With Peyton Manning gone, the Broncos need leadership from others. They’ll get it from a trio of captains, none of whom play quarterback.
The defending Super Bowl champions announced that receiver Demaryius Thomas, linebacker DeMarcus Ware, and cornerback Kayvon Webster the offensive, defensive, and special-teams captains, respectively.
For Ware, it’s the third time he’ll wear a C. Thomas has done it once before. Webster is a first-time special-teams captain.
The players typically vote on team captains, and the coach typically counts the votes -- and all that that sometimes implies. With the Broncos, it’s hard to imagine starting quarterback Trevor Siemian having enough support to wear the C from the players, especially since he only recently got support from the coaching staff to be the starter. And he may not be the starter for all that long, if the team loses or if Siemian struggles or if Paxton Lynch, officially No. 2 behind Siemian, steps up.
