The Colts made a roster swap Tuesday, adding linebacker Akeem Ayers and cutting cornerback Neiko Thorpe.
Ayers played last season for the Rams and was cut last weekend. A second-round pick of the Titans in 2011, he played in Tennessee until being traded to the Patriots in 2014.
Ayers, who played in all 16 games and started 10 for the Rams last season, could be an immediate contributor for the Colts.
The release of Thorpe would seem to be a good sign for the availability of cornerback Darius Butler for Sunday’s season opener vs. the Lions. The Colts have been hit hard by injuries at cornerback over the last several weeks and will be without top cornerback Vontae Davis until at least October.
Thorpe was just signed by the Colts over the weekend.
The Colts also announced that they’ve added undrafted rookie cornerback Frankie Williams to their practice squad.
