Carson Wentz says game already has slowed down

PHILADELPHIA, PA - AUGUST 11: Carson Wentz #11 of the Philadelphia Eagles throws a pass in the second quarter of a preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lincoln Financial Field on August 11, 2016 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images) Getty Images

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz makes his first career start in his first career regular-season game, despite have very limited on-field preseason experience. Wentz isn’t deterred by that, at all.

“The game definitely slowed down for me,” Wentz told Cleveland reporters on a Wednesday conference call, regarding his one and only slice of game action to date. Regardless of how much he played or how much the game did, or didn’t, slow down, Wentz is projecting the right attitude for the challenge he’s about to face.

“I feel very ready,” Wentz said. “I feel very confident. I felt ready for a while now. Missing the reps kind of is what it is, but I’m very confident I’m ready to go.”

Wentz said that the ribs he injured during his only preseason action are fully healed, and that the injury won’t change the way he plays at the NFL level. He nevertheless acknowledged the importance of playing in a way that minimizes opportunities to get hit and, in turn, to get hurt.

Although the Cleveland-Philly dynamic makes for some interesting subplots, Wentz claims he’s not paying attention to those angles. He called the decision of the Browns to trade the No. 2 overall pick to the Eagles instead of using it to take him as something that’s “in the past,” and that he gets no extra motivation from it. Wentz also said he gets no motivation from Browns chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta’s remarks that the Browns didn’t view Wentz as a top-20 quarterback.

There’s a chance Wentz means it. There’s also a chance he’s opted to internalize those feelings as he prepares to show the Browns why they should have made his name the next one on that jersey that lists all of the names of the quarterbacks who have started for the Browns since 1999.

‘game has already slowed down’…geez, it hasn’t even started yet

  2. sandman34rt says: Sep 7, 2016 4:18 PM

So the guy thats never played a regular season game or even over a quarter in preseason vs starting defensive players has had the game slow down already.

    Yeah ok

  3. fjbuon says: Sep 7, 2016 4:20 PM

Slowed down? He played in one preseason game.

  4. lindacaseauthor says: Sep 7, 2016 4:23 PM

How could the game have slowed down for the kiddo when he’s never even played a regular season game. Total millennial.

  5. mindelm42 says: Sep 7, 2016 4:25 PM

Maybe wait till you’ve ACTUALLY PLAYED A GAME TO say that!

  6. grantgoodman93 says: Sep 7, 2016 4:27 PM

    Got another thing coming homie

  7. alcondragonblog says: Sep 7, 2016 4:38 PM

He was referring to his X-box…the game froze just before he was going to be sacked!

  8. janvanflac says: Sep 7, 2016 4:47 PM

I hope he lights up the Browns. But considering that franchise’s history with QBs, it’s a good thing they didn’t pick him.

  9. tfavrat says: Sep 7, 2016 4:48 PM

Got to love his confidence. He goes from playing Division 1 college ball, then gets a whole NFL preseason quarter under his belt, where he gets hurt and now the game is slowing down? Wow, reality is about to run over and smack him down hard…

  10. forbesscot2004 says: Sep 7, 2016 4:49 PM

He just realized that he was starting against the Browns, half of whose players have never started an NFL game before either

  11. scrp2 says: Sep 7, 2016 4:52 PM

Geez… you think the Browns are a world class organization with a stellar history of evaluating talent.

The last decent QB the Browns had was Otto Graham in 1941.

No quarterback is happy about being selected by the Browns and every quarterback is ecstatic about being passed on by the Browns, Wentz included.

the kid will definitely be motivated by the depodesta remarks, but was wise to say otherwise. probably should have left off the “slowed down” part as well.

but that is only important in the blogosphere; the important part will be determined by whether he is able to play the position on the field.

  13. xevious02 says: Sep 7, 2016 4:53 PM

sigh…hope he does well. Need to back up those words with strong play!

  14. zinger92 says: Sep 7, 2016 4:55 PM

Better than saying “Well gee idk gosh I certainly hope I’ll do ok, maybe?”

He’s got a locker room full of veterans that wouldn’t tolerate any response other than the one he gave. Chill out.

  15. putthatkoolaiddown says: Sep 7, 2016 5:02 PM

What ever happened to “I’m just taking things one day at a time, and God willing, I just hope I can help the ball club.” ?

Someone needs to go find Crash Davis, and get him to teach this kid his cliche’s. He is sounding as dumb as Nuke LaLoosh. He is going to look even dumber when he gets his head taken off this weekend and a reporter reminds him of that quote.

  16. justintuckrule says: Sep 7, 2016 5:03 PM

He’s got delusional Philly fan greed blood running through him, that’s for sure.

There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance, Carson.

  18. streetscoop says: Sep 7, 2016 5:08 PM

  19. elmerbrownelmerbrown says: Sep 7, 2016 5:12 PM

I don’t think Joe Montana ever said the game slowed down for him !

  20. bobbyhoying says: Sep 7, 2016 5:38 PM

This game is meaningless because regardless of the outcome Cleveland will own the first two picks in the 2017 draft. (Assuming PFT rankings hold true.)

  21. theghostofottograham says: Sep 7, 2016 5:53 PM

I didn’t know the game could slow down for a player while watching from the bench or the trainers room…!!! Show us on the field rookie…

    he will be just fine

    Dear Carson:

There are four speeds in the NFL:

    Practice Speed
    Preseason Speed
    Regular Speed
    Playoff Speed

You’ve only experienced first and second gear.

    Buckle up, kid!

I think he’s saying that his Xbox got the red-ring-of-death.
    It completely freezes Madden.

  25. skol4life says: Sep 7, 2016 6:10 PM

He’s already the best player on the team. The receivers can’t adjust to the speed of his throws. #BisonNation

  26. winged warrior says: Sep 7, 2016 6:12 PM

That’s called self confidence one of the reasons why they drafted him. All you experts drop by Monday morning , I’ll put on the coffee for you.

  27. ocgunslinger says: Sep 7, 2016 6:15 PM

This is a touch game to pick IMO. Cleveland has been dissed this week and RGIII has something to prove. The Eagles will need to score some points…..may prove to be tough. Might as well take the upset.

  28. pioniere says: Sep 7, 2016 6:16 PM

    What an idiot.

We’ll see how much the game has ‘slowed down’ for him when he’s laying on his back seeing stars, or when he throws INTs on back-to-back possessions.

He needs to just shut up and play.

  29. crappygovernment says: Sep 7, 2016 6:21 PM

DII Carson Wentz would be in over his head against an SEC or Big 10 defense, let alone an NFL defense!

  30. zoxitic says: Sep 7, 2016 6:44 PM

The only thing that has slowed down is his breathing with those ribs

“Sigh”. It’s not DII it’s FCS, formerly DIAA. He played for the 5 time defending National Champion NDSU Bison. Over an eight year span they have beat Minnesota twice (Big 10), Colorado State, Iowa State, and defending Big 12 champion Kansas State in 2013. The Bison play Iowa(Big 10) in 2 weeks and Oregon in 2020. Do some research instead of making stuff up like you’re in over your head.

Glad the preseason slowed down for you, bet get ready because teams play at another speed starting tomorrow night! Can’t Wait!

When you come out of the gate of highlights with beating the Gophers in football……well let’s just say your argument loses it’s edge.

  34. demskinsbaby says: Sep 7, 2016 7:10 PM

The game would be a lot slower for him if he had Desean Jackson to throw to. Who’s actually been a model citizen since arriving in Washington. Thanks Chipparooney!!!

  35. seven7cg says: Sep 7, 2016 7:17 PM

The game slowed down because you sat on the remote kid.

  36. campcouch says: Sep 7, 2016 7:18 PM

Didn’t his old man say he didn’t want to go to Cleveland? Why would he be motivated if he got his wish?

  37. charliecharger says: Sep 7, 2016 7:48 PM

I don’t know how good the rest of the Eagles’ roster is, but this kid is going to be great. He has everything you want in a franchise QB.
