Identity’ are insane. Their law does NOT discriminate against those who have gone through re-assignment… because one can’t tell those folks are in the wrong bathroom anyway- they have all the equipment of the other gender. This is about a state that wants to protect women (and girls) from having men who still have their equipment using the same showers at the gym, pool, etc.

Science is very clear: if you have a ‘Y’… you’re a guy. The number one definition of delusion, btw (Webster) is: ‘a belief that is not true’.

  16. HB2’s bathroom provision is not – and never has been – about safety. It has no enforcement provisions, nor does it criminalize violations or noncompliance. Even NC officials acknowledge this.

  17. Good for the Wilson’s to make the change. I live in NC and those diehard yahoos will go down in flames, waving the Confederate flag, no matter the embarrassment and financial loses incurred.

Thus is the legacy and the remnants of famous white supremacist, Jesse Helms, who left his mark on his protegee, Governor McCrory and the GOP legislature.

Still the #2 banking center of the nation, once the leader of the NEW SOUTH, now seems dead set on becoming Mississippi.

  19. The left and their flunky’s in the media are awesome! I remember when it was ‘all about the children’. If we save or protect just one child from harm nothing is draconian. Now their safety and well being is irrelevant.

  20. Note to those who think the federal law is suddenly going to lead to pedophiles, etc. in restrooms – they’ve been there all along. They don’t give a rat’s rear end what this or any law says.

Best solution I’ve seen is the one Target is going for. Single unit restroom that anyone can use. Not sure what it’ll say on the door but I vote for “Whatever”.

  21. How to tell that you’re talking to a mouth-breathing troglodyte when it comes to issues of gender identity – they insist that “science” says the XY or XX chromosome determines gender, and that’s it.

Actually, as proven via a great deal of neuroscience research (for beginners, Google “Simon Levay”), your gender identity and sexual orientation are actually regulated by the interstitial nuclei 1-4 of the anterior hypothalamus, and most impacted by exposure of a fetus to specific hormones in the uterus during weeks 10-14 of gestation (for humans).

The anterior hypothalamus is also responsible for regulation of core body temperature.

To those who insist on maintaining their ignorance, just understand that real “scientists” find your ignorance repulsive and barbaric. You have less understanding of science than you do of Christ’s message of love and tolerance which you ignore while claiming to be a Christian.

As for the outrage against the bigoted law being “PC” – actually, it’s the people who manufactured the “controversy” and then passed a law around it who would be “PC”. Nobody on the other side of the debate has told anyone what to do. In fact, it is the bigots who passed the law who are telling others what is “politically correct” – which is their own narrow, bigoted, and ignorant view of the world, and their own reaction against losing the “culture war”. The fact that such laws only came into existence a few months after the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was protected by the 14th Amendment speaks for itself. It is identical to the Jim Crow laws created in the South after the federal government abolished slavery.

  22. If North Carolina is really concerned about keeping pedophiles out of bathrooms just pass a law prohibiting the clergy from using public restrooms.

    Good for Russell.

  23. If you think people should carry their birth certificates to the bathroom, you might just be the weird one.

On another note- I can’t be the only one who remembers the rumors about Ciara. Of course, Russ was probably still in elementary school at the time. Another recipes for disaster- marrying an older single mom probably isn’t a good idea no matter one’s religion or socioeconomic status.

This isnt about any type of hate or discrimination whatsoever. This is about a fear that a man can go freely into a womens restroom where he could very easily catch a woman or worse yet a young girl in a vunerable position. The trasngenders are likely already using the bathroom they choose anyway and probably have been for decades. Sexual predators dont need any help preying on their potential vicitms. If you dont agree with this, make an argument as oppsoed to name calling and stereotyping others. the comparisons you make to slavery and civil rights is absolutely laughable.
Its not about not wanting to be in a bathroom with someone who thinks theyre of a different sex than what they were born as. Its about NOT announcing that basically “hey, if you want to go into our womens restroom and you are a man, all you have to do is look like you identify as a woman.”

If you dont think sexual predators are real and saturating your community, look at the arrest reocrds for the last week/month in your county and then try to imagine how many didnt get caught. Its scary.

Funny that you used the term “common sense” while discussing this issue.

  26. I don’t think anyone in North Carolina will lose any sleep over Wilson moving his wedding.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  27. How to tell that you’re talking to a mouth-breathing troglodyte when it comes to issues of gender identity – they insist that “science” says the XY or XX chromosome determines gender, and that’s it.

    —————————————————————————-

Whoa. You are very deep inside one worldview. Please stop throwing around the word bigot to shame people that don’t agree with you. You have studied one theory, a theory that is extremely far from conclusive. Have some humility like most people on either side of this and admit the science isn’t there – really in either direction. The chromosomal science is a pretty big hurdle, however, for those who want to prove gender is something other than one’s physical body through science. Also, just to be clear, here is the literal definition of bigot: “a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.” I absolutely respect your differing opinions and believe you are an intelligent, thoughtful person, most likely. However, the most bigotry I see in this comment string so far is from you. Lastly, if you are transgender, I don’t judge you or think less of you. I do, however, ask you to consider not making this thing a battleground for the culture war and work towards a solution that both honors yhe desires of someone like you AND doesn’t make it unbelievably simple for a pedophile or sexual predator to hang out in a girl’s locker room by simply pretending to be transgender. We need some common sense with this stuff.

  28. For those wondering why Russell may have done this, keep in mind Ciara isn’t as strong of a Christian and she was an LGBT advocate previously (see Instagram). I’d guess Russ loves transgender people but also would take a much more common sense approach to bathrooms than Target or the media do, if pressed. I’m sure he also wants to stay out of the culture war. Who can blame him?

  29. This was a PR move by Russell to draw more attention to his wedding. Who cares where you decide to get married dude. You can get married in hell for all I care. We have to many other pressing issues in this country than to worry about Russell’ s wedding location. He acts as if his wedding is going to bring a lot of revenue to the city of Charlotte. Here is a message for you Russell… Pull your head out of you four points of contact!!! Who cares!!!

  30. First of all, the artists who have canceled shows in North Carolina have all, without exception, gone on to perform in multiple countries with much stricter laws against the LGBT community. Celebrities boycotting NC is a pathetic publicity stunt and nothing more.

This situation is no exception. Along with his commencement speech at Wisconsin earlier this year, Russell Wilson is using this boycott as a passive aggressive dig at the home state of the team who spanked him twice last season.

  31. Apparently Wilson wanted to wear his game jersey into the women’s room. Wonder if he’ll be allowed to in London.

  32. Everything was working fine in North Carolina without the need for any law, transgender people would use the bathrooms that made sense to them & nobody cared. But then the city of CHARLOTTE had to come in and try to play the role of virtue-signaling hero and passed a law saying that people can use whatever bathroom they feel like using (even if it’s a guy who looks and dresses like Tom Selleck walking into the ladies’ room -i.e. not wearing a wig or dress or having any otherwise feminine or trans qualities).

The STATE of North Carolina was then forced to counter Charlotte’s idiotics by passing the state law.
