Two men now jailed for a string of armed robberies and attempted murder in New Orleans at one time targeted former Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the New Orleans Advocate reported Tuesday.

The story includes some strange details and says that police informed Ryan of the threats after a federal worker received a voicemail intended for someone else that described Ryan as a target.

“He ain’t like [rapper] Lil Wayne,” the person leaving the voicemail said, according to a court document. “He just a ...football coach...defensive coordinator of the Saints. He don’t have no bodyguards.”

They were right. Big Rob is no Lil Wayne.

A police car was placed in front of Ryan’s house for a time, the story said. One of the men involved was arrested last November on charges that included conspiracy to commit murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Another suspect was arrested last month.

Though a grand jury did not indict the two men on specific charges involving Ryan, they were part of a broader indictment last month in which eight men were accused of conspiring to stage a string of high-profile robberies at bars and restaurants last year in the Uptown section of New Orleans.

Ryan now works under his twin brother, Rex, with the Bills.
